State Meet Finals - Saturday 6/7/03
- Running
- Girls 400 Relay - Great contest - into the anchor after LB Poly had
screeching second leg by Jasmine Lee it was North and Poly even - North
with a less than optimum hand-off and Shalonda Solomon was off to the
races (10.6 on the anchor) for the win close to 45.0 or just over -
Wilson pulled and pulled on North and appeared to maybe have finished
second on the lean. 45.04 - 46.10 - 46.11 Results: Poly - Wilson 2nd
- North 3rd - El Camino 46.71 4th - West (Tracy) 46.91 - Logan 46.94
every point important!!! 6th place under 47!!!
- Boys 400 Relay - Kevin McCall and Brandon Myles had Carson out at
21.2 at the 200, with a huge lead as they came into the anchor - we
held our breath as they took the baton near the end of the exchange,
but Carson was able to complete the hand-off and appeared to come it
at 41.5. Looked like LB Poly was second, but good job by LA City school,
Carson! Carson 41.53 official. LB Poly 41.94 second - Skyline 42.06
- Granite Bay 42.12 - University City 42.13
- Girls 1600 - 35.3 first 200 with Follmar and Costello and the pack
close! Barrientos moved just at the 400 with a 73.2 time there - pack
all still within 8 meters. Lindsey Allen outside in second up to the
600, a relaxed pace thus far. No one seems to want to lead, with 38.7
for the third 200 at 1:51.9. Barrientos moved to lead coming up to the
1200, with all within 5 meters again. 2:30.8. Allen moved at the start
of the third lap with Costello attempting to cover the move. 3:07.6
at the 1000, and 36.8 for that 200. Six pulling away at the gun, with
Allen leader at 3:44.1. Five pulling away as they head down the backstretch,
Allen, Follmar, Costello, Viehweg, and Crampton - 4:18.7 with 200 to
go (34.6 that 200) 4:35.5 with 100 to go at the 1500 mark, Alicia Follmar
continues the amazing close to her soph season, as she powered by near
the tape to a 4:51.3 win (final 100 m at 15.7 62.8 400 pace) . Follmar
4:51.47 - Allen 4:51.71 - Costello 4:53.74 - Crampton 4:55.46 - Viehweg
4:56.39
- Boys 1600 - 31.0 first 200 with Reid in the lead ahead of the pack.
Torrence and Matusak running 2-3. Chaves 4th at the 400. 63.6 (32.6
second 200) - Reid, Torrence, Matusak, Chaves with people content with
the placements at that point in the race. Rojas went from 9th to first
from 550 to 600 meters and led at 1:36.1. The pink-clad Rojas with Reid
moving up on his shoulder through the 800 - 2:09.3 (33.1 that 200) -
Swier second down the backstretch towards the 1000 - at 2:40.1 Swier
moved ahead with 600m to go - the race was on - Swier huge effort at
that point, Loyola running 3-4 with Matusak and Torrence. Reid back
into the lead by the 1200 with Babiracki 6th - 3:10.1 with Reid, Matusak,
and Swier within 5 meters, the rest a few meters back. Babiracki back
20 meters with 300 to go. Reid pulling away upto 1400, leading by 15m
at 3:39.0 - Reid raced in ahead at 4:08.4 (last 400 58.3 for Reid) -
Easy win Reid 4:08.49 - Rojas 4:10.58 - Torrance 4:11.58 - Swier 4:11.59
- Babiracki 4:12.08.
- Girls 100 Hurdles - looked like Lodree in the green was out of the
blocks early, and after looking so good last night it appeared she was
gone. Will be interested to hear the argument that allowed her to stay
in, as possibly the athlete next to her drew her out. Obviously Lodree
sat the second time, with the North Girls, Brown and Manning out super!
Lodree eventually moved, and ran down Manning, but could not quite catch
Ashlee Brown. 13.58 and 13.64 for the first two! (wind +0.8) - #3 and
#5 prep times nation for the year. 26th All-time for high-schoolers,
but of course Ashlee is #4 on the School All-time list behind Nichole
Denby (13.20), Nicole Hoxie (13.35), and Joanna Hayes (13.38)- gee whiz
Coach Leathers can coach those timber-toppers - Brown 13.58 - Lodree
13.64 - Manning 13.88 - Hill 13.92 Wilson - Hunter 14.12 (North - 3
of top 5)
- Boys 110m High Hurdles - Marquis Profit (Muir) marginally best start
- Kevin Craddock (Logan) moved ahead by hurdle 3 and separated slightly.
Defending Champ Thomas Mack started a move in the middle of the race,
but flailed at hurdle 8 and probably finished out of the money. Wind
+2.7 and 14.09 on the board after - Craddock continues to look super
for a soph! wind reading later came up 2.0 wind legal (?) - Marquis
Profit 2nd 14.28 - Jason Bolden-Anderson 14.32 - Craig Woods 14.33 -
Kai Kelly 14.40
- 400 Meters Girls - Jasmine Lee definitely the leader through 200m
at 25.7 from lane 7, with Myra Hasson in lane 5 and Deonna Lawrence
in lane 6 appearing to be next. Lee worked the third 200, with Hasson
also working that segment and closing slightly. Down the homestretch
it was the LB Poly star Lee, moved up from the sprints this year, emerging
a State Champ at 53.17 over Hasson's 54.01. - Gaines 54.38 in third
and Deonna Lawrence 54.44 in 4th.
- 400 Meter Boys - What it's all about - one figured soph David Gettis
(Dorsey) had used all his energy in racing a huge pr 47.14 in Friday's
heats. In the Finals it was veteran Desean Cunningham (Uni City) on
the outside leading at the 100m at 11.6, with Deun White (lane 2) (Helix)
ahead at 200m 22.4. At the 300 it was John Walters (Newark) who had
moved up to lead at 34.5 with 3 to 4 very close behind as they entered
the straightaway. However, from back about sixth place with 80 meters
to go here was Gettis again, with momentum that took him up and eventually
past everyone to a win at 47.41 - amazing!!! It turns out that he has
run no track before this year with his first official HS meet a mid-April
relay leg at the Arcadia Invitational. Amazing!!! Youngsters rule -
Shuler frosh winner, Craddock soph High Hurdles, now Gettis takes the
400! Gettis 47.41 - Cunningham 47.50 - Myles 47.81 - Walters 48.11 -
Deun White 48.32 Gettis not yet 16 years old!!!
- Girls 100 Meters - Probably Allyson's best recent start as she was
out with Shalonda Solomon. Between 40 and 60 meters Felix edged slightly
away to a super 11.29 win (+1.4 mps wind) - wind legal all-time best
for Allyson (=7th US Performer at the High School level). Only behind
Angela Williams, Marion Jones, and Angela Burnham (in the Flo-Jo 10.49
Olympic Trials WR a few years back) in State all-time annals. Felix
11.29 - Solomon 11.48 - Rodriguez (Western) 11.66 - Olear (Louisville,
the nation's top frosh sprinter) 11.77 - Shana Woods 11.82
- Boys 100m - Derrrell Hutsona (Helix) seemed to coil for super start
in the middle of the track. He was out nicely, with Ronnie Drummer next
to him. The pack swallowed Hutsona up between 50 and 80 meters, but
on the inside in lane one in yellow it was Chris Henry (Edison, Stockton)
who raced an amazing final 40 meters to win in 10.56 - wind legal 0.5.
Henry 10.56 - Matt Slater 10.66 - O'Neal 10.67 - Drummer 10.70 - Hutsona
10.75 - the sense of "who slows the least" near the end of
a 100m was seemingly defied by the strong Henry here as he showed impressive
power and determination over the final 30-40 meters for the win.
- Girls 800 - Ashley Freeman (Wilson) out quick - leading at first 200
under 30 , with no one challanging her through the 400 at 62, with the
600 at 1:34.9. Super gutty race with no one ever coming really close
through a mid 2:08 win!! Freeman 2:08.86 - Kelly McCann 2:10.80 - McKinney
(LB Poly) 2:11.27 - McPherson 2:11.34 - Kirschman 2:11.82 (frosh from
Enterprise of Redding - wow!) - Alysia Johnson 2:12.27. Score here LB
Poly 42 - North 32 -
- Boys 800 - Quick early pace - Haddan with Solomon on his shoulder
at 25.2. 52.6 with Solomon leading at the 400, Cobian and Haddan closest
- 1:21.7 at the 600, with Andrew Dawson close and challenging as they
entered the straightaway--Solmon cranked the final 200, finished under
1:50 to win fairly easily, but some good depth! 1:49.79 official. Solomon
1:49.79 - Cobian 1:51.14 - Haddan 1:51.79 - Rodie 1:51.94 - Dawson 1:52.25
- Frank 1:52.54
- Girls 300 Hurdles - Great race! Ashlee Brown out super but hesitated
at hurdle one. Mackenzie Hill definite leader at the 100m point (12.9),
but Ashley Lodree really wanted a state title and she moved ahead at
the 200 at 26.2. She looked off to the races, but Mackenzie Hill gathered
well, and over the final two hurdles, moved up and past for the win.
Interesting yellow flag between hurdle 2 and 3 so we shall see! 41.31
clocking for Hill it looked like. - Hill 41.31 - Lodree 41.54 - Calhoun
(North) 42.30 - Eryn Mack 42.89 - Gooden (Wilson) 43.43 - Team Points
- Poly 42 - North 38 - Wilson 34.
- Boys 300M IH - Thomas Mack false started out - he was limping before
the race, will be interesting to see if he shows for the 4x400 final
(later reported pretty good heel bruise - he did look good in the 1600
relay - the honest effort rule puts folks in some interesting situations).
Brandon Bornes (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista) was out like a rocket, but
he killed hurdle 2 and it did not slow him a bit! He was 12.0 at the
100, and continued to charge, with Stephan Brooks (Berkeley) on his
outside shoulder up through the 200 (24.2). Down the stretch Bornes
continued to roll and he clobbered the final hurdle on the way to a
time in the low 38's. Bornes 38.00 - Brian Payne 38.09 - Stephan Brooks
38.20 - Bryon Barmer (Helix) 38.27 - Dayne Comrie 38.28. Footballer
Bornes was the least affected hurdler we have ever seen by clobbering
hurdles in a race!!!
- Girls 200 - Allyson Felix out with those outside of her (wind legal
+0.8 quickly after), Shalonda Solomon and Jasmine Lee , with an amazingly
powerful move with 150 to go off the turn. The impressive LA Baptist
senior rocketed away to a 22.52 National Federation Record, taking down
Marion Jones' 22.67 from 1992. She took a great victory lap after!!
23.37 Solomon - 23.71 Olear - 23.84 Jolanda Diego (El Camino, Oceanside)
- 23.97 Jasmine Lee LB Poly - Allyson's move against some of the nation's
best at 50m really showed the truly amazing power she has!!!
- Boys 200m - Lionel Larry (Dominguez) came to roll, charging out in
the middle of the track , rocketing past 100 winner outside of him,
Chris Henry, early on and racing away. Larry had a couple of meters
coming into the straightaway, with Ronnie Drummer (North Salinas) also
running strong. Larry, running for the team title possibly, raced hard
into the tape, racing 20.97 with the wind +0.6. Drummer 21.16 - Deun
White 21.36 - Slater 21.39 -
- Girls 3200 - 35.0 opening 200 - 73.8 for Emmaline Hartel (Birmingham)
early leader with Rachel Bryan next - Rachel took the lead up the 600
with Claire Rethmeier moving up to second at 1:54.3 (40.6 3rd 200 basic
10:40 pace) - 2:34.7 at the 800 Bryan-Rethmeier about 5m ahead of the
pack. (73.8 - 80.9 laps) - 100 at 3:15.3 (40.7 200) - 3:55.8 1200 (40.5
200) 81.2 last lap - half dozen real close to leader Bryan with 40 seconds
per half lap and 80 per lap lately. Bryan 5:16.3 at the 1600 with Rethmeier
joining her as they edged away from the pack. Ruth Graham, Phyllis Blanchard
and Shelly Leland next group of three. 6:37.1 at five laps, with Rethmeier
challenging at 2100 meters. Bryan responded and she and Rethmeier moved
away. Rethmeier took the lead just as they passed 6 laps at 7:56.7.
Rethmeier 9:14.5 with one to go, Bryan 9:18.5. Rethmeier a 10:27.32
winner looking strong! Bryan 10:35.07 - Leland 10:38.09 - Michelle Gallagher
finishing strong 10:41.37 - Phyllis Blanchard 10:41.83 next.
- Boys 3200 - Yong Sung Leal 31.2 opening 200 with Mohamed Trafeh next

800 - pack of 4 Leal - Trafeh - Ruiz - Gonzalez of Narbonne - 3:21.0
at the 1200 with Ruiz from Monroe taking over after that. 33.8 for the
next 200 with Ruiz leading. He stretched it out a bit with Jose Gonzalez
next. at 4:28.9 (34.1 for 200 #8). Trio pulling away (5:03.2 for four
and a half laps) with Tim Nelson challenging Leal for fourth. Ruiz -
Trafeh - Leal, Nelson, at 5:37.8 for five (34.4 last 200). 2200 at 6:12.5
(35.0) - 6:47.1 with two to go Ruiz -Trafeh - Nelson - Leal - Jiminez
- gap back to Alcorn - 7:21.9 (2600m 34.8 200) Nelson moves a bit with
600 to go and takes the lead in what appears to be a definite, pre-planned
move! Tim 10 meter lead with 1 to go but Leal moving with Trafeh. 7:54.3
with 1 to go. Nelson 5 meters - Leal - 5 meters Trafeh - with 200 to
go Alcorn was in 4th but had impressive momentum already - 3000m at
8:24.3 for Nelson - Alcorn was 8:27.4 and Kyle was rolling at an amazing
pace - it appeared Nelson just held on by hundredths at 8:53.3 or so.
Alcorn final 200 26.0!!! Amazing instant replay of last year - let's
await the photo!!! Alcorn's final lap had to be well under 60!!! Tim
Nelson 8:53.59 - Alcorn 8:53.66 - Leal 8:57.88 - Trafeh 9:00.22 - Austin
Ramos 9:00.31 (another big last lap) - Ghebray 9:01.69
- Girls 4x400 Relay - 3 turn stagger a bit tough to tell who is leading
- Mackenzie Hill came out charging for Wilson 54.1 with Poly 55.6 and
North 56.1. Freeman stretched out the lead like last week for Wilson
- 52.3 for Freman as they lead by 35 meters over Poly who was 53.8 on

- 54.6 for Poly (2:44.0) with 1 to go - Wilson huge lead with 150 to

- 1600 Relay Boys - Carson needed to beat Helix by four places to take
the team title (they were 23.5 and 16 points respectively with this
event remaining). LB Poly way out in front after 3 legs - Reggie Bush
got the baton way back for Helix, and moved into third with 150 to go,
then he was passed by a number of teams during his 48.8 leg, with Carson
edging by, but not enough places ahead of Helix's 8th to take the team
title. Up front Derrick Jones anchored LB Poly to a 3:14.35 winner.

- Field Events
- Boys HJ - Cole Herron no misses in the event, won at 6-10, with Matthew
Carter (El Modena), Josh Gibson (Canyon Springs), and Rudy Diez (Central,
Fr) 6-08 next.
- Boys PV - interesting with the winds generally mild and with the vaulters.
Matt Mosely (Buchanan) only able to get over 14-04 before going out
at 14-08. Billy Matthies (Rancho Bernardo) surprising no height after
14-08 start. Five over 15-00 - Graham Bockmiller, Matt Stevenson, Graeme
Hoste, Ryan McClain, and Ryan Shuler . Shuler looking good with a second
clearance at 14-00, but first time clearances at 14-08, 15-00, and 15-04.
Bockmiller was able to get over 15-04 and finished third there. Ryan
McClain (Escondido) continued to amaze with 15-04 and 15-08 clearances.
Steady as a rock Shuler a State Record 15-08 clearance on his first
effort. With the bar at 16-00 Shuler and McClain settled the event.
Shuler again sailed over on his first attempt once again, with McClain
a super weekend, but settling for second at 15-08. Ryan set the bar
at 16-04, a new National Frosh record and finally ran out of steam there
- super day, wow, a frosh state champ and Golden State Grade Record!!
- Boys LJ - Darrell Hutsona (Helix) huge start for his team. 24-09.25
(wind okay) opener to take the lead by over a foot, 24-06.5w second
jump, and 25-05.75w (+3.3) on his third effort. The rest of the pack
had Kevin Finney (Torrance) 24-01w (+2.3) on his third jump for second.
- Boys TJ - It looks like in this event the best prelims mark jumped
first. Rudy Burgess busted a 50-04.25 (wind +1.6) on jump #2 to take
the lead, but others were hot! Christopher Merriweather (Moorpark) was
48-10.75 (+1.0) on his second jump with Joel Tuosto (Greenfield jr)
48-10 (+1.3) on that same second effort. Angelo Jeffrey (Logan, Un City)
was 48-03.75 (+0.9) on his second jump, with Burgess continuing to bomb
- 50-02.5 on jump #3, 49-11 on #4. No one really improved among the
leaders until Kevin Robinson (Hoover, Fresno) was 49-07.5 (+1.6) for
a near two foot improvement on his final jump to move into second. Burgess
50-04.25 - Robinson 49-07.5 - Merriweather 48-10.75 - Tuosto 48-10.
- Boys SP - Jared Bray (Mission Bay, San Diego) came to throw!! He opened

stars Mindi Wiley (frosh from Sonoma), Desirae Gonder (Stockdale, Bakersfield)
and 6-02 jumper, favorite, Sharon Day (Costa Mesa) at clearing 5-08.
Gonder and Miller could not get over 5-10, with Day a first effort clearance
there and Wiley a second effort clearance. Good efforts but neither
could get over 6-00.
- Girls PV - Great jumping!!! - 8 over 12-00 - it got serious at 12-04,
with Elizabeth Woepse (Mater Dei), Kristen Dormanen (Temecula Valley),
and Kristen Loftin (Aptos) going out there after clearances there -
Monica Pacas (Atascadero) joined Cara Walker (Marina, HB) and Kira Costa
(Memorial, Fresno) over 12-08, Walker's 12-8 a lifetime best. At 13-00
Costa cleared on her second attempt and the Indoor National Record Holder
continued to look good, with Walker and Pacas unable to clear the 13-00
barrier this day! Costa moved the bar to 13-05 and was impressive with
a clearance on her second attempt. She tried a National Record 13-08.5,
and was over on her third attempt, but tipped it on the way down. Great
close to a short career in the Vault for Kira, who was a good heptathlete/hurdler/jumper
until recently. Kira's 13-05 is #3 Performer All-time with #5 prep performance
All-Time.
- Girls LJ - Renee Williams (Skyline) busted it early, after a foul,
with Lena Bettis opening at 19-07, Williams answered with 20-08.25w

the hammer down with Hunter 40-06, Sanford 41-10.25, and Daniels 42-04.25
(+0.0) , the latter taking the lead heading into the final jump. With
one to go it was Daniels 42-04.75, Sanford 42-02, and Hunter 40-06.25.
Hunter managed 40-01.25 on her final jump, with Sanford 41-11.25 and
Daniels a foul on their final jump. That's a lot of 40' jumps!!! Daniels
#16 US Prep All-time with the effort!

46-00!
- Girls DT - Lot of throwing over two days by some with this the second
throw in Saturday's Finals. Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) opened up
at 167-00 to lead by nearly 20 feet over Kate Hutchinson (San Clemente)
147-11. Kate improved to 157-04 on throw number two, with Billie Joe
