Moore League finals summary - Kirby Lee

Derrick Jones - Ashley Freeman and Jasmine Lee Girls 400 (Kirby Lee)

Boys 400 - Tee Phillips of Compton, third; Malik Muhammad of Poly,
second; and winner Rodney van (right) - Shalonda Solomon (LB Poly) (Kirby Lee)

MacKenzie Hill (LB Wilson) - Ed Giles (LB Poly) took the 800!!

As much as Jasmine Lee would like to deny it, her transition to a quarter-miler is almost complete.
The Poly High junior focused on the 100 and 200 meters as a freshman and sophomore and was a state finalist in both events for the last two seasons.

In February, Lee won the 200 in 23.55 seconds in the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho, for the all-time No. 2 high school indoor mark at the time. Still, there was no doubt to Poly coach Don Norford that Lee's future was in the 400.

``She wanted to be a 100-200 girl but you just look at her nervous system and can tell that she is a natural quarter-miler because she runs so relaxed,'' Norford said. ``In the quarter, you have to be very, very relaxed.

We just develop our kids the first two years and then by the junior year, we pretty much
know what is the best event for them.'' It seems to be a good choice. She won the Arcadia Invitational in 53.57 last month. In the Moore League finals on Friday at Long Beach City College's Veterans Stadium, Lee outdueled Wilson's Ashley Freeman in the 400. Lee held off a late charge by the Stanford-bound Freeman, the third-place finisher in the 2002 state meet, on a windy afternoon. Both runners were timed in 53.8.

Freeman rebounded to win the 800 in 2:11.3, an event in which she is the state leader.

``We both ran hard, it was a matter of who could make it home faster,'' Lee said. ``Even as much I hate the 400, I thought I would give it a try. You're always nervous because it is a whole lap. You learn to run it better but you are still going to be tired or you didn't run it correctly.''

The development of Lee has been a boost for the Poly, which has set national records in the 800 sprint medley and 1,600 relays. On Friday, Lee joined junior Shalonda Solomon on Poly's victorious 400 and 1,600 relays in 46.5 and 3:45.1, respectively, and finished second to Solomon in the 200.

Solomon, who ran a wind-aided 11.0 in the 100 in the preliminaries on Wednesday, posted hand-timed marks of 11.1 and 22.5 aided by strong gusts on Friday to lead Poly sweeps of the first three places and help the Jackrabbits to a 255-171 victory over Wilson in team scoring.

Poly, however, suffered a blow when USC-bound Dominique Dorsey, the nation's No. 3 returnee in the 200, finished ninth in the 100 and 200. Hobbled by a deep leg bruise from a collision in practice on
Monday, she failed to qualify for the Southern Section preliminaries.

Poly's Kendra Lilly and Wilson's Mac Kenzie Hill won two events each. Lilly won the shot put (42 feet, 6‚1/2 inches) and discus (128-7‚1/2). Hill, who will attend UCLA, won the 100 hurdles in 13.8 and the 300 lows in 42.5 to lead 1-2 Wilson finishes with Dianna Gooden.

Poly dominated the boys competition, winning running events from the 100 to the 3,200 and the 400 and 1,600 relays, for a 210-60 win. Junior Derrick Jones won the 100 and 200 in 10.7 and 21.6. Rodney Van in the 400 (48.4), Eddie Giles in the 800 (1:55.7), Kevin Word in the 1,600 (4:33.6)
and Ulices Pina in the 3,200 (9:55.7) were other Poly track event winners.
