SS Masters Meet

Boys
100 - They came out of the blocks once with no false start charged. After that good relay first leg Anton Jamir (Cypress) continued his fine day with a great start!! (wind +2.4), with Brian Woods (Los Alamitos) moving along with Lionel Larry (Dominguez) in the middle of the track, Larry most dominant over the last 30 meters to win. 10.51w scrolled on the display clock, with 10.55w second.

200 - wind +1.2 - Lionel Larry really came to run on the cool evening, blasting past the pack off the turn and racing away to a few meter win with legal wind. 20.87 is #3 nationally for the year!

400 - Malik Muhammad (Poly, LB) out and pushing Joe Cowan with an 11.7 opening 200. A group of five was close behind Malik at 23.0 at the 200, crossing that 200m start line for the halfway point together. Joe Cowan started his move into the final straightaway and led at 35.2 at the 300. From way back Tony Ramirez (Royal, Simi Valley) started a charge that had him emerge the eventual winner at just over 47.5!

800 - Looked forward to event with Solomon and Haddan! 26.0 opener with Mike on the inside and Duane in lane 2. Cobian was third with the pace rolling!! 54.6 had the duo up front still, with Cobian by at 550 meters and the leader at 1:24.0 at the 600. Solomon in second, with Giles starting a move from way back. Solomon edged away to time just over 1:52. Eight qualifiers to state.

1600 - Reid joined by Loyola duo at 29.9 at the 200, with Mike Poe fourth. Babiracki sat back a tad from the front four as they came to the 400. 61.6 at the 400 with Reid still pushing, a few meters over Matusak and Torrence. 1:33.0 at the 600 had the pace still purring, with the nine runners strung out in a line, no one in lane 2. 2:05.9 had Reid with five meters over Matusak. Chaves moved up to challenge, with the pack edging close at the 1000 with things slowing. 32.7 for 200 #5 at 2:38.6. Reid continued to lead at the 1200, with Rojas second with the time 3:10.8. Babiracki was third as they had 300 to go, with Rojas and Reid battling and pulling away!! 3:41.1 at the 1400, with Babiracki coming close with 100 to go. Reid slammed the accelerator down a 3:55.5 at the 1500 and 13.9 for the last 100 on the way to a 4:09.4 unofficially. (55.6 400 pace the last 100). Eight moved on with three “at-large” - Chaves 4:13.51 - Rojas 4:12.73 - Babiracki 4:10.99 - Reid 4:09.6 (announced this way - assume 4:09.60 also listed in program 1600 yard run -

3200 - 29.8 opening 200 for Mohamed Trafeh who had a 40m lead by the 300m mark. 60.1 at the 400 gave him a five second lead over Phillip Reid at 65.1 and the rest of the pack. Mohamed was 2:07.4 at the 800, with Reid and the group back at 2:15.3. At 3:17.6 at the 1200 Trafeh led the pack that was 3:26.7. 4:29.0 to the pack’s 4:36.8 at the 1600. 5:41.0 to 5:47.3 with the entire pack still close behind Reid. 6:52.5 to 6:57.3 with two to go as the second pack split up a bit. Reid was coming after Trafeh. Trafeh’s effort was monumental each stride. 7:58.9 to 8:03.9 with one to go - the crowd was behind the hard-working Trafeh. 8:29.9 at the 3000 and Trafeh came in with no one close. Very gutty effort - 9:02.52 for the win. Great depth with eleven to state.

HH - Wind +2.7 - Craig Woods (Dominguez) a great start, then came back to the pack by hurdles 2 and 3, with Mike Liti (Foothill) moving up to challenge at that time. Woods gained momentum and edged away from the pack, with Muir’s Marquis Profit moving strong to finish second. Woods 14.08w.

IH - Brian Payne (Trabuco Hills) led early, with Joe Cowan (St. John Bosco) out well. Craig Woods (Dominguez) bided his time until before the straightaway, coming by the 200 at 24.3 and racing away to a time in the low 37's for the win.

400 Re - Anton Jamir great lead-off for Cypress. His team still had a lead into the anchor with LB Poly and Los Alamitos close. Derrick Jones (LB Poly) and Brian Woods (Los Alamitos) anchoring for their teams. Woods closed a tad quicker with a 41.86-41.88 total for Los Al over Poly.

1600 Re - LB Poly 49.5 leading. Derrick jones on leg for Poly and he put on a huge move to come in ahead at 49.3 for that leg. Dominguez up to third with a 48.6 split. Lompoc was second. 48.3 on leg 3 for Poly, with 48.6 for Woods of Dominguez. Poly started with a 15 meter lead. Lionel Larry with great 46.3 to run Poly down near the finish, with Jeff Jacobs 46.9 split for Santa Margarita. 3:14.5 unofficially.

HJ - TJ Fakehinde (Eastside Christian, Yorba Linda) and Matthew Carter (El Modena, Orange) were the only athletes to make it past 6-05, and the duo were up over 6-07 and 6-10. Fakehinde did not have a miss during his evening.

PV - Eight to state with everyone who cleared a height going to State! Joshua Lubeck (Royal) had three misses at 14-04. Everyone vaulted at and cleared the State At-Large mark of 14-07.5. Only two could go higher. Curtis Hendrick (Marina, Hunt Bch) was 15-00 on his first trial, as was Kurt Boehm of Paraclete (Lancaster). Boehm continued his super day with a first clearance at 15-04, with Hendrick ending second at 15-04.

LJ - Rudy Burgess (Desert, Edwards) out well here!! 23-08.25 on his opener and 24-01.5 (wind +1.3) on his second, with Jeremy Woolridge (Trabuco Hills) 23-03.25 (+0.3) on his opener. Rudy 23-10.5 on his third effort to keep up the level of excellence. Kevin Finney (Torrance) 23-01.75 (+1.6) for third, with Rodney Van (LB Poly) 22-08.5w (+3.7) on his opening jump for fourth.

TJ - Rudy Burgess (Desert, Edwards) dominated here. #3 mark in the nation with his winning 49-08.5 (+1.2 mps wind), with four jumps better than 48 feet. Second was 47-10.25 (wind +1.2) in second.

SP - Mark Lewis (Arroyo Grande) took the lead at 58-09 on his second toss, with Gabe Long (Esperanza) close at 58-05 on his third effort. Mark improved to 59-07.75 on his fourth toss, with Long adding a half an inch to 58-05.5 in that round. Chad Smith (University, Irvine) was 58-01.75 for third. 62 footer John Caulfield (La Salle, Pasadena) was 55-00.5 in 9th.

DT - Kyle Davis-Hammerquist (Webb, Claremont) had a fine s73eries. He opened at 176-08 to lead through the first flight, then was 177-09 on throw number two, with John Ludden (Harvard-Westlake) 171-00 and David Sampson (Cypress) at 173-08 also over 170. Davis-Hammerquist was 180-04 on his fourth attempt to move farther ahead, with a 177-07 on his fifth. Mark Lewis (Arroyo Grande) was 176-02 on is fifth throw to move into second. Mike Singer (Valencia) exploded after a mediocre start (F - F - 117-09) with a 176-06 to end up second. Davis-Hammerquist 180-04 - Singer 176-06 - Lewis 176-02 - Sampson 173-08.

Girls

100 - Wind +2.4 as the slight breezes continued - a classic! Shalonda Solomon (LB Poly) great start with a half a meter lead after a couple of steps. Allyson Felix got it into gear one land outside of her (lane 6 Felix, lane 5 Solomon) at 30-35 meters, and she edged up and past to shocking 11.12w clocking - the time =#2 Performer all conditions and =#4 performance all-time. Allyson continues to amaze!!

200 - poor start for Felix, with the white-clad star starting to move soon after that up and past the pack to a win with +2.1 mps of wind. The time 22.65w, with Solomon running nicely 23.02w in second. Liz Olear 23.49w in fourth, with Jasmine Lee third. Six on to state . Olear a frosh, with National Record there 23.28 by Tracee Thomas (North, Riverside) a few years back.

400 - Treani Swain scratched (word later was that she had the flu), with Jasmine Lee 12.5 for the opening 100 into the lead. Jasmine was 25.3 at the 200, with a big lead at 39.0 for the 300. The LB Poly star who stepped up in distance this year in fine style (she has the nation’s #4 time at 52.85) to win at 53.6 or so. (12.5 - 12.8 - 13.7 - 14.6 100m segments).

800 - Recall that appeared an auto-timer failure. Ashley Freeman 29.3 the leader, with Treani Swain it turns out to be a shocking no-show here. 61.1 at the 400 had Freeman with a huge lead. At 1:33.6 Ashley had a three second lead over Shantae McKinney, with a 31.8 final half lap for a time at about 2:08.3.

1600 - Started out at 36.1 for the opening 200 with all within about 6 meters. Liza Pasciuto and Brenda Martinez up front. 74.5 at the 400 with Liza P still in front. The 600 was 1:53.1. 2:31.5 had Alison Costello edging up and past. 3:08.4 had Alison moving away with a 3:44.6 at the 1200 with a 12 meter lead. Farias-Eisner was second, with Kingma and Berglas next. 4:20.4 with a 200 to go for Costello leading by a lot. Alison was just under 4:57, with a good group following in good times.

3200 - Tight pack through a casual 5:32 first 1600, with mity-mite Alma Escobar of Corona the leader there. 6:54 and 8:17 for the next two lap marks, with a pack of seven close. 9:37 with one to go, Alison Costello and Lindsay Flaks 1-2 at that point. Alison finished a fine double with the win here at just under 10:50.

HH - Ashlee Brown a super start and off to the races, with Domenique Manning, fellow North star, closest. Mackenzie Hill sat way back at the start, with Brown super to the tape, with the wind +2.1 mps, a wind-aided race. 13.54 came up on the timer for Brown, with eight qualifiers!! Burrell 14.49 in eighth!! - Domenique Manning second 13.75!! 13.98 and 13.96 for Gayle Hunter and Mackenzie Hill in a cooker!!

IH - Mackenzie Hill and Ashlee Brown, who did not look good in this event last week, out even over the first three hurdles. Hill led slightly into the straightaway at 27.0 for the 200. Mackenzie ran a super race, just hesitating slightly at the last hurdle on the way to a super 41.72. #3 time nation for the year!

400 Re - Wilson was out very quickly, with Jasmine Lee moving down the backstretch and pulling LB Poly close. North of Riverside was close into the anchor, but had a less than stellar hand-off there. Shalonda Solomon pulled away from Mackenzie Hill as Poly moved to the lead. Wilson 45.46 - LB Poly 44.90 the winners. (12.7 - 10.9 - 11.1 and 10.3 splits - add to 45.0)

1600 Re - Wow!! The Great LB Wilson and LB Poly rivalry!! Wilson started off with Mackenzie Hill 54.5 and Ashley Freeman 52.8. Leg 3 went in 54.9 for Wilson. Poly was 56.1 and Jasmine Lee 53.2. 55.4 on leg 3 for Poly, with Tiffany Wright starting with a huge lead for Wilson. Shalonda Solomon moved steadily, with a super last 150 on the way to a 52.2 that totaled 3:36.85, with Wilson a fine 3:38.48 with a 56.3 final lap.

HJ - Domination by Sharon Day, as the Costa Mesa senior left all behind at 5-04.75 with 5-07 and 5-10 clearances, then two trials at 6-03.25! Only three other girls could get past 5-03 this evening.

PV - Some good vaulting. Six at 12-00 or better. Monica Pacas (Atascadero) and Cara Walker of Marina over 12-04, with Pacas fine 12-10 and 13-00 clearances on her first attempts. She could not get over 13-04 on this night.

LJ - Shana Woods (LB Poly) frosh was 19-03 on her opener, with Gayle Hunter (North, Riv) 19-03.75 on her third jump to move into the lead. No one else was able to get over 19 feet this evening, with Woods out to 19-03.25 (wind +2.3) and Hunter 19-04.75 (wind +1.3) during the finals to go 1-2.

TJ - Michelle Sanford (Woodbridge) back and dominating! Opened up at 40-08.75, 39-11.75 and a foul. Nicole Duhart (Gahr) was 39-02.25 on her second effort, with Gayle Hunter 39-00.75 on her third. None of the top three could improve until Sanford was 40-09.25 (wind +2.0) on her final effort.

SP - Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) started off a strong evening with a 47-09, 48-11, and 48-11.5 first three throws to make it tough on teammate Megan Howard, who was 47-05 through the trials and could not improve. Grant finished with three fouls.

DT - Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) was foul, 166-07, and 172-00 on her first three efforts. Kate Hutchinson (San Clemente) was 157-10, 155-04, and a foul for those efforts. Neither was able to improve in the finals, with Grant 166-09, 164-04, and 156-06.
