"The 800m... 110-plus seconds of 'Love and War!' "
There may be no more grueling event in conventional prep track and field than the 800m -- too long for a sprint and yet no real 'paced' portion as found in a distance event. It takes an iron will and a high pain threshold to succeed. You've got to love pain and you've got to be willing to mix it up! Here are Exhibits A, B and C : Cabrillo's Duane Solomon, Woodbridge's Michael Haddan and Royal's Bryan Rodie. Solomon and Rodie are the taller in the group, with the long strides obviously an ally in these wars. Haddan, on the other hand, is the more muscular of the group, with great leg speed/stamina being the calling card for the defending state champion. Solomon won the Division III SS crown in a state-leading and lifetime-best 1:50.99, with Haddan claiming Division II honors in a 'cruised' 1:52.61 clocking (the 'cruised' description on his effort came to us third-hand, with someone attributing a friend who spoke with Haddan afterward). Rodie placed fourth in Division I despite competing on a fractured ankle! He turned the ankle at night on a high-heeled shoe his sister errantly left strewn along the staircase at home, resulting in a fractured fibula. The doctor said he would not likely risk more damage by racing on it in the short term (due to the precise location/direction of the fracture), but indicated it would be painful nonetheless. Rodie advanced to the Masters' Meet in 1:53.36, about a half second off his lifetime best! Long Beach Poly's Eddie Giles (photo below) flashed great strength to pass on the outside in the final 100 meters to win the Division I crown in 1:52.29, with big-name newcomer Matt Stollenwork of San Clemente (a junior) second in 1:52.89. Above, Rodie sports a soft cast and ices down after the race. I leaned over to Bryan and quipped, "See what happens when you start trying to wear high heels?" Haddan, who was eavesdropping nearby did a quick double-take toward Bryan before catching on and cracking a smile.

Rio Mesa High senior Phillip Reid poses with Loyola's Mark Matusak (left) and David Torrence, who have pushed him to run fast more than a few times this spring (Pasadena Games, CIF-SS Prelims and CIF-SS Finals). Reid is unbeaten this year, with Matusak's only losses coming to Reid (at 1600 and 3200) and Torrence (dual meet 400), and Torrence's only losses coming to Reid and Matusak. Manuel Ruiz (Monroe) and Mohamed Trafeh (Duarte) have run faster times than these three at 3200m, but the above trio has beaten Ruiz head-on and are recently running better than Trafeh. So the question is: Are these three the best in the state? Tim Nelson (Liberty Christian) and Yong-Sung Leal (Arroyo, NCS) might not think so. Then there's defending state champion Kyle Alcorn. By the way, what's Austin Ramos (9:07.17 at Arcadia) up to these days? Jesuit has a CA tradition like no other at 3200m!
