Boys Divisions II and IV combined 3200. Rio Mesa senior Phillip Reid tried to extend his unbeaten season, picking up a hard negative-split pace from Big Bear senior Craig Hall to come across the 2000m mark in about 5:49 and begin pulling away. Duarte's Mohamed Trafeh tried clinging on, but a severe mid-week sickness truly tapped away at his strength stores in a high-caliber showdown like this one! Rubidoux's Antonio Jimenez, Cypress' David Napper, and Loyola's David Torrence and Mark Matusak also give chase here!
By race's end, "Mr. Reid" kept his unbeaten ledger intact for 2003, humming through the last 800 in about 2:05.8 to claim his second title of the day. Reid envisions going for the double at state, with a severe challenge on tap at this coming Friday's Master Meet, where recovery time will be key! Loyola's Mark Matusak and David Torrence came through huge here to mathematically clinch the Division II team title for the Cubs! Matusak later admitted he lost count of the laps during the race, thinking at one point that there were three laps left instead of two. So when he came across a lap later and heard the bell, he knew he had to turn it on. "We had to, if we wanted the 'bling, bling' ", Matusak said, in reference to a shiny CIF Championship ring. Well, they earned it. Two rings this year for Loyola, as they also won the CIF-State Cross-Country Division I title. "Bling-bling" indeed! Overall, the pace in this all-star field was fierce, with 8 of the 12 berths to Masters' coming from this two-division battle. Major kudos go to Biola University-bound senior Brian Baker, who PR'ed by about nine second to win the Division IV crown!
