NORTH¹S GIRLS TURN SAN JACINTO UPSIDE DOWN WITH EIGHT MEET
RECORDS

GIRLS MEET BEST EVER IN FLYING TIGER HISTORY
INDIO¹S GREG GARZA LAUNCHES DISCUS 191-FEET

By Louis Amestoy
SAN JACINTO There was no question that some records were going to be
broken Saturday when the athletes took the field at Tiger Stadium it was
just a question of how many and by how much.

When everything settled, the Flying Tiger Invitational
record book had been rewritten, thanks in a large part
to the sterling performance of Riverside¹s powerful
John W. North girls and so had much of the history of
San Jacinto High School¹s 10-year-old Tiger Stadium.

The Huskies, led by senior Ashlee Brown and junior
Gayle Hunter, easily set eight meet and stadium
records en route to an impressive showing at the ninth
annual meet.

Brown was named the athlete of the meet in the track
events, while Hunter earned similar honors in the
field events.

Brown, the national leader in the 100-meter hurdles,
ran the 100-meters and edged Vista del Lago (Moreno
Valley) freshman DeAna Carson by four-hundredths of a
second (11.82-11.86). Brown also won the 300-meter
hurdles, where she is the defending state champion,
and eased past teammate Lili Calhoun and Norco
sophomore Kari Snow.

Brown also ran legs on North¹s record-setting
400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay teams, which
faced little opposition Saturday.

Hunter, who has never lost at Tiger Stadium and was
already the stadium record holder in three events
coming into Saturday¹s meet, defeated Carson in the
long jump with a wind legal 19-8 effort and easily won
the triple jump with a 38-10 performance, which was
also wind legal. Hunter also placed second in the 100
hurdles behind teammate Domenique Manning, who
obliterated the meet and stadium records with a 14.07
wind-legal clocking.

North¹s Lorraine King edged Calhoun in the deepest
Flying Tiger 400 ever with a 57.48 clocking.

But North wasn¹t the only school to have athletes
shine Saturday.

On the boys side, Indio¹s Greg Garza easily defended
his Flying Tiger championship with a huge 191-foot
performance, which crushed his meet record by 22 feet
and erased the stadium record by just under 11 feet.

Garza was named the field event athlete of the meet
for his efforts, while Valley View¹s Brian Thompson
was named athlete of the meet on the track the
second consecutive award for the Moreno Valley school.

Thompson won the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.73
performance, which set meet and stadium records. He
later won the 300-meter hurdles (39.96).

Silver Valley senior Boris Terry, who had to get up at
4 a.m. to get from San Jacinto from his home in Yermo,
had a terrific day with an 11.01 clocking to win the
100 meters and with a victory in the long jump (22-1).
The 100-meter performance set meet and stadium
records, which were held by former California
Community College sprint champ Jabria Fields, who
hailed from San Bernardino¹s San Gorgonio High and
later San Bernardino Valley College.

In the distances, Murrieta Valley¹s Ian Ritchie
crushed the meet record in the 800 with a 1:54
performance. Ritchie¹s teammate, Kellen Acosta, won
the 1,600 meters in a meet record effort of 4:20.50.

However, Acosta¹s expected showdown with Indio junior
Joel Cota fizzled when Acosta dropped out of the 3,200
with about 600 meters remaining in the race. Cota
cruised to a 9:32 clocking, with Beaumont¹s Brian
Baker finishing second.

In the shot put, Hemet¹s Adam Simler won his first
Flying Tiger and he did it with a meet record effort
of 55-6. Simler is already a two-time CIF finalist and
he¹s been consistenly at or beyond 55-feet all season.
Simler¹s sophomore teammate Brandis Dew had a
noteworthy effort in the discus with a 164-foot toss,
which earned him second place behind Garza.

The day, however, clearly belonged to the girls.

Although she won just one event, Carson had a
spectacular day by placing second in the long jump
(19-3), second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.83) and
second in the 100 meters. Her meet and stadium record
came in the 200 meters, where her 24.66 effort wiped
out her previous stadium record set on April 9 at the
De Anza League meet.

Bonghabih Shey ran a tough race in the 800 meters
against a quality field that included El Capitan¹s
Cassie Atkinson, Maranatha¹s Laura Meyers and Rialto¹s
Jayme Ambos, and Shey finished where she has finished
the previous three years in first place, with a meet
record.

Shey¹s clocking of 2:15, which edged Atkinson, was a
personal best and helped make meet history. Shey
became the first athlete, boy or girl, to win an
individual event in four consecutive seasons.

Perris¹ Shannon Hobson, a state qualifier in the
discus last season, set meet records in both the shot
put and discus.

Murrieta Valley¹s Liza Pasciuto didn¹t set a meet or
stadium record but she at least looked fit during her
victory in the 1,600 meters. Pasciuto has battled some
sore quads that have kept her out of meets this
season. Pasciuto was scheduled to run the 800 but
scratched.
