Quad (Courtesy of UCLA Athletics -- UCLA Track & Field website) UCLA sweeps men's/women's clashes Ben Aragon (ex-West Hills HS) and John Barbieri (formerly of Carpinteria HS) have big days in leading the Bruin men. Aragon nails 1:50.89/800 PR and Barbieri hit 52.31/400IH mark. Candace Baucham (LB Poly HS) soars 19-9.5 in the long jump and Monique Henderson (Morse HS, San Diego) cruises to dash victories (11.67/24/29) to pace the UCLA women.
Remember all-state cross-country and track standout Luke Llamas (Canyon HS)? They said he was doing a new event this spring... but the javelin?? Just kidding. Luke was toying around with the spear at the conclusion of Saturday afternoon's meet. Earlier in the day, Llamas sparkled in his "real" new event, placing second in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:07.27, satisfying the NCAA West Regionals qualifying standard! During an informal chat, Luke mentioned afterward that the event's easy to learn, but difficult to master. He likes it!
UCLA frosh Chad Galbreath (Mammoth HS, CA) placed fourth in the 5,000m in 15:06.89. What's unqiue about that? Well, Mammoth HS didn't have a track program, so Chad's learning the sport for the first time! A Division V prep standout in cross-country, Galbreath is "learning the ropes" on the oval these days. Good reports from his teammates so far!
