Humberto Rojas wins
1600 in 4:23.3 after 1 week of training! Oh yeah... did we mention it
was a 90-mile week! Rojas benefited from the pace of early leader Wilhelm
Ghidabuday in the middle laps, then zipped by the former junior college
standout coming off the first turn of the final lap, posting a 56-second
last quarter. "Pretty much I needed a break after cross-country,
a long break," explained the distance-running standout from Estancia
High (SS). "I've been swimming and lifting a lot the last few months,
but I just started running. I'm not in shape. I felt like 40% today."
Running a 4:23 at 40%??.... Looks like his 4:14.70 lifetime PR (at state
prelims) is in trouble!

Hill (red-striped top in lane 4) powers down the home straight
en route to a heat victory in a hand-timed 56.7. Wilson also had Tiana
Hood (light-blue top and electric-blue shoes in lane 2) and Dianna
Gooden (baby-blue top in lane 6) and Marina Young fare well, despite
two restarts! Ashley Freeman started in lane
5 for the Bruins (by the way, we hope we identified the kids correctly,
as it appears there was some last-minute shuffling of some lane assignments),
but eased at 200. She ran another heat and did the same, getting a bit
of a speed workout. It appeared she then jumped in a heat of the 800 for
more conditioning! The Wilson crew appears set to dip under 3:50 right
now, and surely well under 3:40 when the chips are down! Look for the
Bruins to shine in individual events at the Simplot Games in Idaho in
two weeks, kicking off their bid to capture the state championship, not
to mention national record assaults in the relays!
Lynwood HS seems to have the hurdles covered this
year! In the photo on the left, senior Tiffany Island overcomes a late
stumble over the final barrier to win the "A" heat of the 100-meter
high hurdles. In the right photo, Lynwood High senior Daveon Brown poses
for the camera after winning the third heat of the 110-meter high hurdles
in 15.1 seconds. Why wasn't he in the fast heat with talent like that?
He was! "I ran my first heat and did poor in it, so I decided to
do it again in a later heat," explained Brown. "I didn't get
out right and hit about five hurdles the first time. I didn't hit any
hurdles the second time around. We have three guys in the 15's already."
