Bryshon Nellum (Poly, Long Beach, Ca.), who was drawn into lane one after finishing second in his heat, ran a very intelligent race, working his way up through the field and grabbed third from Chandy, 46.81 to 47.29. Both Nellum and Chandy set personal bests as did Al-Nour and Kirwa. It marked the second straight year that Sudan has taken home the gold medal.

400 LOW HURDLES

First Round (first three in each heat plus next four fastest to semifinals)

Heat 1—David Klech (California, Danville, Ca.) got out well and led the entire way to win in 51.84 to equal the best youth division (33 inch hurdles) time in the world, which is held by Wiekus Jonck of South Africa, who finished second to Klech in 52.97. Heat 2—Robert Kigen of Kenya entered with a hand time of 52.7 but given that he has little competition in his home country it is not surprising that he won. What is surprising is that given a hurdling form that is more suited to the steeplechase, it is amazing he ran 51.40 to take over the world lead from Klech and Jonck. Adel Asseri of Saudia Arabia was second at 52.80 and Sanbtiago Albero of Spain was third in 53.21.

Heat 3—Abdulagadir Idriss of Sudan entered with no time but that didn’t seem to matter as the tall long-legged runner took of very fast and was never challenged in has 51.42 win which no ranks him second in the world. USATF REPORT

Collins golden in record time at World Youth

Marrakech, Morocco - Ebony Collins cruised to a championship record time in winning another gold medal for Team USA at the 2005 World Youth Championships at Sidi Youssef Ben Ali Stadium in Morocco.

Collins of Los Angeles, Calif., ran smoothly over each hurdle in 55.96 seconds to win her second medal in a personal best time by two seconds in girls 400m hurdles. "I ran over the hurdles instead of just jumping over them like I did in the prelims," said Collins. "I figured if I got a good start and maintain my speed to keep up with the others."

The 16-year-old Collins bettered the girls' 400m hurdles championship record time of 57.54 seconds set in 2003 by Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic. The current world youth record is 55.20 set in 1984 by Leslie Maxie of the U.S. "I saved my energy until the 150/250 mark because I knew I could out sprint the others," Collins continued. On Thursday, Collins helped Team USA give a 1-2 punch in the girls 100m finals as she won silver.

Bryshon Nellum is not used to running in lane #1 in the 400m, but it seemed to work as he ran a personal best to win a bronze medal for Team USA. "Coming out of lane one took a lot of energy and it was hard," said Nellum. "I had to break the stagger from the start just to get in the race." A Los Angeles, Calif., native Nellum finished in 46.81 seconds followed by Zach Chandy (47.29) in fourth place. "I had a great time and surprised that I made the top four," said Chandy. "I was happy just making the finals."

Brandi Cross of Missouri City, Texas just missed a spot on the medal stand in the girls' 400m final finishing in 53.34 seconds. "I'm proud of my accomplishment," said Cross. "I feel like the 400m is the hardest race, but all I can do is learn from this experience and work harder the next go around."

Keeping hope alive, Kamorean Hayes advanced in the girls shot put after she tossed 14.58 meteres/47 feet, 10 inches. "I was very tired today, but I did good enough to get in the finals," said Hayes. A of Charlotte, N.C., native Hayes won Group B heading into the finals with the second best mark. Jenny Svoboda of Howells, Neb., also advanced in the girls' shot put competition with a mark of 12.80m/42-0.

Walter Henning of Long Island, NY tossed a personal best of 70.91m/232-7 to finish eighth in the boys' hammer throw (5kg) final. Desirae Gonder of Bakersfield, Calif., cleared 1.70m/5-7 to finish 12th in the girls' high jump final.

David Klech of San Ramon, Calif., leaped 7.16m/23-6 in the boys' long jump final to finish in ninth-place. Earlier in the evening he ran a world youth leading mark at the time of 51.84 to advance in the boys' 400m hurdles. Timothy Grier of Powder Springs, Ga., also advanced after he ran 53.09 in the 400m hurdles.

In the boys' pole vault competition, Scott Roth of Granite Bay, Calif., and Jordan Scott of Watkinsville, Ga., only had one day to practice on their poles which arrived the day before their competition. Both Roth and Scott cleared 4.80m/15-9 to advance in the boys' pole vault final.

In the qualifying round of the girls' 800m, LaTavia Thomas of Philadelphia, Pa., ran 2:10.17. "My race seemed to be fastest one," said Thomas. "I was just trying to make it to the finish without anyone passing me. The girl from behind kept tapping me on my shoulder to pass me." Devon Williams of Baltimore, Md., ran a personal best time in 2:11.04 to finish second in her heat. Both Thomas and Williams advanced to the next round in the girls 800m.

Darius Savage of San Diego, Calif., tossed 45.32m/148-8 in the qualifying round of the boys' discus throw, but did not advance.

IAAF Report

Friday morning

Morning Session 15 July
Friday 15 July 2005
Marrakech - Maiju Mattila and Yana Panteleyeva were separated by only a single point after two events were completed on Friday afternoon at the IAAF/Maroc Telecom World Youth Championships in Marrakech

Although it is still very early in the competition to make predictions, the Finn with a tally of 1910 points and Russian, spiralled to the top of the placings tables after the 100 metres hurdles and high jump.

Rusia also has Tatyana Chernova second quickest of the morning in the high hurdles lying in third position with a score of 1875pts.

Mattila was in eighth position after the first discipline with Panteleyeva making an inconspicious beginning well down in 16th spot.

But high jump performances of 1.78 and 1.81 metres saw them assume pole position before the shot put and 200 metres events take place tonight.

The boys triple jump competition was of a high quality, 13 of the entrants beating the qualification standard of 15.10 metres.

Bulgaria's Zhivko Petkov produced the furthest distance in Group A with a leap of 15.82m while in the second group Hector Dairo Fuentes of Cuba led the way with a 15.80m clearance.

Simone du Toit after winning the discus silver medal on Thursday, was back on centre stage in the girls shot put.

The South African with a throw of 15.05m finished well clear of her nearest rivals who will be fighting for the gold medal. The USA's Kamorean Hayes threw 14.58m and Bo Li of China 14.47m.

Anna Bulgakova led the hammer qualifiers with a best effort of 59.07m. The Russian was followed by Bianca Perie of Romania (57.72m) and Hungary's Dora Levai who threw 56.28m.

IAAF FRIDAY AFTERNOON

An Afternoon of Best Performances in Marrakech
Saturday 16 July 2005
Marrakech - Adam Mohammed Al-Nour and Nawal El Jack after showing rock solid consistency in their preliminary rounds, were crowned IAAF/Maroc Telecom World Youth 400 metres champions.

The pair of Sudanese rookies running with the abandonment their lack of experience has yet to curtail, scored a glorious double for their nation in Marrakech.

El Jack was phenomenal in all three of her races. On Tuesday she set a world leader for the year of 52.22 seconds then 24 hours later smashed the four-year-old championship record belonging to the USA's Stephanie Smith.

Her fluent short but speedy steps, carried her to to a mark of 51.83sec when winning her semi-final which bettered Smith's four-year-old time of 52.19sec.

Whether she could go quicker after two hard races was a talking point of the anoraks before the final - but she proved the doubters embarrassingly wrong.

El Jack, head focused on the finishing line when hitting the home straight, found herself for the first time under pressure.

Daniela Grgic was desperately trying to come onto her shoulder, but a short spurt from the pre-race favourite, quickly rid her of the challenge.

However the Croatian's formidable presence acted as a spur and the championship record came tumbling again to a highly respectable 51.19 seconds.

Grgic's reward for making it a tough race, saw her set a personal best of 51.30sec while Cuba's Aymee Martinez although out of contention, claimed the bronze medal in 52.04sec.

Shortly afterwards Al-Nour confirmed his impressions of being best of a good group in the earlier rounds, when clinching his 400m race in 46.56sec.

Coming off the bend, his steady acceleration blew away the challenges of Kenya's Julius Kirwa and Bryshom Nellum, the Kenyan and American like himself setting personal bests of 46.70sec and 46.81sec.

There was an outstanding world youth's 2000m steeplechase best performance when Bahrain's Tareq Mubarek Taher foiled the Kenyan pair of Abel Kiprop Mutai and Bisluke Kipkorir Kiplagat to win in 5min 23.95sec.

Mutai and Kiplagat with times of 5min 24.69sec and 5min 24.87sec, also bettered the former best performance of 5min 27.64sec set by their fellow countryman Ronald Kipchumba Rutto in Liege, Belgium, 18 years ago.

Ebony Collins who ran her fastest-ever 100 metres when claiming the silver medal on Thursday night, was in even better form in her specialty 400m hurdles.

The American with a superlative display of hurdling, dominated the race from start-to-finish, winning in a superfast 55.96sec.

That decimated the championship record of 57.54sec achieved two years ago in Sherbrooke by the Czech Republic's Zuzana Hejnova.

It easily brought her home well clear of Australia's Lauren Boden who clocked 58.30sec and Aya Miyahara from Japan who finished in 59.62sec.

There was a a Kenyan 800m one-two and a championship record for Gilbert Kipkurui Keter who with Jackson Kivuna jumped third placed Jan Masenamenla on the crown of the final bend.

Keter struck 0.37sec from Mohammed Al-Salhi of Saudi Arabia's two-year-old mark of 1min 48.79sec with Kivuna running a personal best 1min 48.37.57sec.

Masenamela of South Africa, disqualifed in his heat but then reinstated, after leading until the final 120 metres finished in 1min 49.73sec.

World 1500m leader Yuriko Kobayashi gallantly ran from the front in her event and only Sheila Chepkirui in a talented field, managed to stay with the blistering pace pounded out.

The Kenyan with 300m remaining eased into the lead with Kobayashi desperately trying to stay in contention with a spirited fightback.

But Chepkirui in the last 100 metres powered away to win in a championship record 4min 12.29sec, easily smashing Australia's Georgie Clark's four year-old championship record of 4min 14.08sec.

Kobayashi who had ran 4min 14.55sec in early June, lowered her personal best to 4min 13.96sec with Ethiopia's Bizunesh Urgesa Mohammed doing likewise, with a time of 4min 19.34sec.

Chris Noffke sealed up the long jump title with a fourth round leap of 7.97m but with it wind-assisted, it was not recognised as a championships record.

However Noffke with his final attempt flew out to a legal mark of 7.95m which bettered by 15 centimetres the performance achieved six years ago in Bydggoszcz by Sheng Yapeng of China.

Tiberiu Talnar of Romania took the silver medal clearing 7.53m while octathlon bronze medallist Cleiton Sabino from Brazil, won another with a legal lifetime best leap of 7.49m.

Biwei Gu won an uneventful high jump with a clearance of just 1.87 metres. Behind the Chinese girl Australia's Sophia Begg took silver on countback ahead of Kazakhstan's Yekaterina Yevseyeva both clearing 1.85m.

Sandor Palhegyi with a huge hammer throw of 81.89m set a championship record, erasing the former mark of 80.11m achieved by his fellow Hungarian Joszef Horvath four years ago.

Ukrainian Artem Vynnyk claimed the silver medal with a best effort of 77.88m while with his last throw Alex Smith won the bronze medal for Great Britain, throwing 73.77m.

The men's 400 hurdles heats saw David Klech of the USA set a world leader for the year of 51.84sec which was then matched by Robert Kigan from Kenya and Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Daak who both ran 51.40sec.

Russia's Yana Panteleyeva and Tatyana Chernova were the pacesetters when the heptathlon's first day of four events came to a conclusion.

Panteleyeva with a score of 3388 points, was leading her team mate by a margin of just 26pts, with Germany's Diane Rach on maintaining a challenge with a tally of 3355pts.
