Fast start for Team USA at World Youth Champs
USATF REPORT

Marrakech, Morocco - Several Team USA members turned in personal best performances on the first day of competition at the 4th IAAF World Youth Championships in Marrakech, Morocco.

Bianca Knight of Ridgeland, Miss., scorched the track in a personal best and world youth leading time of 11.34 in the first round of the girls' 100m dash. "I knew I had to win my heat to be set for the semi-finals," said Knight. "I did not intend to run that fast, but it just happened that way. I should run faster tomorrow when I'm fresh." Later in the evening, Knight ran 11.44 seconds in the semi-finals advancing on to the finals.

Ebony Collins of Los Angeles, Calif., ran 11.53 to overcome a rough start in the semi-final round to advance in the girls' 100m finals. "I had a bad start and almost fell," said Collins. "I am happy that I was able to come back at the end to move on to the finals."

Kamorean Hayes floated on air during her second attempt unleashing a personal best throw of 49.03m/160-10 to qualify in the girls' discus throw final. "I felt like I was floating on air," said Hayes. "I'm pleased that I stuck it on m release, but I know it could do better." The Charlotte, N.C., native Hayes enters the discus throw finals with the best mark. "My performance was excellent and I'm having a lot of fun," Hayes continued.

Paige Newby of Colorado City, Texas tossed 45.80m/150-3.75 to also advance in the girls' discus throw. "For me - it (performance) was not good enough," said Newby. "I just want to focus on my speed in the finals."

Darius Savage was the surprise earlier in the morning during the qualifying round of the boys' shot put. The San Diego, Calif., native Savage threw a personal best of 18.81m/61-8.5 advancing to the finals. Later in the evening, Savage finished in 10th place with a mark of 18.39m/60-4 in the boys' shot put finals. "I could have done better, but I think I did pretty good," said Savage. "It was just a matter of inches (for a medal) on my last few throws.

Cordera Jenkins of Dickinson, Texas cleared every hurdle smoothly to win his heat in 13.64 seconds in the semi-final round of the 110m hurdles. Jenkins enters the finals with the second fastest qualifying time.

It was a close race to reach the final round in the boys' 100m dash as Devin Mays of Stockton, Calif., ran 10.65 seconds to advance. "I felt good about my race," said Mays. "My starts are good, but I just need to work on finishing more because I know I can do better.

Isaiah Green of Long Beach, Calif., missed a spot in the 100m finals, but ran a personal best time of 10.66 in the semi-final round. "The competition was moving real fast," said Green. "I felt good getting out the blocks, but the last 10 meters I was not as relaxed as I wanted while running into a headwind which slowed a lot of us down."

Desirae Gonder of Bakersfield, Calif., cleared 1.74m/5-8.50 to advance in the girls' high jump final.

The magic number was 47.90 in the boys' 400m first round, for Bryshon Nellum of Los Angeles, Calif., and Zach Chandy of Laguna Beach, Calif. Both Team USA members won their heats respectively to advance. Brandi Cross of Missouri City, Texas cruised 53.76 to easily win her heat in the girls' 400m. Cross' performance is the third-fastest time heading into the next round.

Michael Morrison of Chesapeake, Va., currently has 2,929 points after four events in the boys' octathlon and is in 16th place.

Daniel Haddock already accomplished one of his major goals before stepping on the runway in the boys javelin throw. "Just being out there was an accomplishment in itself," said Haddock. "Competing against the best athletes in the world was in irreplaceable experience." The Paradise Valley, Ariz., native tossed 39.57m/129-10 in the first round of the boys javelin throw, but did not advance to the finals. "I did not hit any PRs but it was good to be out there and make friends with potential future Olympians," Haddock continued. "It was great to be associated with that crowd and it is an honor."

Elan Hilaire of Owings Mills, Md., ran a personal best time of 56.92 in the girls' 400m but did not advance. Houston, Texas natives Nicole Jones ran 4:33.31 in the qualifying round of the girls' 1,500m while Quin'Shundalyn McPherson leaped 11.34m/37-2.50 in the qualifying round of the girls' triple jump. Both did not advance to the finals.

IAAF SUMMARY

South Africa mines Double Gold in Marrakech
Thursday 14 July 2005

South African athletes have never yet won a throwing event gold medal at the IAAF World Youth Championships in their six years history. Tonight they came away with two thanks to shot putter Jan Hoffman and javelin thrower Noel Meyer who held centre stage in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Hoffman had sealed his title before his fellow countryman added to the tally with a huge winning effort in the final round.

But Meyer's win came in sensational circumstances after it seemed he had wrapped up victory with a huge second round world leading effort of 78.01 metres.

But Roman Avramenko with his very last attempt landed his spear even further to 79.22m - and it seemed the title was going to the Ukraine.

Bur Meyer kept his cool and his last attempt soared into the night sky before landing at a distance of 80.52m guaranteeing a success he fully deserved.

It was a quality competition with Paraguay’s Victor Fatecha winning the bronze medal with his opening round effort of 77.21m.

An enormous world leading throw for the year of 20.99 metres won Hoffman the first gold medal of the fourth championships gathering.

The stocky South African had targeted the championship record of 21.45m - but had to be content with winging the 5Kg ball out to his winning distance in the second round.

That early put, gave him an easy victory ahead of eastern Europeans Vladislav Tulacek and Rosen Karamfilov, who had best efforts of 19.97m and 19.86m.

Tulacek of the Czech Republic produced his winning winning effort in the last round, to thwart the challenge of Karamilov who led prior to Hoffman's massive winning throw.

The only track final of the night saw Veronica Wanjiru regain the 300m crown for Kenya with a championship record performance of 9min 01.61sec.

Only her colleague Pauline Korikwiang offered any opposition, finishing second in a time of 9min 05.42sec with Japan's Hitomi Niya running 9min 10.34sec for third place.

The British pair of Harry Aikines Ayreetey and Alex Nelson will be fairly confident of blitzing the gold and silver medals in the 100 metres final.

The duo slowing down well before the finish of their races, clearly suggested they can pull off a double for their country.

If they do the winner would emulate the feat of Mark Lewis-Francis winner of the inaugural title in Bydgoszcz six years ago.

It would also match the feat achieved by Saudi-Arabia's Yahya Saeed Al-Gahes and Yahya Hassan Habib of Saudi Arabia, who took top honours two years ago

If I don't get the record tomorrow I'll be disappointed," said Nelson, whose world leading time for this year matches that of Darrel Brown who ran a championship best10.31sec four years ago in Debrecen.

Nelson showing no nerves after two false starts from Kemar Hyman of the Cayman Islands, erupted from his blocks to win in 10.32sec.

Japan's Takafumi Kumamoto and Devin Mays of the USA, had no answer to the speed of the high-flying Black country teenager.

Earlier Aikines Ayreetey after having to endure a false start by the sprinter outside of him, quickly picked up the pace to win a time of 10.41seconds.

It was impressive running from the Commonwealth Youth Games silver-medallist, who left Daiki Goto of Japan and Dax Danns from Guyana over two metres behind.

The women's 100m saw Bianca Knight produce the best of the night with a 11.44sec clocking. But she will be wary of Franciela Krasucki who ran 2/100sec slower in her race.

Both the American and Brazilian had bettered the world leader for the year in their first round races and a close final is definitely on the cards.

Ryan Braithwaite who set a world leader of 13.34sec in the morning heats, almost came a cropper in his semi-final when just making the cut for the final.

The Barbados high hurdler who clocked 13.87sec was well beaten across the line by winner Ahmad Al-Molad from Saudi Arabia who clocked a personal best 13.64sec.

Abdelrahman Idris Taher of Egypt and Germany's Quentin Seigel also headed him with times of 13.78sec and 13.82sec.

Cordera Jenkins also ran 13.64sec, winning the second semi from Great Britain's Gianni Frankis who set a second pb of 13.67sec in space of 12 hours and France's Emmanuel Biron who clocked 13.79sec.

There was a mighty impressive victory from Nawal El Jack who in her qualifier posted the fastest 400 metres mark in the world this year of 52.22sec.

The Sudanese youngster not only spreadeagled the field but was also only three-hundredths-of-a-second shy of the championship record of 52.19sec set by Stephanie Smith of the USA four years ago.

The development programme which has prompted the emergence of the African nation, was again demonstrated by two of their male athletes.

Mohammed Al-Nour running within himself, won his one-lap heat in a time of 47.38sec and then El Farzdag Abdelbashar took his heat in a personal best 48.14sec.

But the long striding legs of Julius Kirwa showed that Kenya doesn't only possess distance runners, posting the fastest time of the night of 47.35sec.

Sha Li of China, the best triple jump performer in the world this year with a mark of 13.83 metres, needed only one jump - 13.35m and well clear of her rivals -to qualify for the final.
