        (CLOVIS) -- With the sun shining and about 68 degrees out, it was a perfect day to start the 2005 track and field season. The first race of the day was the boys' frosh/soph 3200. Madera had 15 boys in the race with Isai Orea winning with time of 10:13.8; his pace was pressed by the efforts of Max Hernandez of Clovis for about 3000m of the race.
       
        The next race up was the girls' 1600m. This was a battle between Amanda Johnson of Clovis and Vanesa Zuzarregui of Buchanan. Amanda pushed the pace from the start, with Vanesa right on her shoulder. Amanda pulled away with 100m remaining for the win in a fine time of 5:28.9.
       
         The boys' 1600m was up next. This was the most exciting race of the day and the most impressive. Benny Madrigal opened with a 64 for the first 400m, follow by a slew of Madera runners. With the race starting to unfold, James McCurley of Buchanan started moving up from hos 10th-place position on the first lap. With 600m to go, James was right on Benny's shoulder; at 300m remaining, Benny pulled to an 8-meter lead, but James closed the gap at the 150m mark and took the lead with 90m to go. This was truly exciting for all to see. Madera should have a fine 4x1600 relay as they had 5 under 4:40 with 4 under 4:34.
        
         The girls' 800 was won by Bullard's Roxanne Sellick in 2:28.7, with Fresno Edison's Courtney Gooch taking second in 2:31.2.

         Nathan Longcrier of Centennial continued to show his range, winning the boys' 800m while running negative splits. Madera had Tony Pulido and Benny Madrigal take the next two places at 2:03 and change.


Cross-country All-American Lauren Saylor of Buchanan
kicked off her sophomore track season on a winning note!

         The girls' 3200 was won by Lauren Saylor in an impressive stadium record time of 10:58.6! Arizona State University-bound Krystal Duke of Clovis was second, with Hannah Hodgkinson of Pleasant Valley (Chico) placing 3rd. Lauren took the lead from the start, having to move through some traffic on the last few laps as her pace began lapping part of the field. With one lap remaining, she pushed well and ran a 76 for the last 400m.
        
         Mikel Thomas of Clovis placed first in the boys' 3200. He took the lead from the start, with Buchanan sophomore Taylor Farnsworth on his shoulder. Mikel pushed the pace at about the 1600m mark and started pulling away. This was a fine start for a young man who has great ability and has a focus of June, I am sure.
        
         The boys' and girls' 1600 relays were both won by Bakersfield. This was a great race for all the distance runners who never get a chance to run on a 1600 relay team.
        
        Overall, this early-season meet continues to be a great start to the season. Coaches may want to look at bringing their team to this kick-off meet in the future. ##
