HELSINKI, Finland - Dwight Phillips and Team USA's women's 4x100m relay team won gold medals, and Sandra Glover and Lashinda Demus collected 400m hurdles silver and bronze medals Saturday night at the 2005 World Outdoor Championships in Helsinki.

Phillips retains world long jump title

2004 Olympic gold medalist and 2003 world outdoor champion Dwight Phillips (Kennesaw, Ga.) wasted little time in saying hello and good night to the world's best long jumpers in winning the gold medal on his first attempt Saturday night at Olympic Stadium.

Phillips equaled his personal best of 8.60 meters/28 feet, 2.75 inches, in successfully retaining his world title. His winning jump is the best in the world this year, surpassing his leap of 8.47m/27-9.50 at Madrid on July 16. Finishing in second place was Ghana's Ignisious Gaisah, who had a best of 8.34m/27-4.50. Tommi Evila of Finland earned national hero status with his bronze medal jump of 8.25w/27-0.75.

Phillips has dominated the world since 2003, when he won the world indoor and outdoor titles. In 2004, he set his personal best in Linz, Austria, which was equaled with his winning jump Saturday night, and he easily won the Olympic gold medal with a leap of 8.59m/28-2.25.

Team USA wins 4x100m relay gold

Team USA's women's 4x100m relay team of Angela Daigle (Carson, Calif.), Muna Lee (Baton Rouge, La.), Lisa Barber (Raleigh, N.C.) and Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.) posted the fastest time in the world this season in winning the gold medal in 41.78 seconds.

After winning their opening round heat Friday night in what was the fastest time in the world of 42.16 seconds, Daigle, the 2005 USA Indoor Visa Championships Series women's champion, burst to a good start and executed a clean pass to Lee, the 2005 USA Outdoor 100m runner-up. Lee gave the U.S. a slight lead before passing the baton to Barber, the 2005 USA Outdoor champion.

Barber ran the curve well before handing the baton and the lead to Williams, the 2005 world outdoor 100m champion, who beat Veronica Campbell of Jamaica to the finish line.

This was the first victory for Team USA in this event since the 1997 Worlds in Athens when Chryste Gaines, Marion Jones, Inger Miller and Gail Devers won the gold.

Demus, Glover medal in women's 400m hurdles

2005 USA Outdoor champion Lashinda Demus (Columbia, S.C.) and 2005 USA third-place finisher Sandra Glover (Sugarland, Texas) each set personal bests in winning the silver and bronze medals respectively in the women's 400m final.

Demus held a slight lead going down the backstretch before she was passed prior to the final turn by Russian world record holder Yuliya Pechonkina, who held on for the win in a world-leading time of 52.90 seconds.

Demus and Glover staged a tremendous battle down the main straight for the silver medal, with Demus getting to the line first in 53.27 seconds, which improved upon her previous career best of 53.35 seconds set in winning the 2005 USA Outdoor title in June.

The 2003 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist and four-time national champion, Glover captured the bronze medal with a career best of 53.32 at the age of 36.

Glover is accustomed to top finishes at World Outdoor Championships, having placed fifth in 1999 in Seville, Spain, and eighth in 2001 in Edmonton.

With their performances in Helsinki, Demus and Glover provided Team USA with two medals in the women's 400m hurdles for the first time since Kim Batten (gold) and Tonja Buford (silver) at the 1995 Worlds in Gothenburg.

Sell leads Team USA to fourth place in World Cup Marathon

Team USA's marathoners finished an unexpected fourth in the World Marathon Cup, accumulating a time of 6 hours, 53 minutes, 55 seconds, missing a team medal by 1:41.

Team USA's efforts were led by Brian Sell (Rochester, Mich.), who crossed the line ninth in 2:13:27, the fastest ever by an American at a World Outdoor Championship. He was followed by his training partner Clint Verran (Rochester Mich.), who finished 22nd in 2:17:42.

Rounding out the American scorers was Jason Lehmkuhle (St. Paul, Minn.), who finished 40th in 2:22:46.

Sell's ninth place finish is the highest individual placing in the world championships since 1995 when Steve Plasencia finished tenth in 2:16:56.

Peter Gilmore (San Mateo, Calif.) placed 51st in 2:25:17, and Chad Johnson (Rochester Hills, Mich.) finished 59th in 2:30:45.

Team USA's fourth place finish is the highest in the Marathon World Cup since a sixth place finish in 1999.

Japan, led by individual bronze medalist Tsuyoshi Ogata, won the World Cup with a cumulative time of 6:38:39, with Kenya second in 6:46:38 and Ethiopia capturing bronze in 6:52:14.

The individual victory went to Jaouad Gharib of Morocco, winning his second straight title in 2:10:10, with Tanzania's Christopher Isegwe finishing second in 2:10:21.

Team USA 4x400m men's relay squad advances to final

Team USA men's 4x400m relay team of Miles Smith (Cape Girardeau, Mo.), Derrick Brew (Springs, Texas), LaShawn Merritt (Portsmouth, Va.) and Darold Williamson (Waco, Texas) had little trouble in advancing to Sunday's final by winning their qualifying heat in 3 minutes, 00.48 seconds.

The sixth-place finisher at the 2005 USA Outdoor championships, Smith ran the opening leg in 44.81 seconds, before handing the baton to Brew, the 2005 Olympic bronze medalist and 4x400m relay gold medalist, who ran a 44.94 split, which gave Team USA the lead for good.

The 2004 world junior champion, Merritt stretched the U.S. lead to 10 meters in running the third leg with a split of 45.41 seconds. Williamson, who ran anchor for Team USA's 2004 Olympic 4x400m gold medal winning squad, posted a final leg split of 45.32 as Team USA finished well ahead of runners-up Trinidad and Tobago. The final will take place Sunday night.

Team USA women's 4x400m relay disqualified

Team USA's women's 4x400m relay squad of Suziann Reid (Cary, N.C.), Monique Hennagan (Stockbridge, Ga.), Moushaumi Robinson (Cary, N.C.) and Monique Henderson (Bonita, Calif.) dominated the field in its opening round heat, finishing first in 3 minutes, 23.38 seconds.

Following the race the U.S. squad was disqualified for multiple lane infractions under IAAF Rule 163.3. A Team USA appeal was denied.

Team USA Saturday night quotes from Helsinki

Brian Sell, marathon

We went out nice and easy, and went through the half-marathon in about 1:05:40, and started picking people off.

Our performance was decent, but we gotta keep our eye on the prize, and go forward. We want to get back to where things used to be in the 1980s. It's a step in the right direction.

Peter Gilmore, marathon

I felt good. I think we were trying to run the race that Brian ran. I was doing ok until about 10-12k to go. I had a real bad side stitch, and that did me in. It wasn't my best day.

We get a lot of crap from people back home about how bad American distance runners are. We stuck it out...it's a sign of improvement. Our team got fourth. It's a great showing for the U.S.A. Everyone had the guts to finish and proud to put on the USA uniform. I think it's a small breakthrough for American distance running. I'm glad to be part of that.

Clint Verran, marathon

I thought finishing fourth as a team was real significant. Brian ran a great race. I thought I ran pretty respectable, and just kept moving up. My goal was top 25, so I can't complain.

(Hanson's/Brooks) runners were ninth and 22nd today. I think that people will see that what we're doing in Rochester, Michigan is a good thing. I'm proud of those guys.

Jason Lehmkuhle, marathon

It was the classic marathon crash for me. I felt really good through the halfway point. Then at about 30K, the wheels started to come off. We hung in there and did really well as a team. (Finishing fourth) is a little bit better than we expected. We are really happy with how we did. It's a difficult course, but not the hardest marathon course.

Chad Johnson, marathon

I didn't really have it today. I wanted to keep going. I heard my teammates were running well, and I wanted to be part of that and at least finish the race. I'm really happy for my race. Two of the guys I train with all the guys ran really well. If I keep training with them, I will have my day. The course had a lot of turns and a lot of uphills and downhills. It's a beautiful course.

Lashinda Demus, 400 hurdles

I went too fast. Obvious today she (Russia's Yulija Pechonkina) was to get it. It was written before we even knew it. I know I can do better. I wasn't better. It was a personal best. I'm satisfied and but I'm not happy. That silver is still not gold.

Sandra Glover, 400 hurdles

I'm pleased. I try not to look around in a race. I do believe that I got a little bit stronger than I normally do because I don't think (Russia's Yulija Pechonkina) really got away from me like she normally does. I put on a strong kick, and hers is a little bit stronger than mine. But I'm pleased to get a season best and a personal best. The timing was pretty good.

Derrick Brew, 4 x 400 meter relay

The objective was just to get the job done and get the stick to Darold.

LaShawn Merritt, 4 x 400 meter relay

The first and second legs did what they had to do. I got the baton. Darold had a long week, so I had to open up a gap. We got the stick around and we won.

Miles Smith, 4 x 400 meter relay

I ran an ok race. The objective was to get in the finals, hold on to the baton, and we're in.

The top three finishers in the open 400 will run in the finals, and one of us who ran tonight. I hope it's me.

Darold Williamson, 4 x 400 meter relay

We're trying to get the stick around today and run smart. We weren't trying to set any records. We just wanted to get the stick around and qualify for tomorrow's final. We've got Jeremy (Wariner) and (Andrew) Rock tomorrow, so we are looking good.

Lisa Barber, 4 x 100 meter relay

I'm very thankful and blessed that we came out victorious. We made sure we passed safe. All of us did a great job.

I made sure I got the stick ok from Muna, and my job was to maintain or extend the lead and make a clean pass to Lauryn.

Angela Daigle, 4 x 100 meter relay

We've only been able to get together as a group for only a week, because everyone's had their individual events. As a whole this is only our second time together.

You're always excited about trying to achieve something great. It's an adrenaline rush. There's no better feeling than to be a part of history. It's an honor for someone to choose me and say 'represent our country'.

(on her Athens 2004 wristband) It's something I picked up to remind myself to never give up. It's go until I can't go anymore.

Muna Lee, 4 x 100 meter relay

I think we were being kind of conservative. We just wanted to get it around. We weren't thinking about anything else. We knew we could do it. As long as we did the same things that we did yesterday, we would be fine.

Lauryn Williams, 4 x 100 relay

I was trying to run it as fast as I could. I was pretty sure that we were winning it. The next thing that went through my mind was a world record. I was trying to stay focused and get to the line as fast as I could. I was nervous before the race. I got an excellent pass. I think I left right on the mark.

Dwight Phillips, long jump

I'm very, very happy. I was able to come out here tonight and dominate the field. I tried for the world record, but I came out foul, foul, foul, foul, foul.

I also came out with a win, so I'm satisfied with that. This means a lot to me. I have a personal goal to win four world championships. This is number two, so I have two more to go.

On the first jump, I knew it was going to be hard for everybody to surpass that jump. I was hoping someone in the competition would come close, so I could jump even farther. It would be nice to have someone push me. After a while, it feels like practice.

I think I'm capable of jumping nine meters. I don't jump far in practice. Earlier this year in Madrid, I had a marginal foul and it was right there at nine meters. Technically, I felt I got my feet to the board. I had a good landing earlier this year, I had problems with landings. I think it was technically a sound lunch. It was not my best jump, but technically, it was a sound jump.

IAAF RECPORT DAY 8

Helsinki 2005 – Highlights, Day 8
Saturday 13 August 2005

Helsinki, Finland - When these World Championships in Athletics were first mooted back in the late seventies/early eighties, there was a substantial body of opinion, which believed that the ‘three per event per nation’ that prevails at the Olympic should be abandoned, and the best in the world allowed entry.

After some debate, the status quo was retained, in the belief that it would be best to share out the spoils. After all, if the US had the top three sprinters, they would take all three medals; similarly the Soviet Hammer throwers; equally the British middle distance runners. The last phrase will raise a rueful smile back in Old Britannia nowadays. Yes, in 1980, five of the world’s top ten milers were British, but that tradition laid down and died in the 1990s. There was no Brit in the 800 and 1500 metres finals here, but Belarus is keeping up the old Soviet traditions in the Hammer, and the Americans are dominating the sprints.

Ethiopian quartet dominate 5000m

When the US quartet (defending champions, in this John Capel are now allowed, as well as the national select trio) took first four places in the 200 metres, we thought it might be a while before we saw that again. Well, yes, all of two days! Because the Ethiopian women gave us a reprise in the 5000 metres. Surprise, surprise, you might think. Not necessarily.

The Chinese, Sun Jingjie and Xing Huina have offered some real opposition to the Ethiopians over the last two years, with Sun’s bronze in the Paris 10,000 metres, and Xing’s surprise victory in the Athens 10,000 metres. They couldn’t prevent a clean-sweep of Ethiopian medals in last weekend’s long race here, but Sun certainly made her presence felt in the 5000. After a group start, she threw in a 2:52 second kilometre that whittled he field down to the East Africans – Ethiopians, Kenyans, and a Tanzanian – and her colleague, Xing. But that was her contribution, and after another kilometre she was shot.

Xing took over with three to go, but when 10,000 metres champion Tirunesh Dibaba took over at the bell, the ‘foreign’ hopes were gone with the wind. Only Olympic champion, Meseret Defar could go with her, and looked ominous with 200 metres to run, as the pair got well ahead. Tirunesh would not be denied the double, she stayed ahead of Defar throughout the final lap, which she covered, as she had in the 10k race – in just over 58 seconds, viz 58.19. Tirunesh won in 14:38.59, Defar was second in 14:39.54, Elegeyehu Dibaba was third in 14:42.47, and Meselech Melkamu fourth in 14:43.47. But such was the quality of the race that the next six set personal bests, two of which, for Zakia Mrisho Mohamed of Tanzania, and Olga Kravtsova of Belarus, were also national records.

Pechonkina gets it right at last

In the more explosive events, Yuliya Pechonkina finally got it right, and won a World title to go with her 400 metres Hurdles World record. When the Russian set her record of 52.34 just before the World Championships in Paris ’03, it looked as if she was set to improve on her second place in the previous champs in Edmonton. But, it was not to be. Pechonkina could only finish third behind the victory of Jana Pittman of Australia. Things got worse in Athens. Pechonkina finished last while the formerly unheralded Fanny Halkía of Greece ran away with the title.

Pechonkina had looked good through her heats here, but so had the two Americans, Sandra Glover and Lashinda Demus. And it was the latter who blasted out of the blocks from lane eight, to take an early lead. But Pechonkina kept her cool, took over at the eighth hurdle, and was never troubled on the run-in. She won in 52.93, only her second time under 53seconds. Demus won the domestic battle for silver, in 53.27, a personal best, as was the 53.32 for bronze for Glover.

All over from round one

It was no contest in the women’s shot, as Nadezhda Ostapchuk dashed her opponents’ hopes with 20.37 metres in the first round for a two and half metre lead. That lead was diminished to less than a metre by the Russian, Olga Ryabinkina, who threw 19.64 metres. But Ostapchuk responded with 20.51 metres to wrap it up at the last. Not quite as dominant as her colleague, Ivan Tikhon in the men’s Hammer, but easily good enough for Belarus’s second gold of the championships. Ryabinkina took silver, just two centimetres ahead of Valerie Vili of New Zealand, who took bronze.

Phillips tops out a night of ‘home celebrations’

Dwight Phillips also wrapped up his Long Jump title with his first attempt, his 8.60 metres also being the best in the world this year. It was just as well his first attempt was a class ahead of the rest, because the Olympic champion proceeded to foul the rest of his jumps.

Ignisious Gaisah jumped a Ghanian national record of 8.34 metres in the fourth round, but Tommi Evila of Finland who jumped 8.25 metres in the fifth, moved into the bronze medal position, and got the biggest cheer of the night. And that was from someone sitting in the IAAF desks! There’s just no equanimity in some people, is there?

Smooth changes for USA quartet

The US women’s 4x100 metres quartet rubbed their men’s noses in it again when they gave as smooth a display of baton changing as sprinting, to take the gold medals with a world leading 41.78. Jamaica, who looked as if they might challenge made a mess of the last change-over, but were well enough clear to take silver in 41.99. The Belarussian quartet outdid themselves, to set a national record of 42.56 to take bronze. US joy was unconfined, until it transpired that their 4x400 metres women had been DQ’s after cutting into the kerb too early on the second leg.

France triumph in men’s relay

In the absence of the US men’s sprint relay squad, who had dropped the baton at the first change-over in the heats, to emulate their disasters of Gothenburg ‘95 and Athens ’97, France, would you believe some slick baton changes, took gold in a world leading 38.08? Trinidad & Tobago took silver in 38.10, and Olympic champions, GB & NI ran 38.37, to take bronze, their first medal of the championships.

Audience - The stadium was a sell-out this evening.
