USATF DAY'S SUMMARY OF DAY 2 ACTION

Gatlin blows away the field in winning 100m gold in Helsinki

HELSINKI, Finland - 2004 Olympic 100m gold medalist Justin Gatlin added a world outdoor championships gold medal to his impressive resume with an emphatic victory in the men's 100 meters Sunday night at Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.

Gatlin got off to a strong start and pulled away at the end in posting a seasonal best time of 9.88 seconds, a performance bettered in his career only by his 2004 Olympic gold medal winning time of 9.85.

Jamaica's Michael Frater was the runner-up to Gatlin, finishing well back in 10.05 seconds, with 2003 world 100m champion Kim Collins of Saint Kitts & Nevis, the bronze medalist in 10.05. Gatlin's U.S. teammate, Leonard Scott (Irvine, Calif.) was sixth in 10.13.

Gatlin's winning margin of 17/100ths of a second is the greatest in World Outdoor Championships history, bettering Carl Lewis' 15/100ths of a second winning margin in winning the 100m gold medal at the 1987 Championships in Rome in 9.93 seconds.

Gatlin's time is the sixth-fastest gold medal winning performance in World Outdoor Championships history, bettered only by Maurice Greene (1999-9.80, 2001-9.82, 1997-9.86), Great Britain's Linford Christie (1993-9.87) and Carl Lewis (1991-9.86, then world record).

In the men's 100m semifinals earlier Sunday evening, Leonard Scott overcame a mediocre start to grab the lead halfway through and win the first semi in 10.08 seconds. 2004 Olympic Games 200m gold medalist and 100m fourth-place finisher Shawn Crawford (Raleigh, N.C.) finished in eighth place in 10.28 and did not advance to the final.

Gatlin had the slowest reaction time in the field (0.154) in the second semifinal, but still won the race in 9.99 seconds.

Runner-up finishes good enough for U.S. women 100m sprinters

2004 Olympic 200m silver medalist Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.) ran in the first heat of the women's 100m quarterfinals Sunday night and advanced on to the semifinals with her runner-up finish in 11.22 seconds. Williams finished behind Jamaica's Veronica Campbell, who won in 11.17.

In the third heat, 2005 USA Outdoor 100m runner-up Muna Lee (Baton Rouge, La.) got out well from the start and held to finish second in 11.22 seconds to easily advance to Monday's semifinals. Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas won the race in 11.10.

2004 Olympian and 2005 USA Outdoor 100m runner-up Lisa Barber (Raleigh, N.C.) made it a clean sweep for Americans in the second-best position with her runner-up finish in heat 4 in 11.15 seconds. Sherone Simpson of Jamaica crossed the line first in 11.12.

Carter rides seasonal best time to 400m hurdles final

Two-time Olympic Games fourth-place finisher James Carter (Raleigh, N.C.) posted a seasonal best time in winning the first of three men's 400m hurdles semifinals at Olympic Stadium.

Carter charged with 150 meters to go and took the lead down the main straightway and earned the victory in 47.78 seconds.

2005 USA and NCAA Outdoor champion Kerron Clement (Gainesville, Fla.) also advanced to the final with his runner-up finish in 48.89 seconds.

2005 USA Championships runner-up Bershawn Jackson (Raleigh, N.C.) asserted himself off the final turn to win heat 3 of the men's 400m hurdles semifinals in 48.19 seconds. The men's 400m hurdles final will take place Tuesday evening.

Clark wins 800m semifinal race

Two-time U.S. women's 800m outdoor champion Hazel Clark (Knoxville, Tenn.) pulled away in the first semifinal early and held off a charge to win the race in 1:59.00. Clark, a 2004 Olympian, competes in the women's 800m final on Tuesday.

In semifinal #2, two-time NCAA Outdoor champion Alice Schmidt (Chapel Hill, N.C.) placed sixth in 2:01.43, and in heat #3, 2005 USA Outdoor Championships runner-up Kameisha Bennett (Knoxville, Tenn.) got off to a good start but fell halfway through the first lap.

Bennett claimed that she was clipped from behind causing her to fall. Her left ankle was bleeding as she walked through the mixed zone. After the race Team USA filed a protest on her behalf claiming obstruction. The protest was denied.

Waltz, Rome finish well in men's discus

2005 USA Outdoor champion Ian Waltz (Chula Vista, Calif.) and 2004 Olympic Trials champion Jarred Rome (Chula Vista, Calif.) each looked impressive in the final of the men's discus Sunday night.

After placing 22nd in qualifying at the 2004 Olympic Games, Waltz finished in fifth-place with a best throw of 64.27 meters/210 feet, 10 inches. Rome, who narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic final last year in Athens, also looked impressive with his seventh place finish with a best throw of 64.22m/210-8.

Elsewhere, the women's heptathlon ended Sunday evening with 2005 USA Outdoor champion Hyleas Fountain (Athens, Ga.) placing 12th with 6,055 points. Fountain's best events during the competition were the 100m hurdles (13.60 seconds-1,036 points) and the long jump (6.50m/21-4 - 1,007 points). 2005 USA heptathlon runner-upVirginia "GiGi" Miller (State College, Pa.) finished 16th with 5,911 points. Her best event was the 100m hurdles (13.45 seconds - 1,058 points.

IAAF DAY 2 REPORT

Helsinki 2005 – Highlights, DAY 2
Sunday 7 August 2005

Helsinki, Finland - Justin Gatlin underlined his role as 100 metres favourite, when he pulverised the rest of the field in tonight’s final at the 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Gatlin of the USA joins an illustrious group of predecessors - Carl Lewis, Linford Christie, Donovan Bailey and Maurice Greene, all of whom like him were concurrent Olympic and World sprint champions. But none did it in quite the fashion that Gatlin achieved in Helsinki’s 1952 Olympic Stadium.

Biggest ever margin of victory

With his colleague, Leonard Scott getting off to his usual bullet start, it was just the impetus that Gatlin needed to get him moving. And when he did, the contest was over. Gatlin won in 9.88, but his margin of victory, 0.17sec, over Michael Frater of Jamaica, second in 10.05sec, and Kim Collins of St Kitts & Nevis, third in the same time, was the biggest in the 22-year history of these championships.

It was, of course a shame that new World record holder, Asafa Powell of Jamaica could not be here, due to injury, but Gatlin was unstoppable last night. Frater, who is Powell’s training partner in Kingston, got closest, but ‘close’ hardly describes it. Frater edged Collins, who was the big surprise.

The defending champion from St. Kitts and Nevis had surprised his detractors by getting to the final, clocking a season’s best of 10.00, a time slower than that which won him the title two years ago. But Collins went even better in the final, and proved himself just as adept a competitor as Gatlin. His bronze medal was just reward for tenacity.

Klüft whittles down the main opposition

After Saturday night’s rain, the last vestiges of the sunset sliding up the stadium tower provided an elegant backdrop to the late evening proceedings. And the golden glow settled again on Carolina Klüft. The Swede played the crowd just as well as the rock stars, who had played in the opening ceremony on Saturday night. But Klüft has a talent that none of them will ever match. She is a winner in all arenas. She added a second World title to the one she won in Paris two years ago, not forgetting the Olympic and European titles, but this was the best competition she has ever had.

For she and we had reckoned without the return to form and fitness of 1999 World champion, Eunice Barber of France. Barber had shot into a 153 points lead after the first two events on Saturday, but Klüft was undeterred. She continued to blow kisses to the crowd and cameras, while she whittled the deficit back to just two points at the end of the first day.

Barber under-performed in two of her best events, the Long Jump and Javelin on Sunday, but set off at such a lick in the final event, the 800 metres that it looked as if she might yet steal the title. But with 200 to go, Klüft switched on the afterburners, and even ran a personal best, 2.08.89, to take the gold with 6887 points, to Barber’s 6824.

Smith hits 15.11m

Trecia Smith went one better than Jamaican colleague, Frater. Smith won the women’s Triple Jump in style, taking the lead in the fourth round, with 14.91 metres, then increasing it on her next attempt, to 15.11 metres. That is the best in the world this year, and put the contest beyond doubt. But she rubbed it in with another leap over 15 metres, just – 15.01m! Olympic champion and TDK Golden League leader, Tatyana Lebedyeva of Russia withdrew just before the final, with a recurrence of Achilles’ tendon spasms. But she would have needed to pull out all the stops to defeat Smith.

Kanter puts Alekna under pressure

Gerd Kanter of Estonia thought that he had rattled another Olympic champion, briefly! Virgilius Alekna of Lithuania had assumed the lead in the discus with a third round throw of 68.10 metres, but the Estonian, cheered to the rafters by the neighbouring Finns overtook him with 68.57 metres in the next round. Alekna fouled in round five, and then with everyone holding their breath for Kanter, Alekna stifled their cheers, by puling it out at the last – a magnificent 70.17 metres championship best with the final throw.

World Record

The sun shone on Olimpiada Ivanova as she took a Sunday morning stroll through the streets of the Finnish capital. But at the end of her 20k hike, she was $160,000 richer. Because in retrieving her World title which she first won in 2001, she netted $60,000, and in setting the first World record of the championships, 1.25.41, to break Yan Wang of China’s previous record, 1:26:22, she also added a $100,000 bonus.

Good size crowds again

Attendance at this morning's session, the second day of competition at Helsinki 2005, was 27,705. The figure for the afternoon session was 31,456.

IAAF STORY - JUSTIN GATLIN'S 100M WIN

“So I did get some kind of record” - Gatlin
Sunday 7 August 2005

Helsinki, Finland - It didn’t take long for Justin Gatlin to realize that he would add the World championship in the 100 metres to his Olympic title. Less than 60 metres to be precise.

"Actually I yelled half way through the race," the 23-year-old Gatlin said, sporting a wide grin after his dominating 9.88 victory. "I knew that it was over. I knew that I had it."

By the time he powered through the finish line, the near-capacity crowd at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium and an international television audience of four billion knew it was over too.

Largest ever winning margin

"I really didn’t know the margin of victory until I looked up at the scoreboard," Gatlin said. "Whatever it takes to win. Whether that means winning by a mile or an inch, I’m there."

In terms of World 100m titles won in the history of these championships, his margin was closer to that proverbial mile. His .17 victory margin over runner-up Michael Frater was the largest ever in a World championship, topping the .15 spread with which Carl Lewis won the 1987 title in Rome.

"So I did get some kind of record," he said, laughing. "It’s a great consolation to go out there and show how dominant I am this year."

Gatlin has displayed remarkable consistence this year, winning seven of his nine finals. Last year, his only victory came when it counted most, in the Olympic final in Athens, when he emerged victorious from perhaps the finest 100 metre race ever. The importance of claiming his second consecutive major title in as many tries didn’t escape Gatlin, who, since leaving the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2002 to pursue the sport professionally, has repeatedly said that his aim is become one of the finest sprinters ever. It’s not difficult to argue that he’s off to a very strong start.

"I think it really stakes the claim that I’m a champion," he said, "that I run like a champion, and that I show up big when it’s time to show big at championships."

No one who witnessed his command performance could disagree with Gatlin’s assessment. Despite his typical rocky start which saw the entire field about even through the first 30 metres, his dominance the rest of the way certainly backs up his assertions.

"The race was a great race," he insisted. "The start wasn’t the greatest start. But then again, everybody in the field has a greater start than me. But the second half, I pulled away from the field. What more can you ask for? I was victorious and I have the gold medal."

Missing Asafa

In the weeks building up to the championships, much attention was devoted to the absence of recently-minted world record holder Asafa Powell, who was knocked out of the competition with a groin injury. Gatlin insisted that he missed his rival.

"Of course I would have loved Asafa to be here. The race would have been faster. And I think the world record would have been threatened." But his absence, Gatlin said, wouldn’t have altered the result. "And I still think I would have beat him."

Relaxed...a different man

A year older and wiser, Gatlin said the biggest difference prior to his Helsinki and Olympic showdowns was how relaxed he felt here.

"Actually, I had to hype myself up to go out there to come victorious," he said. "I know I had a target on my back and I know these guys were running to go out there and scalp my head. And I had to come through victorious."

But Gatlin is hardly finished. After a day of rest, Gatlin returns to action in the 200 on Tuesday where he says he’s ready to improve on his bronze medal showing in Athens.

"There’s a different Justin this year than last year," he said. "Last year I was a little overwhelmed with winning the 100, and I was really relaxed with the 200 running the rounds. This year, I want a gold medal in the 200 and I want a gold medal in the 4x100. I want three gold medals and that’s what I’m going for. When I start the 200," he said, "you guys are going to see a different Justin Gatlin."

USATF REPORT - MORNING SUMMARY

Team USA sprinters, vaulters & steeplechasers advance in Helsinki
HELSINKI, Finland - Many of Team USA's athletes in the women's 100 meters, women's 400 meters, men's 3,000m steeplechase and women's pole vault successfully advanced through qualifying rounds Sunday at the 2005 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

Williams, Lee, Barber advance in women's 100 meters

2004 Olympic silver medalist Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.) got off to a brilliant start in heat 5 of the women's 100m opening round and shut it down late to finish second in 11.38 seconds and qualify for this evening's quarterfinals.

Despite the slowest reaction time in the field (0.225) 2005 USA Outdoor runner-up Muna Lee (Baton Rouge, La.), rallied to finish second in the third heat of the women's 100m opening round in 11.40 seconds.

In the 8th heat of 100m qualifications, 2005 USA Outdoor champion Lisa Barber (Raleigh, N.C.) won comfortably in 11.32 seconds to advance to this evening's quarterfinals. Barber won a gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the 2003 World Outdoor Championships in Paris.

Team USA women one-lappers all advance

2004 Olympic 4x400m gold medalist and 2005 USA Outdoor runner-up Dee-Dee Trotter (Knoxville, Tenn.) had little trouble in the opening round of women's 400m qualifying. In heat 2, Trotter took command late in the race and cruised to the win in 51.44 seconds.

Sanya Richards (Austin, Texas), a two-time USA Outdoor national champ and 2004 Olympic 4x400m gold medalist, ran the morning's second fastest time in winning heat five in 51.00 seconds.

2004 Olympic 4x400m gold medalist and 2005 USA Outdoor third-placer Monique Henderson (Bonita, Calif.) asserted herself in the backstretch and floated to an easy second place finish in heat 6, running 51.65 seconds.

Lincoln places fourth to advance in steeplechase

Reigning USA 3,000m steeplechase champion Daniel Lincoln (Fayetteville, Ark.) ran a strong race in heat 3 of the men's steeplechase qualifying to advance on to the final on Tuesday. Lincoln placed fourth in his race in 8:21.39.

2005 USA runner-up and 2004 Olympian Anthony Famiglietti (New York City) spent a great deal of time in the lead during heat 2 of the men's steeplechase qualifying before finishing just shy of moving to the final by placing sixth place 8:21.84. 2003 USA champion Steve Slattery (Boulder, Colo.) finished 10th in the first heat in 8:36.01 and will not advance to the final.

Schwartz, O'Hara advance in women's pole vault

2004 Olympian Jillian Schwartz (Jonesboro, Ark.) advanced to the final in the women's pole vault after clearing 4.45m/14-7.25 in her first attempt in qualifications. Schwartz will participate in the final on Wednesday with teammate and 2005 USA Outdoor runner-up Tracy O'Hara (San Diego, Calif.), who cleared 4.40m/ 14-5.25.

2000 Olympic gold medalist, former world record holder and two-time world outdoor champion Stacy Dragila (Phoenix, Ariz.) had numerous misses during the competition and did not qualify for the final after posting a top clearance 4.40m/14-5.25.

Tough day for American discus throwers

In women's discus throw qualifying, 2004 Olympic Trials champion Aretha Hill Thurmond (Opelika, Ala) threw a disappointing mark of 47.15m/154-8 and failed to advance. It was the same story for two-time Olympian Seilala Sua (Anaheim, Calif.), who threw 57.68m/189-3, and 2005 USA Outdoor champion Becky Breisch (Lincoln, Neb.) who had a best throw of 57.16m/187-6.

2005 USA 20 km race walk champion Teresa Vaill (Gainesville, Fla.) was unable to finish the race Sunday at that distance.
