About DyeStat Elite - How to Get Ranked - 2001 outdoor DyeStat Elite cutoffs

by John Dye

BALTIMORE MD 8/13/01 -- The lists total 5,074 in the next to last ranking of the 2001 outdoor season. Input closes August 15, and final season rankings will be published August 20. This update is based on input received as of August 13. The 2001 outdoor database now contains 8,932 performances (only the best mark per athlete is ranked in each event) drawn from 854 meets across the country.

As always, remember that the database only includes performances that meet our 2001 outdoor cutoffs, which are intended to yield the top 100 athletes in the US for each event. Cutoffs for events which are not competed in most meets, (such as the javelin, 400 meter hurdles, 1500, 3000) are set to yield fewer than 100 athletes. Cutoffs are adjusted each year based on the numbers ranked the previous year. Here is a table showing how many performances are ranked for each event as of the current lists. It is evident that cutoffs will be tougher again in 2002, as many events have produced far more than 100 athletes.

Abbreviations: h=handheld (0.24 added up to 200 meters, 0.14 added for 300 and 400 meters). w=wind. c=converted (1600/3200 times are converted to Mile/2Mile equivalents by adding 1.6 and 3.4 seconds). If an athlete's best performance is wind-aided, the best legal mark, if known, is also ranked. Known handheld times are ranked below automatic times.
