Texas sprinters may threaten national records

Christa Avena wins the lawsuit and the race in Nevada
Another case of a DQ after a scratch (Sprint star Tiandra Ponteen and Eleanor Roosevelt HS were sidelined in Maryland this week.) had a happier ending in Nevada, but only because a track parent is a lawyer. A Nevada court overruled the sectional meet jury of appeals and Bishop Gorman Las Vegas sophomore Christa Avena was allowed to run and win the 1600 meters in the Nevada State Meet. Rivalries between Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada and between public schools and private schools were the background of the dispute. Read Winners and Losers, by Bishop Gorman coach Phil Lawton.

DyeStat correspondent Becca Gillespy caught Arlington WA jr McKane Lee recently on a day when he cleared 16-1 (left, above). Lee's season best is 16-6, making him one of the nation's leaders.

Sanya Richards in Pre Classic for USA
Two pieces of good news this week for St. Thomas Aquinas FL sprint star Sanya Richards: She has been cleared for US citizenship and she will run against world class athletes in the Prefontaine Classic 400 meters this weekend. A Pre Classic news release noted that Sanya's season best of 51.68 would have placed her third in the Portland Grand Prix 400 last weekend, and that experts believe she can challenge the US prep record of 50.74 set by Monique Henderson 2 years ago. Has anyone forgotten that the Pre Classic was the stage for Alan Webb breaking the HS mile recored last year?

See Pre Classic at 11pm Eastern Sunday on ESPN2 .

Kaltenbach winning the mile
at Penn Relays in April

Colorado State Meet
May 17-18, 2002 - Complete Results 5A-4A-3A-2A -
Megan Kaltenbach wins four gold medals -- 800, 1600, 3200, and 4x800 -- in the 5A meet at Lakewood. She got two of them on Day 1 with a 2:10.06 and 10:42.67 double within 75 minutes. With the shorter race coming first, Kaltenbach jogged the first half of the 3200 conservatively in 5:33 but came back with a huge negative split of 5:09.

The tight schedule thwarted Kaltenbach's goal of breaking Melody Fairchild's state records (10:34.09 in the state meet and 10:21.37 all time). "I will go after Melody's records next year," Kaltenbach told the Denver Post, but the quad is the goal this year. "Nobody has ever done that in the state meet."

Kaltenbach got the other two golds on Saturday, anchoring Smoky Hill to a state record 9:19.09 4x800 with a "chilled" 2:13 leg, and then returning 2.5 hours later to win the 1600 in 5:02, again with negative splits (2:36 and 2:26).

Noteworthy Notes

  • Snow in May - The big Eddy Meet at Schnectady NY was cancelled by a freak 3-hour spring snowstorm. Meanwhile, they were a hardier sort at Hanover NH, where a meet continued in 34 degree, snowy weather.
  • Powerhouse Eleanor Roosevelt HS and star sprinter Tiandra Ponteen have been disqualified from the Maryland state meet because of a late scratch by Ponteen in their regional meet. Ponteen had been entered in the 200 and 400. She scratched from the 200 and then ran the 400 and three relays. But because the scratch was not made 3 days prior to the regional meet, the 200 counted as a 5th event, one more than the four allowed.
  • Marquette MO sr Amarachi Ukabam threw the discus 175-2 in her sectional meet. The defending AOC champion and 3rd in World Youth games in Hungary last year has signed to attend Ohio State next year.
  • There was some unusual team depth at the California Southern Section division finals. Poly Long Beach girls (above, by Bill Leung) swept the first four places in Div 1 (largest schools) in both the 100 (11.51 to 12.01) and 200 (23.31 to 24.30) and 3-4-5 in the 800 (2:13.63 to 2:15.64). Is there any wonder that they win almost all the relays? In this meet, they were 45.32 and 3:41.21.

In Div 3 girls pole vault, Atascadero HS, stomping grounds of vault guru Jan Johnson, swept the top 3 places. US#1 Chelsea Johnson's 13-6 was backed up by a 12-0 and 11-6.

  • Twin power -- Winslow Twp NJ's 4x400 relay team, one of the nation's fastest (season best 3:16.4), consists of two sets of twins: Duan and Donte Freeman and Antony and Antraye Miles. (thanks to Ed Grant for this item)
  • Fort Scott KS sr Kyle Lancaster has high jumped over 7 feet four times this season, including his season best 7-2 at Pittsburg State.
  • Sandy OR jr Tommy Skipper regained the US pole vault lead and set an Oregon state record Tuesday 5/14 when he cleared 17-5 at the Mt. Hood Conference championship. Tommy jumped on a 16' 200 lb pole holding at about 15' 9", according to Oregon pole vault coach Rick Baggett.
  • Buffalo Grove IL claimed US#1 ranking in the 4x800 by running 7:46.5 in the Mid Suburban League at Hersey IL Friday 5/10.
  • Willingboro NJ jr Okechi Ogbuokiri broke the Burlington County 400 meter record twice in 14 hours in meets 315 miles apart. First, at the Southern Track Classic in Dinwiddie VA Friday night, she won in a meet record 55.38. Then, at 10:30 am Saturday, back home in New Jersey, she ran 55.26 at the Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division, at Northern Burlington HS in Mansfield, N.J.

Buffalo Grove IL 7:46.5 -- US#1 4x800

These four boys claimed US#1 ranking in the 4x800 by running 7:46.5 in the Mid Suburban League at Hersey IL Friday 5/10 with a remarkably balanced team effort. From left, with their splits: anchor Mike Deiderich 1:56.4, leadoff Larry Gokhman 1:56.8, 3rd leg David Deschamps 1:57.7, and 2nd leg Chris Mah 1:55.6.

Then, at 10:30 am Saturday, back home in New Jersey, she ran 55.26 at the Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division, at Northern Burlington HS in Mansfield, N.J.
  • Two more above 17 feet -- In Washington, Tyson Byers went 17-1 in the Greater Spokane League to take the US season lead and the Washington state #2 spot all time. In Idaho, Donovan Kilmartin got 17-0 at a cold, windy triangular meet. He also had 14.0h in 110H and 6-10 HJ. Byers and Kilmartin join Tommy Skipper as the only boys over 17 feet in pole vault this year.
  • Deerfield IL sr Erika Odlaug, still favoring tendenitis in her right foot since the World Cross Country championships in March, won the 3200m in her sectional meet in 10:48.9. "It's not excruciating pain," Odlaug said. "It's nagging and annoying, but it won't keep me from running hard." Her entries in AOC Raleigh and Jr Nationals depend on the injury rehab over the next few weeks.
  • Flathead MT freshman Zoe Nelson, a Foot Locker cross country national finalist, gets going outdoors with a 10:47.9 3200m at the Libby Invitational 5/10.
  • U. of Wyoming signee Tyg Long raised his own South Dakota state record in shot put to 65-6.5, as junior teammate Tyler Custis gave Custer SD a formidable 1-2 punch with a throw of 59-9.25.
  • Grand Island NE jr Jenny Green - 12-9 in her district meet to break the Nebraska state PV record again.
  • Two more season ending injuries: Chico CA sr Teak Wilburn (ankle), US#1 high jumper, and Willmar MN sr pole vaulter Stacie Manuel (shoulder). Manuel will undergo surgery to repair tendons in her left shoulder which started to hurt in March at the National Scholastic Indoor meet in New York, where she finished 2nd at 13-0. Both are signed for college next year, Wilburn at UC-Berkeley and Manuel at Arkansas.
  • New Jersey discus duel heats up in buildup to state meet: Bayonne sr Glenn DiGiorgio went 203-5 in the Bernards Inv 5/4 and Monmouth sr Adam Kuehl countered with 209-0 in Monmouth County meet 5/8. Observors see the state record of 216-11 set in 1996 by Ron Dayne, now a running back with the New York Giants, in jeopardy.
  • Trotter twins of Red Bank NJ go 1-2 in Monmouth County meet 1600: Amanda 4:55.61 and Katy 4:57.31.
