Texas sprinters may threaten national records
Christa Avena wins the lawsuit and the
race in Nevada
Another case of a DQ after a scratch (Sprint
star Tiandra Ponteen and Eleanor Roosevelt
HS were sidelined in Maryland this week.) had a happier
ending in Nevada, but only because a track parent is a lawyer.
A Nevada court overruled the sectional meet jury of appeals
and Bishop Gorman Las Vegas sophomore Christa Avena was
allowed to run and win the 1600 meters in the Nevada State
Meet. Rivalries between Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada
and between public schools and private schools were the
background of the dispute. Read Winners
and Losers, by Bishop Gorman coach Phil Lawton.

Sanya Richards in Pre Classic
for USA
Two pieces of good news this week for St. Thomas
Aquinas FL sprint star Sanya Richards: She
has been cleared for US citizenship and she will
run against world class athletes in the Prefontaine
Classic 400 meters this weekend. A Pre Classic news
release noted that Sanya's season best of 51.68
would have placed her third in the Portland Grand
Prix 400 last weekend, and that experts believe
she can challenge the US prep record of 50.74 set
by Monique Henderson 2 years ago. Has anyone forgotten
that the Pre Classic was the stage for Alan Webb
breaking the HS mile recored last year?

State Meet
May 17-18, 2002 - Complete
Results 5A-4A-3A-2A -
Megan Kaltenbach wins four gold medals
-- 800, 1600, 3200, and 4x800 -- in the 5A meet at
Lakewood. She got two of them on Day 1 with a 2:10.06
and 10:42.67 double within 75 minutes. With the shorter
race coming first, Kaltenbach jogged the first half
of the 3200 conservatively in 5:33 but came back with
a huge negative split of 5:09.
The tight schedule thwarted Kaltenbach's
goal of breaking Melody Fairchild's state records
(10:34.09 in the state meet and 10:21.37 all time).
"I will go after Melody's records next year,"
Kaltenbach told the Denver Post, but the quad is the
goal this year. "Nobody has ever done that in
the state meet."
Kaltenbach got the other two golds
on Saturday, anchoring Smoky Hill to a state record
9:19.09 4x800 with a "chilled" 2:13 leg,
and then returning 2.5 hours later to win the 1600
in 5:02, again with negative splits (2:36 and 2:26).

Noteworthy Notes
- Snow in May - The big Eddy Meet
at Schnectady NY was cancelled by a freak 3-hour spring
snowstorm. Meanwhile, they were a hardier sort at Hanover
NH, where a meet continued in 34 degree, snowy weather.
- Powerhouse
Eleanor Roosevelt HS and star sprinter Tiandra
Ponteen have been disqualified from the Maryland state
meet because of a late scratch by Ponteen in their regional
meet. Ponteen had been entered in the 200 and 400. She
scratched from the 200 and then ran the 400 and three
relays. But because the scratch was not made 3 days prior
to the regional meet, the 200 counted as a 5th event,
one more than the four allowed.
- Marquette MO sr Amarachi Ukabam
threw the discus 175-2 in her sectional meet. The defending
AOC champion and 3rd in World Youth games in Hungary last
year has signed to attend Ohio State next year.

There was some unusual team depth
at the California
Southern Section division finals. Poly
Long Beach girls (above, by Bill Leung)
swept the first four places in Div 1 (largest
schools) in both the 100 (11.51 to 12.01) and
200 (23.31 to 24.30) and 3-4-5 in the 800 (2:13.63
to 2:15.64). Is there any wonder that they win
almost all the relays? In this meet, they were
45.32 and 3:41.21.
In Div 3 girls pole vault, Atascadero
HS, stomping grounds of vault guru Jan Johnson,
swept the top 3 places. US#1 Chelsea Johnson's
13-6 was backed up by a 12-0 and 11-6.
