Big day for freshman girls: Chantelle Dron of Manchester Central shocks veteran 1600 meter field with 4:53.15 win; first 6 girls are under 5:00 and break old meet record. Kate Sherman of Dennis-Yarmouth doubles in 5-8 HJ (below) and 41.28 300m. US#1 miler Ari Lambie ran 5th in the mile after leading Bromfield MA to a meet record 9:18.17 4x800 with a split of 2:13.6. Boys: Xaverian MA sr Christopher Bonner, headed to Georgetown, claimed US#1 at 600 meters in 1:20.11.

Molly Huddle, Elmira NY, announced her decision - she runs for Notre Dame HS now and will run for the University of Notre Dame next year. Molly is the national indoor leader at 1500m (4:22.1), 3000m (9:31.97), and 2-Miles (10:19.8), and 5th in the mile (4:57.0). Kara Scanlin, Episcopal Jacksonville FL, cross country All-American and Florida XC record holder, will attend the University of Virginia. North Penn PA 800-meter specialist Steve Craig will attend Duke. Don't look now, but 2002 Outdoor is here - We're not ready for this (we haven't even finished the indoor championships, for crying out loud), but outdoor meets are already starting in Texas, California and Florida. How's this for an early barn burner: Evangel LA sr Jonathan Wade's 10.43 / 20.80 double at the DeSoto (TX) Classic Saturday 2/23. Edorian McCullough , 2001 Texas 5A 100 meter champion, was runner-up at 10.60. DeSoto sr Will Fitts, 800 meter runner-up to Jonathan Johnson in the Texas State Meet last year, opened with a 1:56.8 win. It is her birthday and she planned to break 1:30 for 600 meters, eliminating any ambiguity over the the US record. Livingston ran 1:30.20 December 22 vs. the listed record of 1:30.1h by Robin Campbell, Eastern Washington DC, 1974. Stacey lived up to her word: She ran 1:29.69. She now has 4 of the 5 fastest indoor 600 meter times ever in the US.

Molly Huddle 9:31.97 US#1 - Elmira NY sr Molly Huddle continues to use open races to attack the DyeStat Elite national rankings. At the Genesee Valley Harriers' Upstate Indoor Distance Festival Sunday 2/224 at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva NY, Huddle ran 3000 meters in 9:31.97 for a US season best by 24 seconds. She also heads the 2-Mile list (10:19.8) and is 3rd in the mile.

"Just a little 'ol meet at Lehigh University by the Delaware Valley Girls' Track & Field Coaches Association. And look what happened! 50 national elite performances." -

Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare dies - Dare, the Pennyslvania HS state champion in 2000 and the US junior national champion last year, fell head first into the box on a miss at 15-9 in the Big 10 championships Saturday 2/23 at the University of Minnesota and was dead on arrival at the Hennepin County hospital with head and neck injuries. A witness, Minnesota assistant coach Mario Sategna, said, "He swung upside down and sort of stalled with his jump. It looked like he became
disoriented and didn't know where he was. I believe he thought he had
cleared the bar and was on the other side of it."
