SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Here's what DyeStat will be watching
closest (all times Pacific):
W-Shot Put:
10 am. Red Oak TX jr Michelle Carter continues
her quest for the HS record (season best 53-7.75 is
only 4 inches off) and faces last year's queen, University
of North Carolina freshman Laura Gerraughty.
W-Pole Vault:
11:30 am. Same kind of matchup. This year's best, Chelsea
Johnson of Atascadero CA, whose 13-6 season
best is less than 3 inches away from the HS record,
against Lacy Janson, who had a great
freshman year at Florida State University.
100 semis:
11:35 am. Is Allyson Felix hurt?
W-100H final:
12:40pm.
M-110H final:
12:50 pm. There was no semi Friday because only 8 are
entered. Kenneth Ferguson MI tries
to start a hurdle double.
W-800 final:
1 pm. Preps were section winners: PA sr Evelyn
Dwyer 2:09.51 and California champion Jamillah
Titus 2:09.98.
M-800 final:
1:10 pm. Round 3 of Richard Smith VA
and Paul Cross FL (Smith won the first
two rounds at Nike Indoor Classic and AOC Raleigh),
with front running Will Fitts TX and
Raleigh surprise Jeremiah Johnson WY
also in the mix.
M-400H final:
1:40 pm. Another race that could flirt with the HS record;
may have first sub-50 second effort since Bob
Bornkessel's record 49.8 record at altitude
(Lake Tahoe) in 1968. Heat winners Bershawn
Jackson SC 50.33 (US#5 all time) and Kenneth
Ferguson MI 51.26 are capable, and defending
champion Dwight Ruff will push them.
Rematch of AOC Raleigh battle between Jackson and Ferguson;
Ferguson won then in 50.55 (US#9 all time) when the
speed duel got out of hand to the detriment of hurdle
rhytym, and both crashed into the next to last hurdle.
W-100 final: 5:05
pm.
M-100 final: 5:25
pm.
W-1500 final:
6:15 pm. Sensational high school underclass trio --
freshman Chantelle Dron NH, sophomore
Shannon Bergstedt MN, and junior Kristina
Smith AK -- go against college freshmen Kathryn
Andersen, Brigham Young, and Lindsey
Egerdahl, Washington.
M-1500 final:
6:25 pm. Year's best HS miler, Chris Lukezic
WA, hero of Auburn WA's national record 4x800
at AOC Raleigh last week, concentrates on the open event
this week. Main threat is Adam Perkins MO,
second in the mile last week and the fastest qualifier
here on Friday (3:52.83 in a duel with Stanford freshman
Justin Romaniuk to Lukezic's breezing 3:54.07 in the
other section).
M-5000 final:
8:40 pm.
W-3000 final:
9 pm. Laura Zeigle UT and Stanford freshman Sara Bei.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
W200 final: Sanya
Richards 23.31, Allyson Felix 23.34
as Felix, who usually glides serenely across
the finish appeared to be in some pain in the last
few meters of a side by side battle and crashed to
the track as the streaking pair lunged at the finish
line. Headwind (-3.5 mps) holds down time on this
and other sprints and hurdles.
M200 final:
Allyson's brother Wes Felix, a freshman
at University of Southern California, wins in 21.57
-4.2, with 3 preps next: Rubin Williams CA 21.61,
Ivory Williams TX 21.65, and Matt Bruno CA 21.80.
M-Pole Vault:
Tommy Skipper 17-6.5
with good tries at 18-1.5 that would have
broken Lawrence Johnson's meet record. Skipper said
the swirling winds bothered him. "I didn't feel
good at all."
M-800 pre:
AOC Raleigh leaders take top 4 spots in qualifying
for the Saturday final: Richard Smith VA
1:50.90 beats Will Fitts TX 1:51.31
in section 1 (Frank Francois, U.
Tennessee 1:51.62, Rem Moll, Missouri
1:51.92). Paul Cross FL 1:52.14 beats
Jeremiah Johnson WY 1:52.84 in section
2.
M-400H pre:
Rerun of torrid AOC Raleigh duel between Bershawn
Jackson FL and Kenneth Ferguson MI looms for
Saturday's final. After Ferguson beat defending champion
Dwight Ruff, 51.26 to 21.60, in section 1, Jackson
upped the ante by demolishing section 2 in an eased
up 50.33. That made the Miami speedster US#5 all time
in this event. Ferguson became US#9 all time last
week at Raleigh when he beat Jackson in 50.55 after
the two engaged in a reckless sprint around the last
turn and both crashed into the next to last hurdle.
W-400H pre:
University of South Carolina freshman stars dominated
the semis by winning both sections, Tiffany
Ross leading in 57.16 and world junior record
holder Lashinda Demus following in
section 2 in 56.97, both winning by more than 2 seconds.
In effect, South Carolina "won"
all four sections, as both Ferguson and Jackson
are signed to run for SC coach Curtis Frye next year.
W-100H pre: Tiffany
Ross also led the qualifiers here in 13.49
-2.7, with preps tying at 13.87 for the next two fastest
times -- AOC Raleigh champion Ashlee Williams
and Candice Davis MI.
M-1500 pre:
Auburn WA sr Chris Lukezic,
hero of his team's US record 4x800 at Raleigh last
week and the fastest prep miler of the season, won
his section easily in 3:54.07. Liberty MO jr Adam
Perkins overhauled front running Stanford freshman
Justin Romaniuk in the last strides
in a faster section, 3:52.83 to 3:52.89.
W-400 pre: High
school record holder Monique Henderson,
a freshman at UCLA, served notice she is not ready
to relinquish her prep crown without a fight as she
posted the fastest qualifying time in 53.10. This
year's prep sensation, Sanya Richards FL,
who ran 51.68 this year, was second fastest in 53.98.
W-High Jump:
Ashley Robbins TX, runner-up in Raleigh last
week, came out on top this week at 5-11.5 as Raleigh
champion Chaunte Howard went out after making 5-9.25,
more than 4 inches lower than her winning height at
Raleigh. Dos Pueblos CA sr Kaylene Wagner
got the second Team USA spot on a tie breaker
over Auburn frehman Kaylah Burks at 5-10.5.
W-Long Jump:
Plano TX sophomore Erica McLain
won a wind hampered event in 19-3.5, -2.1, with every
jumper's best mark made into a headwind.
W-800 pre: Pennsylvania
senior Evelyn Dwyer 2:09.51 won section
1 and California champion Jamillah Titus
2:09.98 section 2.
M-400 pre: Baylor
freshman star Darold Williamson 46.44
led qualifiers, with AOC Raleigh champion Ashton
Collns LA 46.72 second to him and second
fastest overall.
M-Discus: American
dependent Michael Robertson, Brussels
Belgium, who lost at Raleigh on Glenn DiGiorgio's
last throw, won this time on his last throw, 202-01.
W-Hammer: North
Carolina freshman Laura Gerraughty
192-8 was an easy winner. She will try to reign in
this year's shot put leader, Michelle
Carter TX, on Saturday.
W-1500 pre:
Startling performances by high school
undergraduates. Manchester Central NH freshman
Chantelle Dron ran with top seed Kathryn
Anderson, a freshman at Brigham Young University,
to the wire, with Anderson 4:29.02 the fastest qualifier
and Dron 4:30.92 second fastest. Anchorage AK junior
Kristina Smith continued her fine
post-season in third at 4:33.26. In the other section,
University of Washington freshman Lindsey
Egerdahl 4:33.46 needed the entire distance
to catch Hopkins MN sophomore Shannon Bergstedt
4:34.34 late.
M-10000:
Aptos CA sr Brett Gotcher 30:18.41
is third behind collegians Dan Glaz 30:12.77 and Charles
Millioen 30:15.22.
W-5000: UT sr
Laura Zeigle 16:46.32 and CA sr Clara
Horowitz 16:46.60 run 2-3 behind Purdue freshman
Lindsay Zinn 16:37.72 |
High schoolers Donovan
Kilmartin ID and Julie Pickler TX win the combined
events competition. Julie and twin sister Diana, the
2001 champion, came to the closing 800 meter race tied,
with Julie prevailing, 5,338 to 5,281. Kilmartin was
a landslide winner with 7,440 points, 748 ahead of runner-up
Robert Bates. Combined

Alan Webb turns
pro! Track writer
Chris Lear reports on the Runner's
World web site that high school mile record holder
Alan Webb will not return to the University of Michigan
for his sophomore year and will instead turn pro with
Flynn Sports Management as agent. Lear, who has been
monitoring the Michigan scene for a new book, quotes
Michigan Coach Ron Warhurst and miler Paul McMullen,
who trains with Warhurst and is also a Flynn client.
Lear also said that Webb has withdrawn from the USA
Junior Nationals at Stanford this weekend. Lear said
that Webb will enroll at George Mason University near
his Northern Virginia home and will be coached by his
South Lakes HS coach, Scott Raczko. "I really feel
the way I'm going to get better is to work with Scotty.
He's definitely the guy for me. I'm excited," Webb
is quoted as saying in the article. |
