Paul Young pulls Oxon Hill through
LANDOVER MD 2/19/02 -- Last race, Oxon hill boys ahead
of Suitland by a slim 2 points, Paul Young in third place
on the last turn behind Laurel's Emem Ifon and Suitland's
Timothy Riley. But Young (below) goes 3-wide in
the stretch to beat Suitland (red/white) and Laurel (blue)
to preserve the Maryland 4A-3A championship over Suitland,
54-48, and set off a jubilant celebration by Oxon Hill
athletes and coaches. Young was part of 32 of Oxon Hill's
points as he won the 300 in 34.81 US#9 (a 4A record and
second only to Kyle Farmer's 34.14 in 1A last year), was
4th in the 55m, and helped Oxon Hill finish 2nd to US#1
Eleanor Roosevelt in the 4x200. Ten meet records were
broken for further evidence that the new PG County Sportsplex
is changing the environment for Maryland indoor track
after years in the dark and slippery Baltimore Armory.
|
Eleanor Roosevelt won the 4A-3A
girls title for the 7th time in 8 years, 73-56 over PG
County rival Largo, despite star Tiondra Ponteen's ailing
leg. Ponteen scratched from the 300, missed the 500 (where
she is #1 in the country) because of scratching in the
regional, and was unable to hold off Largo in the 4x400.
Roosevelt is US#1 in both 4x200 and 4x400 relays. |
