Alan Webb signs
rich deal with Nike
8/15/02--USA
Today reported today that high school mile record holder
Alan Webb has signed a professional contract with Nike.
Although acknowledging that neither Nike nor Webb revealed
the details, USA Today said the contract "is believed"
to be a 6-year deal at $250,000 per year plus college costs,
plus incentives.
Just a year ago, the Reston VA runner was basking in the
glory of smashing Jim Ryun's legendary mile record with
a run of 3:53.43 at the Prefontaine Classic (below) as his
senior year was ending. Then came a troubled year at the
University of Michigan marred by injury and training issues,
after which he returned to Northern Virginia and sifted
offers from Reebok, adidas and Nike. Webb will stay in Northern
Virginia, enrolling at George Mason University and training
under his South Lakes high school coach Scott Raczko, who
reportedly gets a $25,000 annual salary from the Nike deal.
Nike announces Webb relationship
Here is the official statement of Nike:
"We are thrilled to have Alan Webb join our family
of athletes," said John Capriotti, Nike's Global Director
of Running Sports Marketing. "Nike has the largest
youth running program in the country and we know Alan will
be a great role model for young runners on and off the track.
We are looking forward to a long and successful future with
Alan representing our product and our brand."
Nike said the contract was effective immediately, but did
not disclose details.

Double Sub-50 400H recalls Bob Bornkessel
of Kansas (49.8h at Lake Tahoe in 1968)
Bob Bornkessel, of Shawnee Mission North
HS in Kansas, ran the 400 meter hurdles in 49.8h at the
Olympic training camp at Lake Tahoe CA in 1968. Until this
year no other high school runner had ever broken 50 seconds
in this demanding event. Suddenly two runners broke Bornkessel's
record in successive weeks. Kenneth Ferguson of Mumford
Detroit MI set the new record at 49.38 while running second
to Louis Van Zyl of South Africa at the World Junior Championships
in Jamaica on July 19 (with Bershawn Jackson of Miami Central
FL right behind in 50.00). Then on July 28 at the USATF
Junior Olympics in Omaha, Laporte TX jr Kerron Clement beat
Ferguson, 49.77 to 49.83. Ken Stone of masters.com

USA 38.92
the record that
almost wasn't
On July 21, 2002, at the IAAF World Junior
Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, the US team of Ashton
Collins, Wes Felix, Ivory Williams and Willie Hordge, ran
38.92 for the World Junior Record in the 4x100 meter relay.
Collins, Williams and Hordge had not planned on running at
the USATF Junior Championships (the qualifying event for the
World Junior team) until five days before the meet. And, even
if they had planned to, it is unlikely that they would have
had the means to be able to travel from Texas (Williams, Hordge)
or Louisiana (Collins) to Stanford, especially with such short
notice. How
