Great American
2002 ROC invitations
Meet director Rick Hill has invited 45 teams
to run in the Race of Champions at the 4th Great American
Cross Country Festival, to be held at Ballantyne Resort near
Charlotte NC September 27-28. Hill says ROC will have the
deepest fields in Great Am's 4 years, and the girls race will
be the deepest ever in the US. Hill projects 4000+ runners
from 200+ schools, 40 states, and 450+ teams. More
Eligibility Woes
- state associations strike hard
Moving from Grandma to Mom - In
Washington, sprint star Craig Everhart moved from his grandmother's
house, where he was a triple state champion last year for
Davis Yakima, to live with his mother and step-dad in the
Lincoln Tacoma district. After doubling 200-400 for Lincoln
last Saturday in the Pasco Inv, the WIAA said he was ineligible
because it was not a bona fide change of residence by an "entire
family unit."
Too many "outside" events - In
Alabama, distance star Tyler Stanfield was ruled ineligible
by AHSAA after he ran in three "outside" events
-- NSI New York, Auburn, and a 5k road race at Gadsden AL
-- apparently a rules violation in Alabama. The 5-time state
champion in Texas and Alabama and national Foot Locker finalist
will start training for college at Samford U., where his dad,
Ray, is the head coach.
On the other hand - Pennsylvania
reinstated Angie Saterstad on appeal after deciding that her
move to Hershey conformed to the rules. And California allows
one transfer no questions asked during an athlete's HS career.
(This results in some unusual commutes in SoCal, such as 80
miles one way to powerhouses like Poly and Wilson in Long
Beach.)
Gourley's List -
weight and hammer throw
2002 Indoor Weight
Throw - final list - Michael Freeeman RI 74'11.75" edges
Adam Hamilton NH by 3/4 inch in 25 pound list. Nick Owens
WA 55'10.50" leads 35-pound throws. Kristen Michalski RI 60'08.75"
leads girls list.
2002 Outdoor Hammer Throw
- Adam Midles WA 224'01" (12 lb) and 180'09" (16 lb) and Kristen
Michalski RI 189'00" (4k) lead first list of season.

Tubbs
out for season
Enumclaw WA sr Alison Tubbs, who was so brilliant
last year (10:11.95 3200m winning the Washington state meet
and 16:54.9 5k winning the Great American Cross Country
Festival), is finished for 2002 because of slow recovery
from a stress fracture of her right foot. "She's going
to take the season off," father-coach Tim Tubbs, who
is also the athletic director at Enumclaw, told the Seattle
Times. "She just needs to get her health back and recover
and not press her luck." Tubbs is signed to run for
the University of Washington next year.
