Eligibility Woes
- state associations strike hard
Moving from Grandma to Mom - In
Washington, sprint star Craig Everhart moved from his grandmother's
house, where he was a triple state champion last year for
Davis Yakima, to live with his mother and step-dad in the
Lincoln Tacoma district. After doubling 200-400 for Lincoln
last Saturday in the Pasco Inv, the WIAA said he was ineligible
because it was not a bona fide change of residence by an "entire
family unit."
Too many "outside" events - In
Alabama, distance star Tyler Stanfield was ruled ineligible
by AHSAA after he ran in three "outside" events
-- NSI New York, Auburn, and a 5k road race at Gadsden AL
-- apparently a rules violation in Alabama. The 5-time state
champion in Texas and Alabama and national Foot Locker finalist
will start training for college at Samford U., where his dad,
Ray, is the head coach.
Individual Gems
Natasha Roetter MA sr - 27:43 for 5 miles, a 5:33 pace,
in a road race in her home town of Lexington MA, finishing
10th and the first woman. Evidently, the longer the distance,
the better Roetter likes it.
Melanie Uher NE jr - It was windy, but . . . it was
stupendous -- a discus throw of 185-4 at the Dewitt Tri-County
Inv 4/16. The Omaha World-Herald (www.omaha.com)
reported that the wind was gusting to 40 miles per hour and
it took extra help to hold down the tape measure. All of Uher's
throws were over 170 feet; she won the Nebraska Class C championship
last year at 142-0. The big throw is fourth best all time
in the US.
Tyg Long SD sr - 64-7 shot put for a South Dakota state
record. Added 179-10 DT. Custer senior was an early signee
at Wyoming.
Toni Smith CO jr - 40-4.75 TJ for a new Colorado state
record at the Mullen Inv. She's aiming for 41 feet by end
of season.
Ray Williams NJ sr - has people comparing him to Olympic
predecessors in NJ after his 45.9 split brought his team from
4th to 1st in the DMR at the Summit Relays. New Jersey guru
Ed Grant says the only other prep sub-46 split in NJ was by
the great Renaldo Nehemiah. State HS record of 46.02 (Dennis
Mitchell, 1984) may be in Williams' sights.
Boys & Girls HS NY - ran 1-2
in the Kings Relays 4x400 at Van Cortlandt Park, NYC, with
both teams under 3:50. B&G's A team ran 3:46.7 and the
B team 3:49.2.
Kelli Burton UT sr -
49-1 and 153-11 SP/DT at Davis Inv. Shot is all-time best
in Utah.
Molly Huddle NY sr
- 4:31.6 / 9:36.7 double at 1500/3000 at Lansing NY Inv.
Sanya Richards FL sr - 51.68 at U. of Miami Gatorade
Classic against college and open runners makes Richards the
6th fastest US prep ever at 400m. Sanya's freshman teammate
Jenna Utecht at St. Thomas Aquinas FL ran 14.23 +0.7
for 7th in the 100H.
Stacy Boerema IA sr - Clinton IA senior high jumps
6-0 at Jesse Day Relays in Davenport.

Some Individual Gems
PA McDowell
sr Ryan Sherwood, opened his 2002 campaign with a throw
of 229-1 at Slippery Rock, only 9 inches off his US#1 mark
in 2001.
TX Splendora
sr Brian Robison had a monster DT series in his district
meet: 204' 7", 206' 2", 215' 2 1/4", 203' 8",
202' 3", 203' 2". And his shot wasn't bad either:
63-7.5.
OR Sandy jr
Tommy Skipper 17-0.25 PV
in his home track Sandy Relays. Skipper got
it on his third try and wobbled the bar on his way down. "I
didn't think I made it. It was a pretty sketchy jump,"
Skipper told The Oregonian newspaper.
CO Smoky Hill jr Megan
Kaltenbach 4:56.31 1600 meters at 6500 feet altitude in
the Pikes Peak Invitational. Kaltenbach is headed to Arcadia
next Saturday.
CA Bakersfield sr Rachel
Varner 178-0 DT and 48-02.5 SP at Fresno Relays 4/6. Discus
is US#10 all time. Varner heads to Arcadia this weekend for
a rematch with Arroyo Grande jr Billie Jo Grant, who
threw 175-3 US#15 all time in the same meet.
NJ track
writer Ed Grant reports that Tawana Watkins, defending
national champion in the 400 hurdles, may be out for the season
with a back injury. "It could be a stress fracture,"
Grant said. "She will certainly miss the first month
of the season, which means missing Penn for the 2nd year in
a row. There is just a chance that she will return in time
for our state meet, but, since that begins May
25, a better chance that she will be at Raleigh."
