Factoid of the day: Alan Webb is the only non-African in the world junior 1500 meter top 10 in 2001. Webb's American record 3:38.26 (en route to his American record high school mile at the Prefontaine Classic) places 5th in the 2001world junior list.

Indoor 2002 - first results

Bishop Loughlin Games - Here we go again! All time ranking performances, meet records, and New York Armory records all over the place as record 5,500 athletes compete - Shana Cox 38.00 300m US#3 all time; Stacey Livingston 2:50.37 1000m, US#8 all time; Boys & Girls girls 3:49.97; Mike Morrison 7-1; I-Perfection Harris 24-0.5 and 46-4; Marc Pelerin 4:15.16 mile (right); Shenae Dawkins 8.07 55H and 39-11.25 TJ. Complete results, 45 action photos, and Donna on the Side.
Foraging through Jack Shepard's indispensable "High School Track" uncovered three more performances worthy of all time ranking:
- Mike Morrison, 7-1 is new indoor HJ record for a junior.
- Jade Smith, Camden, 33.79 300m is US#8 all time
- Che Chavez, Poly Prep, 34.03 300m is US#14 all time

Friends of Indoor Track (FIT) relays - George Mason U., Fairfax VA - Bonnie Meekins 5-8, Eleanor Roosevelt girls 3:52.3; David Sullivan 15-6.

We've been trying to ignore it, hoping for a brief intermission between seasons, but the 2002 indoor season has arrived. Just one week after Foot Locker Cross Country finals at Disney World, we start our Amtrak season by going up to New York for the Bishop Loughlin Games at the revived New York Armory, 168th and Broadway, the leading venue in the country for indoor track. In addition to 85 high school meets, the Armory will host the biggest college meet of the season February 8-9 and the USA Nationals March 1-2 (returning to the Big Apple after 8 years at the Georgia Dome). All this on top of non-stop renovations to remake the old building into the US Track and Field Hall of Fame (moving from Indianapolis).

  • BOYS RACE: A Battle for the Ages: Moore Nips Lockhart
Tim Moore MI 14:50.4 - Exactly as expected, 10-12 boys had a shot at the title through 2 tightly contested miles in 9:32. Moore and Bobby Lockhart moved into the stretch as a team with first one, then the other getting the call, and Moore getting the last call by 1.1 second, closest Foot Locker finish ever. Another 1.4 second back was fast finishing Chris Solinsky WI. Then came three more runners under 15:00 -- Nurani Sheikh UT 14:56.5, Tim Ross MI 14:57.9, and Milos Mitric NC 14:59.2. The Midwest team edged the West 38-42 with South 52 and Northeast 87. Complete Boys Results
  • GIRLS RACE: Queen Amber Reigns Supreme
Amber Trotter CA 16:24 - Any hopes Amber Trotter would get a challenge were dashed quickly as the Ukiah CA senior made this just like every other race in her storybook year. Out on top in the first strides, first mile in 5:04 with a 20 second lead that lengthened to 30 seconds after 2 miles and an incredible 40 seconds at the finish. She took 31 seconds off the OakTrails course record set by Sara Bei last year, 15 seconds off Melody Fairchild's meet record (1990 in San Diego), and the second largest margin in meet history. The Fox TV lead cart let her go in the first mile and moved back to the chase pack so that someone other than Trotter would appear in the race film. The stretch battle was for second, as Erika Odlaug IL just caught Natasha Roetter MA after a long hard drive, 17:04.3 to 17:05.1. The West girls won again in a rout with 33 points, Northeast 61, Midwest 71, and South 73. Complete Girls Results
  • GALLERY OF FINALISTS - photos, quotes, and past performances for all 80 finalists and alternates.
  • Hawaii Connection - Amber Trotter's victory continues an interesting string: she is the third straight Foot Locker girls champion to have won the 3-year-old Iolani Invitational during the season. In 1999, Hawaii native Victoria Chang won the inaugural Iolani meet and then came to the mainland to win the Foot Locker national finals. Last year, Sara Bei of California took the trip to Hawaii, won the Iolani Inv and went on to an "upset" victory in Orlando. This year, Trotter ventured to the Iolani meet September 22 at Kualoa Ranch (site of filming of Jurassic Park) and signalled she was ready for Foot Locker glory by beating Bei's 2000 time by 22 seconds. The Aloha charm worked again. Is anyone thinking Hawaii for next September?

This is the 7th "Performance Stretch of the Week" provided by StretchRite, Inc. The series is designed by exercise physiologist Scott Powers, inventor of the StretchRite stretch trainer. "The focus of stretching now is to run faster and jump higher, not just prevent injuries. We see so many athletes neglect their flexibility program which translates into tight muscles. A tight muscle will have a limited range of motion and definitely slows the runner," Powers says.
