California State Finals
The deepest high school track state of them all stages its annual one-class, 27 athletes per event showdown this weekend in Sacramento. John Dye's preview tabs the clear favorites and the dog fights, some of which could threaten national records. There were 386 performances in the 10 section finals that met DyeStat Elite cutoffs. DyeStat will be on-site Friday and Saturday June 1-2 for complete coverage, including results, photos, interviews, and Donna on the Side. California State Meet page
Quotes from the Sacramento Bee Friday:
Ryan Hall: "My legs are feeling good, and I think something amazing is going to happen. I know I can run fast. I don't just want to go under four. I want to go significantly under four." (for 1600 meters)
Karen Freberg: "I'm looking forward to some competition. The national record would be great." (Karen came within 1/4 inch of the national shot put record in a dual meet and has been untested this year.)
Lashinda Demus: "I ran out of anger. I really wanted to win state in the 300 hurdles." (After breaking the national record in 300 meter hurdles twice in 3 weeks, Demus flubbed the first two hurdles and DNF's in the Southern Section section finals last week, so she will have to settle for the 100 hurdles and 4x400 relay at Sacramento. Last week, her angry 50.9 split propelled Wilson Long Beach to a 3:37.48 4x400, US#1 this season and US#4 all time. Wilson now has the four fastest 4-lap relays ever recorded in the US.)

Ritz Reacts to Webb's historic mile like anyone else. Prep distance running's other superstar, Dathan Ritzenhein, was on the edge of his seat and stunned as Alan Webb mowed down world class milers on the last lap at the Prefontaine Classic last Sunday. The Rockford MI senior is happy for his good friend Webb, but is now ready to take on his own record quest -- Jeff Nelson's 8:36.3 for two miles, a 1979 record that is nearly as legendary as the Jim Ryun record that Webb broke last Sunday -- at the adidas Outdoor Championship at Raleigh June 15-16. Ritz tells Steve Underwood what he's been doing lately.
Jeff Nelson's 2-mile record -
"I have had my eye on that for 2 years and I really want it." - Ritzenhein

Webb will run 800 at the Virginia AAA state meet this weekend in Richmond. In grave peril is Sharif Karie's Virginia record of 1:49.61. The national record (1:46.45 Michael Granville 1996) seems out of reach, but at this point would anyone put limits on Webb's reach? Pearl Watts previews the meet.

DyeStat Elite lists pass 3,000
DyeStat Elite top 100 USA rankings as of 5/22

We are still catching up on the flood of top performances and there are gaps to be filled, but we added 700 more performances in the past week. The lists now top 3,000 out of a 2001 outdoor database of 4,521 performances from 655 meets (generally only the best performance of an athlete in each event is ranked).

Some observations about this week's lists:

  • Texas dominates boys 4x100 -- 20 of the top 21 ranked teams are from the Lone Star state.
  • SoCal girls dominate sprint relays -- the metro Los Angeles powerhouse trio of Wilson Long Beach, Poly Long Beach and North, Riverside are 1-2-3 in the 4x100 and 1-2-6 in the 4x200, showing their great depth and constant rejuvenation with young talent.
  • Arcadia boys mile was one hot race -- The top 7 at the Arcadia Invitational are also the top 7 in the US, with Alan Webb, Ryan Hall, and the Jeffersons featured.
  • Jumps are jumping this year -- some indicators:
    • Boys high jump -- 14 over 7 feet
    • Boys long jump -- 4 over 25 feet
    • Boys triple jump -- 7 over 50 feet
    • Girls high jump -- 10 at 5-10 or 5-11
    • Girls long jump -- 45 over 19 feet
    • Girls triple jump -- 17 over 40 feet
    • Girls pole vault -- 21 over 12 feet

STATUS of DyeStat - The demise of the Rivals network does NOT threaten the future of DyeStat, but it is causing us extra administrative work as we re-establish an independent web hosting environment, so some functions will be delayed through the rest of April.  Here are our near term priorities:
(1) Current on-site coverage,
(2) DyeStat Elite national rankings,
(3) Other current news around the country,
(4) New message board (to replace the Rivals board), - DONE
(5) Backfilling pages from the past year to the new server, - DONE
(6) Integrating all of the content of DyeStat for the past 5 years on the new server in a single menu interface.

Please keep these priorities in mind as you view DyeStat in this transition period.
