Week of
September 10th-15th, 2007 The leader of one of the nation's hottest teams, Saugus HS, is our Female DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week, with Saugus High senior Katie Dunn charging out in front of her Centurion squad in super style so far. A 10:45.93 3200 runner from the 2007 spring track and field season has put in an intense summer of training and has the "take no prisoners" attitude heading into this fall. At last week's Seaside Invitational in Ventura, a flat, concrete three mile venue, she blazed a 16:58 clocking, which is one of the fastest prep performances you will certainly see across the nation for the three mile this season. Katie took the time from her busy start of school and running schedule to answer a few questions for us about her running and school's well thought out program. DyeStatCal - Super sub 17 minute
run at Seaside in Ventura this past week at 16:58. Last
year you ran 17:42 there. What were your goals for this year's
race and how did you feel coming in? DSC - You were pretty much out
there by yourself the entire race at Seaside,
winning by over a minute, and there was a bicycle lead vehicle
who seemed to
stay pretty close (imagine they may have had incidents with lead
runners in
past), but what was the race like being out there that far in front
and what
were your thoughts and plans in pushing yourself during the actual
event? DSC - We talked to you in mid-August
and you talked about the intensity of your
practices during the summer. With the side issues of heat and the
start of
school recently have you felt pretty consistently challenged during
the
training process? DSC - If okay with Coach, what generally did you
do for practices the
Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday before the Friday Seaside sub
17 minute three mile
performance? DSC - The team seems to be developing
nicely behind you, and what has been the
sense of momentum that the group has had during the summer
and early fall
season? DSC - Everybody has an injury or
two along the way, with we recall you affected
for a time, what was that problem, what have you done to assure
it will not
happen again, and what is your general health at this time? DSC - Care to share any goals that
you have for yourself or the team for this
year, fall and spring? DSC - As a senior what have been
your general thoughts on college, do you have
a general level of school in mind, distance from home considered,
and
possible course of study in mind yet? DSC - Few quick questions: DSC - What can we find you doing
when you are not studying or working out
(hobby or hobbies)? DSC - Store we could find you in if you had some
extra money to spend? DSC - Your biggest rival(s)? DSC - Favorite kind of cross-country workout? DSC - Least favorite kind of cross-country workout? DSC - Any pre-race or meet-day rituals or clothing/uniform
traditions? DSC - Any sport you really invested
some time in growing up but realized you
might want to go another direction with sporting efforts? DSC - Where can we find you and what will you be
doing in ten years? With her team starting the year in eleventh in the National rankings in the sport Katie certainly has a supportive crew along for training, with the squad ranked second in the most recent overall California listing in the sport. Our wish certainly is for continued good health for the Magic Mountain area star as we move past the half-way point of the first month of a year that should have her racing into December.
