Katie Dunn (Saugus)

The leader of one of the nation's hottest teams, Saugus HS, is our Female DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week, with Saugus High senior Katie Dunn charging out in front of her Centurion squad in super style so far.  A 10:45.93 3200 runner from the 2007 spring track and field season has put in an intense summer of training and has the "take no prisoners" attitude heading into this fall.  At last week's Seaside Invitational in Ventura, a flat, concrete three mile venue, she blazed a 16:58 clocking, which is one of the fastest prep performances you will certainly see across the nation for the three mile this season.  Katie took the time from her busy start of school and running schedule to answer a few questions for us about her running and school's well thought out program.

DyeStatCal - Super sub 17 minute run at Seaside in Ventura this past week at 16:58. Last year you ran 17:42 there. What were your goals for this year's race and how did you feel coming in?
KD - I was ready for our first race at Seaside. I have put in a great amount of difficult training and I prepared myself mentally. My coach had told me exactly what I needed to do in order to break 17 minutes on the course so I guess I just focused on my splits and gave it my all.

DSC - You were pretty much out there by yourself the entire race at Seaside, winning by over a minute, and there was a bicycle lead vehicle who seemed to stay pretty close (imagine they may have had incidents with lead runners in past), but what was the race like being out there that far in front and what were your thoughts and plans in pushing yourself during the actual event?
KD - When you're alone in a race you just can't think about it. You have to keep pushing yourself. That is what I focus on,I try to not think so much about any pain or how far someone is away from me. I just try to maintain my own pace or pick it up if I am behind.

DSC - We talked to you in mid-August and you talked about the intensity of your practices during the summer. With the side issues of heat and the start of school recently have you felt pretty consistently challenged during the training process?
KD - It has been a challenge training as hard as we did during summer, due to the heat we do our best to keep it consistent. After all we run in all kinds of different weather.

DSC - If okay with Coach, what generally did you do for practices the Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday before the Friday Seaside sub 17 minute three mile performance?
KD - On Monday I did 18x hill repeats,Tuesday 72-minutes with the boys plus strides, Wednesday was a 20-minute track tempo at 6:16 pace followed by 6x200m at 36. Then Thursday it was 6 miles easy plus strides.

DSC - The team seems to be developing nicely behind you, and what has been the sense of momentum that the group has had during the summer and early fall season?
KD - We have been preparing to defend our State title and have been training harder then ever before because we all know how tough the competition is.

DSC - Everybody has an injury or two along the way, with we recall you affected for a time, what was that problem, what have you done to assure it will not happen again, and what is your general health at this time?
KD - I am always in pain with knee or hip problems, I basically try to not let it get to me. I do not like thinking about it. I get told before my races that I have to find my special place where I run in a zen like form. To help my pain I ice when I need to and go to my chiropractor once a week.

DSC - Care to share any goals that you have for yourself or the team for this year, fall and spring?
KD - My goals for this year is to P.R on all of my times. Our team goals are to repeat what we did last year just with faster times.

DSC - As a senior what have been your general thoughts on college, do you have a general level of school in mind, distance from home considered, and possible course of study in mind yet?
KD - I would like to go to a Div. 1 school, and I am not too sure if I want to go far away. It will depend on what offers I receive and if I go to a 2-year school first. I have been looking at Sports Medicine or Physical Therapy.

DSC - Few quick questions:

DSC - What can we find you doing when you are not studying or working out (hobby or hobbies)?
KD - My life is basically running and school. It takes up a lot of my time. I also work but when I am not doing any of those things I am hanging with friends or sleeping.

DSC - Store we could find you in if you had some extra money to spend?
KD - Target is where I shop the most or I go to Front Runners for Women.

DSC - Your biggest rival(s)?
KD - My own teammates are my biggest rivals.

DSC - Favorite kind of cross-country workout?
KD - My favorite cross country workouts would have to be the steady states.

DSC - Least favorite kind of cross-country workout?
KD - My least favorite workout would have to be any of the track workouts we do. I love going the distance and the longer training.

DSC - Any pre-race or meet-day rituals or clothing/uniform traditions?
KD - I usually have Subway and Jamba Juice and I wear the same race socks.

DSC - Any sport you really invested some time in growing up but realized you might want to go another direction with sporting efforts?
KD - I have been doing softball and running since I was 8 years old, I have also done other sports but it all has led down to running.

DSC - Where can we find you and what will you be doing in ten years?
KD - I do not know where exactly I will be, but I do know I will continue running and be looking into sports medicine.

With her team starting the year in eleventh in the National rankings in the sport Katie certainly has a supportive crew along for training, with the squad ranked second in the most recent overall California listing in the sport.  Our wish certainly is for continued good health for the Magic Mountain area star as we move past the half-way point of the first month of a year that should have her racing into December.

Best of Luck
