Ellie Keene (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista)!

One of the real pleasant surprises this fall season has been the running of San Diego Section star Ellie Keene of Rancho Buena Vista (Vista), an eleventh grader.  From fourth in the San Diego Section I Finals last Fall in Cross Counry, and an 11:07.32 3200 during track for third in the San Diego area, she has accelerated her successes this fall, with a culmination a fine second behind Jordan Hasay in the recent Mt. SAC Invitational Individual Sweeps race in a 17:25.  She will be part of a very strong group of Division I runners come the area Section affair and at the Thanksgiving-time State Meet!!

Congrats and best of luck!!!

1) Briefly describe how your Invitational season has gone so far this year?

So far my season is moving in the direction I had hoped for. All of the big races, Woodbridge, Stanford, and Mt. Sac, have been great preparation for the rest of the season. I am happy with the results and I feel that I have become a smarter runner from these races.

2) What were your personal accomplishments over the last couple of years in cross-country and track and field?

Qualifying for state in cross country and track was the highlight of my sophomore year. Other than that just learning more about the sport and reaching the goals I have set for myself have been my personal achievements.

3) What other sports have you done while growing up or at RBV High?

While growing up I played soccer for eight years. I just started running as a freshman and after that I stopped playing soccer.

4) How much running did you do this past summer?

This past summer I put in about 400 miles. Most of my runs at a steady pace, with some faster and longer runs mixed in.

5) About how many miles per week are you running during the current season? (any two a day workouts?)

Currently I am running about 35-40 miles a week.

6) What is your favorite kind of cross-country workout as far as getting you ready for a good race in the sport?

For race preparation I like tempo runs. We do a 5-6 mile run with the last 2-3 miles at a hard pace. Both mentally and physically this type of training gives you confidence for races.

7) What appeals to you more, the sport of cross-country up and down the hills or track and field with the competitions around the track?

I love to run cross country more just because it's so unpredictable, but I love the excitement and thrill of track meets too.

8) Who has been big influence(s) to you as you have grown up as an athlete?

Certainly my coach Tom Lux, has been a major influence on me as a runner. I appreciate so much his knowlege of the sport and the guidance he gives our team. My parents are also very supportive.

9) What are some of your goals for the rest of the fall and school year in the sports?

My goals for the end of the season are to finish strong and run well at the remaining important meets. I want to win a San Diego Section Title and place in the top 5 at state for both track and cross country.

10) some quick answers:

--favorite TV show?
Project Runway

--last book or magazine you read outside of a school assignment?
Newsweek

--favorite store where we could find you in some spare time?
Jamba Juice or Barnes and Noble

--in ten years we will find you--------------?
Most likely running and working in somewhere in the medical field.
