Jordan rolls along in her season opener at Morro Bay

An age-group legend, no runner in recent years has had the anticipated first year as a prep as did Jordan Hasay (Mission College Prep of San Luis Obispo).  A magical fall season had her emerge as the National individual champion in the sport, with a track season that included a State 3200m championship run and US Junior (under age 20) National Championship over the 3000m distance!  Into her soph year after what appears to be a solid summer of preparation, Jordan and Coach Armando Siqueiros turned her loose at the Morro Bay Invitational in early September, with the tenth grade charge racing away to a two minute 16:24 win over a 2.7 mile course.  For that dominating performance she is our DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week, with we are sure some super results during the weeks that remain in the season through December.

1) Sounded like a good summer - what percent stronger do you feel early in your 2006 season than maybe at the start of your 2005 fall cross-country season?
I’m not sure if I can put it into percentage terms, but I can say that I feel stronger than at the start of last year’s 2005 season.

2) How different does it feel at this time of year compared to last, where at that time you were an age-group athlete who had known some success at that level, with this year you return with a solid year of high school running under your belt?
I feel more confident. Last year, I really didn’t know what to expect at the high school level. But now, having a year’s experience has helped me. I know what to expect this year and can better plan and prepare for races. Also, my Coach Dr. Armando Siquieros has great plans for me. He has helped me adjust my training routine to best suit my needs, goals to work towards, and to help me learn my bodies capabilities.

3) Are your "during season" workouts this fall period a bit more in quantity and quality than last year at this time?
Because it is such a long season, we’re still in the quantity part of training. (60 miles a week). That will soon change however with less mileage, but more intensity. We're hoping this year that with more base mileage, I'll be able to peak better as we can cut away the miles gradually, but still be running a decent amount.

4) How did you approach the Morro Bay meet, and describe how that race went for you (understand it featured a strong, planned finish)?
Yes, I approached the meet like a training run. My plan was to run the first two miles at a controlled, steady pace, then finish the last mile or so at a fast pace. I hit the mile mark at 6:05 and finished the last 1200M in about 3:29. I was a happy with the end result.

5) Most everyone has a favorite loop right out the front door from home--what is yours if you have one, how far and how many hills does it include?
Yes, my favorite course is right outside my house! I start and end at home running through various neighborhoods. I have a four, six, and seven mile course that I run depending on how far I'm going that day. Each course includes rolling hills, and flat terrain. There are two very steep hills each approximately a half-mile long. I think these hills really help me to develop my strength There are side horse trails along the course which allows me to run on dirt rather than asphalt. We also live right near a park which is great for me to do strides after an easy day.

6) Understand the next big race is Clovis Invitational. What did you learn from running that course last year the times that you did?
Yes, we’re looking at the Clovis race as the start of my season. The first time I ran the course (Clovis Invitiational last year) I didn't really know what to expect. But as always, the second time (Central Section final) and third time (State finals) I ran the course, I knew the course and how to run it, so I my times were better. I'm excited for this year's race.

7) A couple of "quick answers:"

--last movie you saw?
In theatres, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, on my portable DVD player, Chariots of Fire

--the TV show you cannot miss?
