Michael Cybulski rolls to a 15:03 win in
last
weekend's Clovis Invitational
Another California athlete who has accomplished a ton prior
to the start of his senior year, Michael Cybulski (Royal, Simi Valley) seems
poised to help take his team to another glory strewn end to the fall harrier
season. Third
in the State Divison I race last year at state in the Fall, leading his team
to an impressive 78:11 win at Woodward Park, Michael went on to a State 3200
track title over 3200m at 8:53.77. He has had some fine races this
fall at Woodbridge and Stanford, with a super 15:03 win this past weekend
in the Clovis Invitational, the third fastest time ever run at that competition
this early in the year! One of a ton of Golden State stars this fall,
we are sure the individual and team headlines are far from over with two
full months of racing ahead for this week's DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week.
Congrats and best of luck!!!

1) Briefly summarize your individual and team season so far
this fall--
So far I’m pretty happy with my individual season. Haven’t set any
real goals for the beginning of the season. I’m usually always looking
forward to the end of the season when it counts the most. Team wise it has gone
pretty well. We wanted to break the Woodbridge course record again to see where
our team was at this year compared to last year. Even though we lost Stanford,
it’s always good to remember, “Good things come slow-especially in
distance running.”
2) What do you think there was about the evening at Woodbridge that made the
times overall so special there?
Asphalt, the crowed, and racing under the lights. Also the competition keeps
getting better and better every year. When I ran there as a sophomore 15:25 got
me 25th, this year it would have gotten me 65th.
3) What did you and the team learn from your run at Stanford?
Every point counts. It doesn’t matter if you are the 1st, 3rd, or 7th runner
on your team. If you are the 6th and 7th runner on any team you should ALWAYS
be trying to displace other runners…except if they are from Royal
4) How much running did you do this summer to prepare for your senior year?
This year I really didn’t put in as much miles as I would have liked to.
Hudson and I got a late start in our training because of NON. We were about 4 ½ weeks
behind on our training and by the end of summer we were about 150 miles short
from our goal. One thing that I did different this year to prepare myself for
my senior year was running all of my hilly runs (which is pretty much every run)
under 7 min pace and the flat runs 6:10-6:15.
5) What areas of your training and racing did you look to adjusting or working
on in particular as you head towards your senior year?
The only real adjustment that we have made to our workouts was early on this
season we were slowly getting into a hill we call “Poop Out.” In
the previous years we would do 20 right from the start, but this year we started
at 12, then 16, then 20. I’d say we are doing them a lot more than previous
years. For racing I haven’t made any real adjustments to prepare myself.
We all have faith in our coach that he will get us ready for when we need to
be.
6) What is your favorite cross-country workout as far as getting your ready for
good races?
20x300s on the grass at 51/52 pace for all the odds and 48/49 for all the evens.
Then 2x1600 repeats on the track at 4:35-4:40 pace with a 5 min rest in between.
7) What do you like more, cross-country or track?
Cross Country because of the team unity.
8) What do you think your interests are career-wise after college?
Haven’t really thought about it.
9) Some quick answers:
--last movie you saw
The Notebook. I cried twice…jk
But seriously…
--last book you read (outside of assigned school) or favorite magazine?
Bowerman And The Men of Oregon
--favorite dinner
Chicken Alfredo
--favorite dessert
Cannolis
