Joe Hartman catches Alex Kosinski leading
the State 1600 at Cerritos last June

While doing a bit of research about who would appear to be matching up the first weekend of September action in the Golden State, it looked like a great race could be brewing at the Granite Bay Invitational in the Sac Joaquin section, with Marie Lawrence (Reno, Nevada) coming over last year, and fellow National individual cross-country champ finalist, Alex Kosinski (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills), also entered last year.  The duo certainly help to make up "the best of the best" across the nation for the coming year, with Lawrence second to Jordan Hasay in the Foot Locker National title run in the fall, setting a National Prep record in the steeplechase this spring, and recently returning from the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Bejing, China, where she was a finalist in the barrier and water jump event.  Kosinski was part of a great group of California 1600 stars this spring, ending up the nation's #5 1600-miler with her 4:42.93 mile best from June of this past year.  Alex was 20th in the December Foot Locker CC title run, and is among the top dozen returnees nationally from that affair.

Joe Hartman pointed out that Alex Kosinski had suffered an injury in August, and would probably be out for a time, and after we figured that Marie Lawrence would definitely be coming over or the GB affair, there went our big opening season match-up, with the ones a couple months down the road the bigger ones anyway.  Obvious concern was over the severity of Alex's injury, with her report below showing care on the very conservative side, which usually involves the quickest return possible to 100% status.  As perhaps the nation's most improved runner over the last couple of years the Sac Joaquin star below gives some details of her problem, and we look forward to seeing her back out on the course soon!

Alex: "About 4 weeks ago I injured my foot. My doctor took an MRI and a x-ray, but they didn't show anything. He assumed it was a very minor stress fracture in my foot. I have been cross training, and things have been going very well. We are going to be on the conservative side when it comes to my return, and I'm looking forward to running again and the upcoming cross country season. Thanks a lot for your concern."
