Steven Crum (Santiago, Corona)
Inland Empire Star quick on Summer Roads
15:30 at Baldwin Park "Pride of the Valley" contest!

One of the state's top athletes out "on the roads" this summer has been junior Steven Crum from Santiago in Corona, with the eleventh grader racing 15:30 at the recent Baldwin Park "Pride of the Valley," where he was the first prep runner and had the quickest time in the state or a 5k during this warm period of the year.

1) What were your best times this past Cross-Country and Track and Field Seasons?

1. Well, last cross-country season I had ran a 15:30 at the Danna Hills invite, which had got me a school record. I had also ran numerous other cross-country races at, below, or around the 16 minute mark. During my last track season I hadn’t picked up the pace till the very end where I had ran a 9:49 solo at league finals.

2) What has your general training plan been like this summer?

2. Very rigorous, while still keeping in mind that the season hasn’t begun yet. Much of my training consists of morning and night workouts, or long runs up into the local Cleveland National Forest. What I am most concentrated on now is mileage, the intensity will come later on in the season.

3) What general area of your running were you working on improving this summer?

3. I’ve been working on hills to further improve my cross-country racing. I’ve been also participating in a few road races to improve pacing and other racing strategies.

4) What allowances have you had to make for the heat conditions in your Corona area this summer, and what advice could you give others who face the same conditions?

4. The heat in the inland area is very hard to deal with. I try to run in the morning hours and in the late evening or night. Sometimes even in the early morning it can almost be too hot to handle. I’m just glad that the July heat wave is over with. I would advise fellow runners to hydrate, and run in cooler parts of the day to avoid serious heath complications.

5) What are some of your goals for the coming Fall Cross Country season?

5. I hope to accomplish a lot this upcoming cross-country season. Since the end of the track season I’ve been making large improvements. One goal I should accomplish is league champ, which hasn’t been accomplished at my school for years. I hope to break 14:50 at the Danna Hills invite. I also hope to place well at the state meet, and be the first member in my team to even go to state.

Some running math (by Steve)

Baldwin Park 5K = 16:31 (2005) X 15:30 (2006) = DH = 991 X 930 = DH872.75 = -->
Danna Hills 15:30 (2005) DH (2006) 930 DH

872.75 / 60 = 14 minutes 32.7 seconds
