Andrew Welch, of the running family of Welschs, has just finished his cross country high school career at Castro Valley. After a year-and-a-half of rehabilitation and multiple surgeries following a catastrophic car accident, Andrew was able to resume running just 6 weeks ago. He transfered to Castro Valley High last year from Redwood Christian. HIs doctor finally gave him medical clearance in October, and he ran his first race October 13. Andrew finished 3rd in the JV race that day.

One month later, Andrew was the Hayward Area Athletic League JV champion at 10:40 for 2.0 miles. As an alternate at the NCS Championships, he was called into emergency duty due to an injury and responded with an unexpected 16:35 for 3.0 miles. He was 4th for Castro Valley and a key factor in getting the team into the 3rd and final qualifying spot in NCS D-I for the State Meet.

He capped the season with a 17:16 in the D-I race at State, 6th for the team, and part of the 15th place team. This was a remarkable achievement for a truncated season by an athlete carrying 4 pounds of titanium rods in his back to support his broken spine.
