The Venue Cup is a cross country award that rewards consist performance. Involving the Morro Bay Invitational, the Ojai Invitational and the Blue Lagoon Invitational, individuals are required to compete in a minimum of 2 of the 3 meets in order to be considered for an award. A runner¹s top two finish times at this races are combined in order to determine placing.

Presently, in the freshmen boys, Michael Barnes of Ventura is the leader. Winning the junior varsity race at Morro Bay in 16:29, along with being the first freshmen and the Division I and II race at the Ojai in 17:23 puts Michael in first place with an average time of 16:56 for the two races.

With one race to go at the sometimes fast Lagoon course of UCSB, a number of people are still in the hunt. Defending champion, Michael Coe of Cabrillo turned in a fine 16:05 performance at the Ojai and has the opportunity to run fast at the Lagoon. Joaquin Gomez of Carpinteria won the Ojai in 15:45 and will be entering his second Venue Cup race at the Lagoon while the Ventura duo of Chris Gurney and Taylor Garrett were both sub 15:30 at Morro Bay and could challenge for the lead at the Lagoon. Making for a very heated race up top, Nathan Longerier of Centennial of Bakersfield should be with the leaders off of his 15:24 performance at Morro Bay.

As with the freshmen group, there are a number of runners ready to go after the overall lead with a fast second race at the Lagoon. Jessica Bryant, Tara Bryant and Edna Solano of Ventura plus Lynette Barnett of Centennial High School all broke 19 minutes at Morro Bay and should be in the front back at the Lagoon. Outside the senior class, sophomore Molly Bailey of Ventura won the Morro Bay Invitational in 17:48. Teammate Becky Brinkenhoff won the JV race there in 18:41. Throw in Ojai Division III, IV and V champion, Audrey Barrett and the Fabing twins from the fine Lompoc program and things could get really exciting on the narrow UCSB trails. All makes for an exciting conclusion to this year¹s version of the Venue Cup. A special thanks to Joe Rubio and Venue Sports for the continued support in helping to develop our fine sport.
