Mt. SAC Invitational - 1994

Julia Stamps (Santa Rosa) takes the 17 minute barrier!!

1994 Mt. SAC Invitational – Julia Stamps Day at the Course!!!

Ten years ago at the Mt. SAC Invitational, Santa Rosa HS’s Julia Stamps was the story, with the tenth grader blasting the all-time Course Record of 17:15 by Milena Glusac of Fallbrook from 1992 by quite a bit!! Some good Friday smaller schools action led into Saturday’s larger school contests, with the usual Sweeps action featuring better teams and individuals!

Friday’s action was highlighted by the running of the latest Garritson family star, with frosh Heather Garritson (Buena Park) blazing the #3 frosh time ever on the old course with a 17:49 Div III Sweeps win, with Clayton Valley (Concord) emerging a fine Girls team winner with 63 points and a fine 95:58 team time, the fastest ever from the outside Los Angeles area (and the weekend’s fastest overall). Livermore, led by the fine 1-2 sweep of Steve Immel (15:27) and Micheil Jones won the Boys Div III Sweeps over Nordhoff (Ojai) 86 (81:37) – 140 (83:41). Div IV Sweeps action (to mimic the state meet, which now had four divisions) had David Brackett (Calaveras) 16:08 the Boys’ winner, with Coronado 80 (87:45) win a tight team contest. Shaluinn Fullove ( Louisville, Woodland Hills) took the Girls Div IV contest at 19:31, with Flintridge Sacred Heart (La Canada) the team titlest!

Saturday’s action, with a huge crowd in attendance, was highlighted by Julia Stamps’ CR run, with the Santa Rosa soph star responding with a 2:26 final downhill and flat half-mile off of Reservoir Hill to drop the CR from 17:15 by Milena Glusac to what, at the time, seemed an outer stratosphere 16:58. Julia would win the National prep CC title later that winter by 30 seconds, so she was very hot that Fall!! Kim Mortensen ( Thousand Oaks), another future great, took the Girls Team Sweeps contest at 18:24, with her squad the winner with 65 points (96:31). On the Boys’ side, it was Thousand Oaks, and Coach Jack Farrell rolling once again, with a super 49 point total (100 point win) and 78:19 Team Time (#3 AT on the course!). All five TO scorers were under 16:00 on the challenging course. Eleazar Hernandez (Camarillo) (15:02) and Antonio Arce (Palmdale) (15:09), eventually 5 th and 7 th respectively in the National Prep CC Championships in December, were 1-2 in that Team Sweeps event. James Liu ( Temple City) 15:21 was the Individual Sweeps winner over Tom Prindiville (De la Salle, Concord) 15:22 in the Individual Sweeps race.

Stamps left an amazing impression that morning, and she went on to a minute triumph in the State Meet at Division I, racing 17:06 at Woodward Park. Peninsula took the Girls Div I state title that Fall, with Thousand Oaks the Boys. Antonio Arce took the Boys Div II title, with Jesuit ( Sacramento) the team winners there. Agoura’s Amy Skieresz took the Girls Div II Championship, with Buchanan ( Clovis) the Girls Div II title over Yucaipa on the 6 th runner rule after both tied with 108 points. The Clayton Valley girls rolled to the State Div III title, with Heather Garritson ( Buena Park) the individual champ. MIcheil Jones ( Livermore) was the State Boys Div III Champ, with Nordhoff reversing the Mt. SAC finish team-wise for the win over El Modena, and Livermore. Kristen Schreiber (Miramonte, Orinda) was the State Div IV Champ with Central Valley (Northern Section) taking the team championship on that side. Galvin Gonzalez of McFarland led his team to the Boys’ Div IV title on another 6 th runner rule, with they and Morro Bay tied at 62 on the countback through 5!
