Serrano team from Mt. SAC Invite - Donna Dye photo

It was a busy Saturday 11/13 for the Tarver sisters of Serrano (Phelan). The two super all-around athletes played in a CIF Tennis match at home in the morning, then jetted down to Mt. SAC to race in the Section Prelims in Cross-Country. Frosh Kauren blazed a 17:41 heat win in Race #25 at 3:02 pm in the afternoon, with the squad coming in second to highly rated Edison (Huntington Beach). Soph sister Lauren, an All-CIF soccer player last winter for Serrano, raced 20:06 after some tennis action earlier in the day to help lead the team into the finals!!

Below are the results from the afternoon CC contest, and below the Tennis story from the local paper.

Dolphins dispose of D'backs
MRL champions finish season at 16-2

Phelan — The Serrano girls tennis team appeared to have all of the stars aligned as it headed into its CIF-Southern Section Division III second-round match with visiting Chadwick. The Diamondbacks were at home and it was the Dolphins who had to make the long two-hour-plus trek from Palos Verdes Peninsula. Serrano also had the match switched to 10 a.m. for fear of a repeat of this past Thursday's weather (cold, windy and possible rain). And it appeared Chadwick was beatable; the Dolphins didn't dominate in winning their first round match against Hart. But even with great odds in their favor, the D'backs could not overcome a team with players who have constant coaching and training year-round. Chadwick won eight of nine singles matches, including two forfeits, in knocking Serrano out of the playoffs with a 13-5 win on Saturday. "They were really good," said Dougie McCaulley, one half of the D'backs' No. 1 doubles team. "We just went out there and we definitely gave it our best but we didn't come out on top." Doubles has been one of the Diamondbacks' strong points this year and it showed against the Dolphins. Four of Serrano's winning sets came via doubles. McCaulley and partner Sade Tate were able to win two sets from the Dolphins and they nearly beat Chadwick's No. 1 team, losing 6-4. Winning a set apiece were the teams of Alyssa Swift and Amanda Klein and Mindy DeYoung and Vanessa Garcia. Lauren Tarver was the only Serrano singles player to snag a set from Chadwick. Tarver won 7-5 against the Dolphins' No. 2 player, Bridgett Bartlett. Tarver and her sister, Kauren, didn't get a chance to win another set as the third rotation came. The two left to run in the CIF-SS cross country preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College. The match wasn't in doubt when the two departed, as Chadwick had already clinched the victory. Despite the second-round exit, coach Jolene Rogers was pleased with the team's season. Serrano finished 16-2, one of the best records in school history. The D'backs went undefeated in the Mojave River League at 8-0 and they're only losing three players to graduation. "To me, it was outstanding what they accomplished this year," Rogers said. "We're only losing three, so we're young. We have a few more good years in us."
