Cross-Country Coaching Clinic

The Summer Dead Period will be over next week and it will be time to dive into cross-country head first, and what better way to start than with a great coaching clinic featuring an unbelievable line-up of championship coaches who will be focusing not only on their training philosophies but also on all the ancillary training and coaching they do that have raised their teams to the highest levels.

Look at this line up of presenters!

Don Salyers: Don Lugo HS-2003 State DI Boys Champions
Bill Tokar: Ventura HS-2003 State DI Girls Champions
Tim McIntosh: St. John Bosco HS-2003 State DII Boys Champions
Kevin Smith: Oak Park HS-2003 State DIV Girls Champions

How about Salyers of Don Lugo not only outlining the exact training schedule his team followed from June to the state title in 2003 but also going over in detail his impressive program of drills, plyometrics and strength training.

Not sure how to teach plyos? Well, how about the best clinician you have ever heard, Michelle Buchiccio, presenting both a beginning and advanced session on plyos and drills.

How about Tim McIntosh outlining the impressive run his St. John Bosco team went on last year that led the school to a state title and has set them on course to be the early favorite to win again in 2004.

How about Bill Sumner outlining how he teaches, prepares and then watches his teams flawlessly execute brilliant race strategies that have firmly placed Corona Del Mar as a high school distance powerhouse for years.

How about John Rouse, who has been a force at Division 5 powerhouse Maranatha for decades, leading his squad to an impressive championship performance in last year's state meet. John will specifically be tackling the unique challenges that face division 4 and 5 schools and their coaches.

How about Kevin Smith showing how to incorporate fun runs and special team workouts into your overall training plan-must work pretty well at Oak Park-three out of four boys and girls state titles in the past two years.

How about Ken Reeves and Bill Tokar showing you how they use pool workouts to keep their athletes fresh and strong for the end of the season-it's worked for 12 state titles between them.

How about strength training for all your athletes--even when the weight room is being used by the minor fall sport of football-Jon Zimmerman will outline his strength program.

New coaches don't be intimidated either! There will be a full program designed specifically just for you! Along with these great advanced sessions, the full AAF Level 1 beginning level program will be offered. This Beginning Level program, which has been recognized nationally as one of, if not the, finest of its kind, takes the beginning coach and gives you in one day the tools you need to become a solid cross country coach.

And, finally, don't discount the time you will be able to spend before and after each session, at lunch, and after the clinic, talking one on one or in small groups with all of these great coaches-it will make for a great day!
