CONTRA LOMA CLASSIC VI
SATURDAY – OCTOBER 4, 2003
CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

A DISTANCE RUNNERS’ FESTIVAL

Contra Loma Regional Park, Antioch – CA.

The Contra Loma Classic is a mid-season “grass-roots” – home town feel invitational -- intended to bring high school X-Country teams together early on in the mid-season so they can get to run a challenging and fun course to kick off the great fall-sport of Cross Country. Contra Loma Regional Park (EBRPD) is located in the beautiful rolling California Delta-Diablo Foothills of Antioch. This meeting place is ideal where Bay Area, NCS, as well as far away teams in the California Central Valley can compete.

All races for the day are run on a 2.05 mile challenging-rolly-hilly course (first 1/4 mile is flat). The area is very scenic, and it is a great spectators course ( 90% view-able ) and it is a good season starter invite!

There will be plenty of fine custom medals and trophies. Contra Loma has a lot of picnic tables and grass space to choose from as well as plenty of restroom facilities in the area for your day picnic use. AND - There will be CLC custom-designer T-shirts on sale too.

Both starting/finish areas (separate from each other) for the CLC are also near the beach front of Contra Loma Reservoir. So when it is hot, everyone can take a dip into the lagoon-lake beach for a refresher after their races are over (bring towels !!!). There is plenty of parking for personal vehicles and busses.

However, if you have a talented runner that is F/S and usually runs Varsity, then you may run the athlete F/S and not have to bring up a JV runner provided that you have at least 5 runners in the varsity races and that there is no stacking up in the JV races. The majority of the varsity runners MUST be faster than the JV runners from your team. Fairness is the key and this insures accurate and fair race results for all races. Please enter your top 7 runners in the varsity race. Athletes can ONLY race in ONE race only, no doubling up! Both varsity races are restricted to a seven runner limit, all others are unlimited. All code of conduct rules from the CIF apply at the CLC.

CLC course directions....
Wheeled 5-10-98 with a foot wheel meter.
Done by Coaches Mike Amorosa & Coach Amanda Dillon

The start is on top of the grassy rise NE of the park resident trailer. You’ll find a sandstone outcropping on the ground. Line this up with the small cottonwood SE of this sandstone. The cottonwood is the tree closest to the gravel trail. Gravel trail is south of the start.
The course proceeds SE into dirt parking lot, then takes a hard right along the border of the parking lot. Then it heads left heading East into the other dirt parking lot, then it takes a hard left around the perimeter of this second parking lot. then it goes towards the trees that are next to the picnic tables and a restroom. then it goes up through the gate entrance up the switch back up to the roller coaster and then goes right/west (backwards on regular course). When it comes down the hill, you head for the varsity hill, but then you make a hard right at the lake edge and go around varsity hill and proceed backwards on the regular course. Go up the varsity hill in the backwards direction, and come down varsity hill towards the beach. Finish directions next paragraph.
FINISH: From the finish, at two cottonwood trees near the waterfront, west of the beach. These two trees are situated at the last two picnic tables near each cottonwood. The two cottonwoods are directly north/south of each other, west of the two horse shoe pits, and directly next to 2 picnic tables. The finish shoot can be directed straight towards the beach. The finish is about 100 yds from the small cottonwood that turns off from the gravel trail. So when one finishes the course, one hits this small cottonwood and then goes left heading towards the beach into the finish as described above.

.5 mile to go: At the 11th regular metal pole on west side of the downhill portion of the trail, this is where the .5 mile to go, or the 1.55 mile mark is.

1 mile to go is at the connector trail going over the towards the fence line, near the 2 pine trees that are on the other side of the fence. The actual mark for the mile is about 10 ft. from the main fence trail or you can go from the metal fence bars: count north from the metal fence pole that lines up with the owls box/nest near the live pine tree, then count north to the 7th pole and this is where the 1 mile to go (or the 1.05 mile) is on the connector trail.

1.5 mile from finish: (or 1.55 into course) it is the 13th metal pole from the (two) double wood post on the roller coaster on the south side of the trail.

Coming out of gate, proceed directly North w/ BR on right (9030 ft), w/ fruit tree on the left of the BR. then go directly to road, make left (or right into course) at the last parking isle w/ 3 maple trees along roads edge.

Next go along edge of parking lot towards the right head towards the next parking lot heading west and at the NO Parking sign on left of lot this the 2.0 mile mark FROM the finish line. This sign is in the middle (to left of course) of the adjacent parking lot, it is the third dirt lot or 3rd overflow lot out of 5.

Top of hill start: this start is 93 yards from (280ft) from the No Parking sign.
