Three-time state champion runner Yong-Sung Leal dropped by Chinese
Christian Schools last week to share some advice with the cross country team as they
approach their first season of league competition. After five years of
participating in invitationals only, CCS is joining the Hayward Area
Athletic League for cross country this year. The HAAL includes, among
others, Arroyo High, from which Yong-Sung graduated and where his sister
Yu-Mee still attends.

About forty runners listened as Yong-Sung recalled his early years of
running, which were not always distinguished by immediate or complete
success. He noted, however, that his defeats and disappointments served
to motivate him and help refine his personal goals. As he began to meet
these initial goals, it gave him the confidence to set new ones. Learning to
clarify his objectives also helped him improve his focus and concentration
in other areas.

He discussed some of the injuries that he has sustained and the
difficulties he encountered in recovery. He encouraged the team to continue in spite
of the inevitable setbacks that may occur.

Yong-Sung is currently taking classes at Chabot College while continuing
his own personal training. He is also mulling over a number of possibilities
in the way of four-year colleges next year.
