1983 - 20 years ago at the Section Level - What happened!!

20 Years Ago Statewide in the Section Meets - 1983!!

Kirsten O'Hara (Palos Verdes) tough in Southern Section action with record run at Mt. SAC below - Calvin Gaziano (Castro Valley) leads a Northern California pack during the 1983 prep harrier season - Read below to see how these and other folks did before most of you were born

With the National Kinney series in operation by 1983 (we’ll cover that in the next couple of weeks) there was a sense of “closure” to the prep harrier season by the early 1980's, with the top teams and individuals driving to Fresno in those days for the Regional as kind of an “unofficial state sorting out” affair at the end of the local season. The best from there obviously made it on as individuals to the national affair, held in San Diego. 1983 through the Section Finals, from the descriptions below, was truly a special one, with records below such as an individual one achieved at Mt. SAC in Southern Section action and a number of names who found themselves in the history books on the sport making appearances (again for the purposes of the CIF governing bodies) at the local levels.
Enjoy - sure we got a boo-boo or two in our interpretation of history, blame it on senility, but we figure it is far better than nothing----------send us corrections

Northern
1983 - Shasta HS (Redding) 3 miles
Boys - Yreka (68) over Lassen (Susanville) 81, with Mike Wall, who we assume was Coach Bob Wall’s son (one of the most successful coaches in State history at the Northern Section school), the individual champ at 15:53 over Ernie Freer of Hayford (16:20), who went on to we believe break 4:00 for the mile at Fresno State or shortly thereafter.
Girls - Donna Martin of Enterprise (Redding) took the Girls title at 19:30 over Angela Bonomini (Red Bluff) 19:37, with Chico a narrow win over Shasta (Redding) 50-52 on the team side.

Sac Joaquin
1983 - Sierra College, Rocklin
Boys - Jesuit was impressive as a team, with individual runner-up Rod Grieve 15:27 leading the squad to a 26 point total to win over Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 100. Mark Mastalir (5th), Eric Mastalir (16th), and Paul Thomas (17th), who we believe all run under 8:55 for 3200m were a part of the scoring five for the very special Coach Walt Lange early 1980's crew. Pete Vicencio took the individual Section win at 15:23 for that year.
Girls - Joni Mooney (Vacaville) won her fourth consecutive Section crown in the sport, with the 17:40 run over Sally Pinkner (Davis) 17:57, with Sally falling early and having to work her way up through the pack. Mooney had actually won a section title while competing for Jepson JHS in the ninth grade. Mooney had her guardianship transferred to her Coach, Mike Larsen, her senior year, when her US Air Force parents were transferred to Korea. During 1983 she did suffer being hit by a car and a stress fracture that she spent the summer recovering from before her fall cross-country successes. Del Oro (Loomis) took the team win with 53 points over St. Francis (Sacramento) and their 105 point total.

North Coast
1983 - Shadow Cliffs Park - Pleasanton - 3 miles
Boys - Calvin Gaziano (14:43) and John Bass (14:53) went 1-2 for Castro Valley, with Gaziano a junior who stated that he should be the Northern Cal favorite for the competition after section in those days. Gaziano was colorful, always good for a quote, with I remember him stating after dropping out of the Kinney Nationals in San Diego one year, “I never could run a good race in San Diego!” Redwood (Larkspur) took the Boys team contest with 97 over Miramonte (Orinda) 117. The Girls had Piedmont (80) win narrowly over San Ramon (Danville) 84 (which had 2 girls fall during the race), with Noreen de Bettencourt (Carondelet, Concord) a 17:47 winner over Julie Rivers (Livermore) 17:58.

San Francisco
1983 - Polo Fields - SF - Boys 3.1 miles - Girls 2.7 miles

Boys -Michael Wright (Washington, SF) took the Boys’ contest by 15 seconds in 18:44 to lead his team to a 26-49 win over Lowell.
Girls - Maura Digiesi (McAteer) took a 30 second win at 20:05, with Lowell taking another team title, 25-47 over McAteer.

Oakland
1983 - Lake Merritt - 2.6 miles
Boys - Michael Kelly (Oakland) was the individual champ at 13:53, with Skyline the team winners .
Girls - Judy Calandra (Skyline) took the Girls title at 18:08 leading her team to a 15 point sweep of the contest.

Central Coast
1983 - Crystal Springs, Belmont - 2.93 miles
Boys - Matt Guisto (San Mateo) gave a sense of things to come in the next few weeks (we’ll get to that in a week or two or three in this column) with a 15:04 run at Crystal Springs to win over Chris Craig (Leigh, SJ) 15:28. The wet and muddy course held Matt back, and he was quoted, “I could have run 14:30 today on a dry course.” Willow Glen and Bellarmine Prep tied at 105, with the 6th runner rule having WG the eventual winner. Alex Miroschenenko (currently we think a top track and cross-country photog the 6th runner for runner-ups Bellarmine).
Girls - Shannon Clark (Mountain View), daughter of recently deceased former Stanford and Saratoga HS Coach Marshall, took the section title in a run-away, racing 17:44 to win over Monica Daly (Los Gatos) 18:21, with eventual UC Berkeley star Sabrina Han (Westmoor) 18:24 in third. Los Gatos was the team winners with 68 points over St. Francis 88.

Central
1983 - Hart Park, Bakersfield
Boys - Clovis, a 1980's power under Coach Steve Ward, currently a Principal of a technology High School in the Clovis District, took the Boys’ team title with 51 over Sanger’s 70, with Chris Bahr (Mt. Whitney, Visalia) the individual champ at 14:36 in Hart Park in Bakersfield, with Sanger going 2-3-4 with Leal (14:40), David Naranjo (14:50), and Hurtado (14:50).
Girls - Lori Cook of Golden West (Visalia) took the individual title at 11:47 over Lisa Lewis (Clovis) 11:49, with Clovis winning here also with 47 over Clovis West’s 83. The Clovis HS group kind of ran the paperwork end of the California State meet for a number of years after it started in 1987.

Southern
1983 - Mt. SAC
Boys - Some great action here. Danny Holmes (Santa Barbara), who we believe spent most of his prep career overseas with his parents working in Southeast Asia or somewhere, surprised pre-race 4A favorite Jesus Gutierrez (Pasadean) 15:00-15:01 right at the end of the Mt. SAC course, with El Toro 95 (80:50) over Corona del Mar 104 (80:40) for the 4A team win. 3A had Barstow and Coach Don Braden, a master of the late-season peak, going after its fifth consecutive area team plaque for a 1st or 2nd place!! With Ed Toro (15:02) and Jim Ortiz (15:09) going 1-2 the desert power rolled to a 59 (78:39 Southern Section team time record) - 104 (81:14) win over Mira Costa and Coach Dave Holland. I do no think Braden ever spoke at a clinic, but could get kids up to run the last week of the season like no one I think we have ever seen! He would have been interesting to hear talk about how to approach a season on the mental side. Boys 2A had Coach Tim O’Rourke and his Arroyo crew romp to 30 points for their win with a 79:16 team time (at that time the #9 team time ever at Mt. SAC). Frank Ramirez (Lompoc) was 15:27 for the individual win, with Brock Reagan leading the Arroyo flood in second at 15:31, with Mike Perez (Arroyo) 3rd at 15:41, and super Rosemead frosh Aaron Moscarro 15:53 next. Sherman Indian (Riverside), under Coach Ken Taylor had a great rivalry with La Salle (Pasadena) in those days under Coach Don Blair. Sherman usually pulled the stops out for the Finals, with a 27 (81:49) to 64 (82:20 win over La Salle here, with J.P. Hall (15:16) the winner for La Salle.
Girls - Kirsten O’Hara (Palos Verdes) had one of prep history’s great female runs here, winning by over a minute and taking down the old course record (Katie Dunsmuir of Palisades 17:25 from 1982) with a 17:16 effort. O’Hara completed the local season undefeated and romped away after a 5:20 first mile to record-land this day. Tustin, the State’s best team (we’ll get to that year’s overall state rankings in a few weeks, which we did with Howard Willman from the San Jose area in those days) took the Section 4A run 54 (95:28) over Palos Verdes 81 (95:01). Current Corona AD Don Chadez had a talented group take the 3A title with 67 (95:59 #7 All-Time team), with Sylvia Mosqueda (San Gabriel) 17:53 (#10 time ever on the course in those days) over Liza Rizzo (Hart) 18:08 indivdiually. Girls 2A had Lompoc with 85 (101:19) over Arroyo Grande 102 (102:49), with Chantal Plante (AG) 18:32 winner. Morro Bay, under “still-at-it” Coach Cary Nerelli, who has added amazing Girls Basketball and for many years Track successes also, a fine team run to a 62 (100:43) - 117 (107:01) win over area rival Atascadero as Patty Almendariz (St. Monica, Santa Monica) 19:02 was the individual champ. Patt was interesting, as I remember she was the only Section champion who would walk during part of the course, choosing that strategy part-way up tough “poop-out” hill each season at Mt. SAC, winning here by 19 seconds despite the “time-out” from running.

Los Angeles
Pierce College
Boys - Full team results escaped us this year, but we know that junior Roman Gomez (Belmont, LA), under Coach Robin Paulsen, one of the top distance runners ever out of the LA City, took that individual title.
Girls - Frances Silva (Kennedy, Granada Hills) took the LA City Section title

San Diego
1983 - Lindo Lake - Lakeside
Boys - Ted Goodlake (Fallbrook) had the day’s quickest time, a 15:18 over Robert Fithen of Serra (15:22), with third placer Martin Sandoval (15:29) leading his Monte Vista team to a 44-47 win over Serra. Adolfo Garcia (Escondido) took the 2A race at 15:27, with El Camino the team winners there with 52. Pat Green (La Jolla) was the 1A winner at 15:41 with University City (SD) 55 over Ramona 60 for the team win.
Girls - Lesley Noll (Mt. Carmel) prefaced a great career over moving up to the 800, with the Section 400 champ in her first year of cross-country taking the 3A title 12:00-12:01 over Lora Cook (Santana, Santee). Vista was the team 3A winners with 64 points. Pauline Stehly (Orange Glen, Esc) took the 2A title in the day’s quickest, 11:50 as Valhalla took that title over Bonita Vista 72-74. Katherine Riddle (Coronado) 12:21 took the 1A title with El Camino 66-77 over Coronado in the team contest.
