25 years ago - Cindy Schmandt (Santa Barbara HS) - 1984 Track season 4:51.9 mile - 10:20.0 2 mile - anchored 12:07.4y distance medley relay - 1983 strong CC season!! one of Coach Vern Gambetta's "Don" stars

Mid-October 1978 (25 years ago)
Dos Pueblos Invitational (SS) action had San Marino squads under Coach Phil Ryan sweep both sides of the team contests!! Kyle Lubsen (Millikan, Long Beach) was the day’s quickest with a 15:15, with Mary Carmen (San Marcos, Santa Barbara) a 13:05 winner over Diane Brink (SM) 13:07 on the Girls’ side.

The San Gabriel Valley Invitational (SS) at Mt. SAC had an Ebiner sweep, with one of the many Boys’ runners (anyone with 1978 info on who this was please e-mail us) racing 15:22 on the old course there, with a female Ebiner (sorry no first name in the results) 12:43, as the Girls were not up to 3 miles yet at that time. Walnut was 84:44 Team Time Boys, with Glendora 32 points to take the Girls’ title.

Mid-State action had at the Righetti Invitational (Santa Maria) Barasa Thomas (Santa Barbara by way of Kenya) 14:34 over Eric Sappenfield (SB) 14:45, with Quartz Hill 31-40 winners over SB in the Div I race. Pete Magill (La Canada) was 14:51 with his school 32 the Div II winners. Linda Goen (North, Bakersfield) was 10:59 to win the Girls’ contest over Kelly Wells (Quartz Hills) 11:14, with Santa Barbara, led by Cindy Schmandt in 4th, the team winners with 56 points.

Mid-October 1983 (20 years ago)
Fleet Feet Invitational (older version of Clovis Invitational held at State meet course actually late September) had Gary Nagel (Mt. Whitney, Visalia) 15:06 on a course of 3 miles minus 103 yards over Paul Thomas (Jesuit), with Jesuit 45-48 Boys winners over Clovis. Chantel Plante (Arroyo Grande) took the Girls’ contest at 17:30, with Sally Pinkner (Davis) 17:46 in second. Clovis had 35 to win over Davis 54 in the Girls team contest!

Crystal Springs Invitational (held in mid-October) had Overfelt’s Sean Crowley 14:54 winner over Rodney Grieve (Jesuit) 15:12, with frosh Jason Lienau third at 15:13. Mark Mastalir (Jesuit) was 4th at 15:17. Jesuit was 33-49 over Clovis here. Nick Sparks (Bella Vista, Fair Oaks), who later became a famous author and contributed heavily to the Bella Vista All-Weather track fund of recent years, took the other Varsity race at 15:00, with eventual Kinney National CC Champ Matt Guisto (San Mateo) next at 15:11. Joni Mooney (Vacaville) was a 17:34 winner on the Girls’ side over Deonne Self (Del Campo, Fair Oaks) 18:17, with Clovis 71-113 over Del Campo for the Girls team title.

Dos Pueblos Invitational - David Baca (San Marino), son of current LA County Sherriff Peter Baca, had the day’s quickest clocking at 15:36, with Andy Allen (SM) 15:45 to take a junior grade race behind him, with Teresa Mayfield (Righetti, Santa Maria) the day’s quickest Girl, at 18:42. Dos Pueblos took the Boys Sweeps title with Cabrillo (Lompoc) the Girls!

Mid-October 1988 (15 years ago)
Clovis Invitational (actually held late September in those days) had David Welsh (Jesuit, Sacramento) a 15:22 winner over Louie Quintana (Arroyo Grande), who later would win the Kinney National CC Title, at 15:24. Del Campo (Fair Oaks) 72 took the team title over Bellarmine (San Jose) 83, and Jesuit 90. Ashley Black (Palos Verdes) 19:02 winner led her team to a victory with a scary 25 point total (5th runner 20:07). Santa Teresa, with runner-up Evie Berry (19:05) was next with 84.

Central Park Invitational - Huntington Beach (SS) - Pat Hubbard (Basic, Henderson, Nv) who was a 9:07 3200 star the year before, had the quickest Boys Time with a Div I win at 15:34, with Upland taking that Boys Div I team contest with 53 points. Bryan Dameworth (Agoura) took the Div II contest at 15:42, with Bryan eventually another Californian who took a Kinney National CC title! Fine age-grouper Tanya Brix (University, Irvine) had the day’s quickest girls’ time as a frosh, racing 18:37 in a Div II contest, with Newport Harbor the top Girls team of the day with a Div II win and 102:07 team time.

Artichoke Invitational (Half Moon Bay - CCS) - had Del Campo take the Boys’ Large School contest with 70-86 win over Los Gatos, with Shumeye Mamo (Berkeley) an 11:51 winner over Jason Atwood (Castro Valley). Andy Bupp (Woodside) took the Small School title at 11:28, with Kevin Berkowitz (Hayward) 11:34 next. Half Moon Bay took that title. Beth Bartholomew (Fremont, Sunnyvale) was a 14:04 Girls Large Schools winner, with Los Gatos 43 points for that win. Amy McConnell (University, Irvine) was 14:07 for a Girls Small School win, with Redwood (Larkspur) 75-88 winners over Half Moon Bay.

Mid-October 1993 (Ten Years ago)
Crystal Springs (CCS) action had bees interrupt the action, with 20-30 runners stung during a junior varsity race! Jason Balkman (Lynbrook, San Jose) was the day’s quickest at 15:09, with Bellarmine 29 points for a snappy win! Aptos took the Girls’ title with 48 points, as Emily Allison (Leland) was 17:54 for the victory.

Clovis Invitational (moved to the second weekend in October by this time) had Matt Farley (Jesuit, Sacramento) 15:30 to win over Kropf of Madera 15:47, with Madera a wicked 26 point total to win over Jesuit’s 63. Castaneda (Madera) took the Girls’ contest at 19:42 (me thinks heat was a factor this year) over Jamie Whitmore (Valley, Sacramento) 19:50, with Madera 48-50 winners over Carondelet. Daniel of Granada, Livermore was 19:38 in winning the Small School Varsity Girls’ race, with David Mitchell (Morro Bay) 16:05, with Morro Bay an impressive team sweep at that level (Boys 23, girls 31).

Dos Pueblos Invitational (SS) - Warren Wolf (San Marino), Coach Phil Ryan’s latest star, blazed a 15:11 winner (CR National CC Champ Eric Reynolds from Camarillo 14:55), with Amy Van Atta (Buena, Ventura) 19:11 the quickest Girl at the competition. Nordhoff took the Girls Sweeps (all grades added up), with San Marino the Boys.

Kenny Staub Invitational (SS) - Antonio Arce (Palmdale), who went on to Notre Dame (Ind) University to run, had the day’s quickest Boys’ time of 15:42 over Agoura’s John Greene (15:43), with Palmdale the Div I win with 41 points (fine 81:35 team time). Saugus took the Girls Div I contest with 25 points (102:35 team time), with Muir’s Nigerian transfer, Mary Nwaoguakor 19:08 the day’s quickest.

Central Park Huntington Beach Invite (SS) - The nation’s #4 ranked Boys team from Thousand Oaks totaled 19 points in winning its division here, with Brandon Del Campo (14:53) leading a team that averaged 15:06 this day! TO took seven of the top ten places in a good quality Div I contest! Santa Ana won another Boys Varsity race with 26 points. Sac Joaquin star Sarah Dickerman (Del Campo) was the quickest Girl of the day at 18:23
