Historical Information - Joe Rubio with some corrections and additions to History of California CC Section!!

More Historical Information - Corrections and "Fact-Bites!" - Joe Rubio - Venue Sports

Regarding the post on Calif History. The post on 9/24 where nobody
knows what happened to Coleen Donovan. She ran for Harter and Cal Poly.
Also, Kipp Ortenburger ran for Cuesta College locally and then ran for
Fresno State not Cal Poly. He ran 4:00.21 for the mile, but never broke
4, he did run 3:39 for a 1500 though.

On the most recent post, in the first paragraph where you have Soito
from Mt Pleasant and Baldoras listed, it's actually Soto and Balderas.
Felix ran 9:16, while Fernando was one of the only guys to win the mile,
2 mile double at CCS, which he did his junior year.

Finally, I haven't seen a single thing on the #1 ranked boys team in the
state for 1983, Willow Glen. They had a fierce battle with Leigh HS
early that year at Artichoke and ended up winning Nor Cal's with 44
points, tied for the lowest team total with Mission San Jose. Their
team has a 9:09, 9:11 and 9:13 2 milers, along with a future 14:12 5k
runner as their 4th and a wrestler as their 5th. Their 6th man ended up
being Chelsea Clinton's secret service agent while at Stanford while the
7th man won CCS XC 2 years later as well as going onto UCLA to be team
captain and their top runner.

That's it for now. Joe

Below is some of the CCS research that has been done by Hank Lawson and crew and you can see the depth to the Willow Glen program during the 70's and early 80's - Wow!! the 82-83 Willow Glen crew has to be one of the State's all-time great distance groups - 47:32 for a five man two mile is a tad over 9:30 per runner - pretty solid 8-lapping!!

the postal meets used to be popular, especially in the CCS, where teams ran a two mile on the track and added up the five best times ever - National Record is 46:21 set by Lompoc from 1972 (9:16 average for full two miles - worth 9:12 or 9:13 average for 3200m - stunning performance where running in flats on dirt track Terry Williams (now a doctor in Portland area after great career at Univ Oregon after Lompoc HS) led pack had their eighth runner go 9:28! Remember the Lompoc group racing off the airstrip at Mt. SAC at the start during the days of the two mile contests in the CIF Prelims with the last seven places, working on "moving up" that week, ending with under 30 points in a fairly loaded CIF SS Division I Prelims contest.
