Late-September/Early October 1978 (25 years ago)
Northern California’s Alum Rock Invite had the Mission San Jose
Boys’ group edge Mira Loma (Sacramento) 44-47, with Steve Strangio,
part of a super group through Coach Jack Marden’s program in those
days winning at 11:22.8. Fuller of Mira Loma won over Liz Strangio (MSJ)
on the Girls’ side at 13:34, with MSJ 32 points to win there.
The CCS Aptos Invite had Soito (Mt. Pleasant, San Jose) win the Large
Schools race at 12:32, with Baldoras (San Jose) the Small School run at
12:39. Team winners was Watsonville Boys Large Schools and James Lick
in the Smaller Schools run. Schneider of Santa Cruz took the Girls combined
race at 13:50, with Leigh the team winners with 87 points.
Late-September/Early October 1983 (20 years ago)
The Montebello Invitational had Hawthorne HS dominate, with the Cougar
program of Ed Bravo (Cross-Country) and Kye Courtney (Track & Field)
the most overall feared program in the nation in those days! Voncille
Brown (Hawthorne) set a Soph course record at 18:34, with Eicher and Hayes
of Rowland at 18:33 in their senior race, running together. Richardo Rubio
(Hawthorne) was the day’s quickest at 15:08, with David Whitworth
(Hawthorne) 15:32 in winning the 11th grade run! Hawthorne was 98:13 on
the Girls side team-time wise, with the Boys 79:34 in taking the overall
team titles there
The San Ramon Invitational in Northern California had been postponed a
week because of rain. The course was 1 7/8 miles, with Jim Howard (Northgate,
Walnut Creek) taking Mike Goralka (Livermore) 9:13-9:16 in the Large School
Boys race. Scott Savage (Foothill, Pleasanton) set a CR for the Small
School level with a 9:12 run. San Ramon (Danville) and Encinal (Alameda)
took the Boys Team Titles. Laura Carter (San Ramon) raced 11:17 to win
the Girls Large School run, with her team totalling 42 for the win. Thomas
(Alameda) was the Small Schools winner at 11:49, with Alhambra (Martinez)
47 for a narrow win over Las Lomas (Walnut Creek).
Arlington Invitational action in Riverside in the Southern Section had
Barstow roll in on the Boys’ side, with Jim Ortiz (15:29) and Eddie
Toro (15:41) going 1-2 on the way to a 42 point total win (82:30 team
time best of day). Rubidoux (Riverside), led by Trish Ramirez (19:05 win)
took the Div III win over Arlington 63 (103:01) - 69 (104:46) in the day’s
quickest team times.
Buena Park Invitational action had Villa Park’s Boys, led by the
1-2 of Kevin Green and Dave Parker edge hosts Buena Park 42 (79:05) -
48 (79:33). Irvine’s girls were very strong in the pre-state meet
days, totalling 22 points behind Chapel’s 18:16 winner (95:26 team
time).
Late-September/Early October 1988 (15 years ago)
Kenny Staub Invite action at Crescenta Valley Park had Bryan Dameworth
(Agoura) match up with Scott Hempel (Walnut) in a great Boys’ race
that had Bryan eventually pull away for the win 15:08-15:13. Jeff Nelson
had set the CR of 15:05 back in 1978, as we covered in the last week or
two. Mike Wiliamson (Thousand Oaks) was 15:16 to move to #5 on the All-Time
Course list. Canyon (Canyon Country), led by Dave Hartman (soph 15:23
here) was 61 points and 81:27 for the win here. The Palos Verdes Girls’
group was very, very impressive with 24 points and a 95:20 team time.
Jamie Park (Santa Barbara) won over Ashley Black of Palos Verdes 18:48.
San Ramon Valley Invite action in Northern California had Rob Scott of
the host school race 9:46 for the individual win, with Santa Rosa, led
by Dan Held’s third place 46-94 winners over SRV. Lle Ferguson (Piner,
Santa Rosa) was a 12:03-12:21 winner over Kristie McCall (SR). San Ramon
Valley won the Girls contest with 49 points.
Yucaipa Invitational action - Strong Girls teams competed here, with
the hosts Yucaipa winning with 42 points (104:26) over Small School power
Maranatha (Sierra Madre) 54 (105:48), with Serrano (Phelan) 72 (106:20).
Tanya Thayer (Serrano), an age-group wonder, was the individual winner
for Serrano at 19:12. Reyna Cervantes (Montebello) took a Div III race
at 19:11. Yucaipa took the Boys’ Varsity contest also, with 75 (85:19).
Coachella Valley (Thermal) star Alex Zamora was 15:51 for the quickest
boy this day.
Late-September/Early October 1993 (Ten Years ago)
The Nevada Union Invitational had some good action, with the host Boys’
team (58) winning that side of the meet, with Carlson (Enterprise, Redding)
16:42-16:53 winner over Bond (NU). On the Girls’ side, Jen Shindler
(Ponderosa, Shingle Springs) was the titlest 19:14 over Maschmeier (Elk
Grove), with Elk Grove 71-79 winners over the host school Nevada Union.
Artichoke Invitational action in the CCS had Konrad Knutsen (Del Campo,
Fair Oaks) the top Boys’ time at 11:30, with Los Gatos totalling
80 for the Large School Boys win. Elissa Reidy of the powerful Mission
San Jose team (sister Lori was third) took the Girls’ contest 13:44-13:53
over Sara Dickman (DC), with MSJ 63 for the win over Sparks (Nv).
Yucaipa Invitational action a decade ago had Jaime Martinez (Orange)
15:37 day’s quickest, with Mike Moreno (Katella, Anaheim) 15:48.
Katella was 39-43 over Santa Ana in the Large School team contest on the
Boys’ side, with both very strong groups! Rondie Gibbs (Rubidoux,
Riverside) was 16:11 to a Medium Schools win, with Yucaipa 62 for the
win there. Doug Henning of Woodcrest Christian (17:28) took the Small
School Boys’ win, with Yucca Valley 83 for the title as a team.
Rebecca Villegas (Rialto) was 19:20 for the day’s quickest Girls’
time over Annie Ebiner (St. Lucy’s, Glendora) 19:40 in the Medium
School race (Tustin 75 point team winners). Melissa Aronson (Hemet) was
20:03 for the large school title with her school 98 points for the team
victory. Rachel Krause (South Hills, W Cov) was 20:41 in the Small Schools
race, with Temescal Canyon (Elsinore) 64 for the team win there.
