Murrieta Valley
HS
XC Team Camp!
We have just wrapped up our running camp at Green Valley Lake
near Big Bear (7200ft). The 51 kids ran some punishing hills every day,
highlighted by our signature “Killer Peak” challenge. On Killer
Peak they race 4 miles up a 1200 ft vertical ascent. This year’s
King of the Peak was Anthony Mercado with a blistering 29:04. He was followed
closely by sophomores Patrick Milloy and Mike Munoz, who both ran sub-30
(29:22 and 29:48, respectively), a feat only performed by 3 runners in
our history. These 3 are fired up for a big season. Queen of the Peak
honors went once again to Liza Pasciuto, who bettered her own course record
with a 33:44 effort.
Both boys and girls squads had an amazing week and are poised
and ready to begin racing in September. We are taking our varsity teams
to Stanford this year for the first time, so we are excited.

Liza Pasciuto’s progression on Killer Peak: 38:32 in 2000;
36:43 in 2001; 34:36 in 2002; 33:44 in 2003. The last 2 miles on this
run are by far the worst and Liza ran pretty close to even splits this
year with a 4th mile faster than the first. It is a killer course (no
pun intended) with literally no flat spots. Pure guts.
The only runners we have ever gone sub-30:00 for us on this
course were Kevin Arnold (course record at 27:42 in 2001 [27:10 last
year as alum]; Kellen Acosta in 2002 at 27:44 [29:30 in 2001]; Lance
Wade in 2002 at 29:35; and Anthony Mercado in 2003 at 29:04.
