San Francisco Section Finals Preview - Andy Leong - Wed 11/20/02 - Polo Fields - Golden Gate Park - Andy Leong

CIF Cross Country Championships
San Francisco Section
Polo Fields, Golden Gate Park - Wednesday 11/20/02

Varsity Boys Division
Lowell’s Brandon Roe (1600 & 3200 meter champion during the 2002 track season) and Jonah Sinick who has made a remarkable comeback after missing his junior year due to illness are the top runners going into the championship race. Defending champion Vlaimir Parrales of Burton will see if his knee has healed enough for him to repeat. Other runners to watch include Burton’s Michael Rivas, Lowell’s Jacob Cutler, Colin Heckman, and Kevin Lo, and Washington’s Alan Wu. Lowell is a strong favorite to win their 8th straight team title (15th in 16 years) with the Burton duo of Parrales and Rivas having the best chance of stopping the Cardinals from a 1 thru 7 sweep.

Varsity Girls Division
Freshmen Anna Li of Lowell and Amanda Conn of Lincoln have the best two times on the S.F. Section course. If one of these two can pull it off, it will mark the first time that a freshman has won the female race. Tracy Zhu of Lowell, who was last year’s champion as a sophomore will also be in the mix. Other runners to watch are Lincoln’s Kineta Wong and Jennifer Lee, Lowell’s Victoria Lau and Susanna Liu and Washington’s Angelina Yu and Diann Leo. Lowell will need to stay sharp against upstart Lincoln but should continue their undefeated San Francisco Section streak that has dated back to 1977.

Frosh/Soph Boys Division
Lincoln looks to end Lowell’s eight-year hold on the developmental division title. Jeffrey Chan of Lincoln led his team at last week’s show down between the two teams as Lincoln beat Lowell 27-34 in a meet also involving Washington. The young Mustangs packed it well, as they were able to finish seven runners before Lowell had finished four. Lowell will look for their trio of defending champion Chris Lao, Johnny Yu and Justin Chin to make up some ground.
