DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week –Troy Werner (Canyon, CC)

One of the great stories this cross-country season was the win of Troy Werner in the Mt. SAC Team Sweepstakes event, we are sure the first ever winner in that prestigious competition who also marked that as his first Varsity race win ever!!! That speaks to some of the competition he faces on his team and in his League, but still his improvement, documented by Coach Paul Bronneer below, is amazing since his ninth grade year, with the star a huge inspiration to all in our sport

Congratulations – Best of Luck Troy

1) After the Mt. SAC race you indicated that this was your first Varsity
race win ever--is that true? Explain the situation on your Canyon team that
makes it tough to win races--has the tradition there been a help to you---?
Yes, it’s true. It’s a little weird that my first win came at Mt. Sac. I
won two frosh/soph races two years ago as a sophomore but lately I have some
fast team and league competition in Ryan Morgan and Kyle Ivie. I’ve had my
entire high school career to look up to Luke and Jamie. Jamie was pretty
much my running hero. It hurt to see him get so close to his goal. (15:01@
SAC, 2 seconds short) That’s all I could think about at the end of my race.
It was close.

2) Briefly trace where you were in position-wise on the different
cross-country teams at Canyon since your ninth grade year–
Freshman- Stepped up to score as 5th man on Frosh-Soph team. 19:15 at SAC
Sophomore- Surprising improvement. 8th man -alternate for Varsity 16:54 at
SAC
Junior- First year on Varsity. Great race at Mt. SAC Invite 17th in 15:41,
#4 man, proved that Canyon wasn’t just a trio...grrrr..... 22nd in State;
15:31 P.R. at SAC

3) What do you think are the couple most important areas that have gone into
improving you so much as a runner the last few years (besides working hard,
what other areas have zoomed you past so many people to a win like Mt.
SAC--any specific areas of concentration on in your training or
preparation)?
I’m not sure. We’ve cut down a bit this year but I would have to say that
the improvement came with the mileage. Our team has put in tons of miles
over the years with Coach Linam and Coach Delong helping a lot last year.
Ever since league finals of my freshman year I’ve tried to surprise Delong.
I still remember the look on his face when he saw me coming in that day.
Even though he was quoted that I didn’t surprise him anymore, I can still
try. Besides that I can only say one thing: It’s all about the soul power.

4) How much running did you do over the summer in preparation for this
season?
Averaged about 60 miles a week with highs in the 70's. Taking the sabbath
day off.

5) How have you done in Track season during the spring during your high
school career?
Oooh....I’ve never really liked track. I love running on courses, I guess
I’ve just never gotten used to running around a track. Freshman year I
played on the JV Tennis team, :-), that was fun, but when I realized I could
do well in running, I went out for track my sophomore year. I ran at two
meets before I injured my knee and was out for the season....dang. Junior
year, all I can really say was that I survived. I just didn’t have my heart
into it and fell 13 seconds short of making it out of league in the two.
9:53 -disappointing. I won’t let that happen again.

6) What kind of goals do you have for yourself the rest of the Fall off
recent happenings?
I really didn’t expect to improve this quickly. My goal since last year
was to break 15 at Sac. Now I want to break the Canyon record of 14:51 at
SAC shared by Luke and Dave Hartman. Besides that, I want to lead my team
to a second state championship. I know we have a lot of competition but all
I can say is grrrrr.......

7) What are your favorite kind of workouts?
Zone runs. Long runs up to 8 miles at a fast pace. I’m just better at
them.

8) What kind of workouts do you like the least in preparation for races?
Sprint workouts. 400 repeats. Ugghhh.....

9) How far would you like to take your running after high school?
I’m not sure. However far I can take it. I think I’ll go with the longer
distance in track. Probably the 10k.

10) What advice would you have for those who are just starting out in
Cross-Country as maybe ninth or tenth graders who may find themselves a bit
behind the lead pack early in their racing careers? What helped you along
during the times when it might have been a bit frustrating to see others
racing quite a bit faster?
I didn’t get a medal my whole freshman year. My coach didn’t even get my
name right half the time. I think he thought I was two different people.
Tyler would be at all the workouts and Troy would be at the races. But it’s
all good, I forgive you Delong. : ) You’re making up for it now. All I
have to say is to keep trying and the improvement will come. My high school
running goals my freshman year were to possibly make Varsity as the #6 or #7
man by my senior year and run sub-17 anything on any course. I started
going on runs with Varsity (Luke, Jamie, Ryan) the summer of my sophomore
year and I can’t remember how many times I fell behind and had to finish the
workout by myself. It hurt when that happened. I must have convinced myself
dozens of times to quit running, but I kept going, and all those times only
made me stronger. Put your faith in the Lord and run with heart, you can
surprise even yourself.
