Mt. SAC Invitational - October 25-26 - Walnut - An Updated Look at the Sweeps Races and explanation for Friday Changes from Meet Director Tim O'Rourke

Explanation of Change in Friday portion of Mt. SAC Invitational Sweepstakes Races

Coach:

Here is an explanation of our combining of the Friday Sweepstakes races into a team and individual race.

Dear High School Division 3, 4 and 5 Coaches:

In an effort to highlight the best of the teams and individual competitors in Divisions 3, 4 and 5, while at that same time giving them the best possible conditions in which to compete, this year we will combine the best teams and best individuals from Division 3, 4 and 5 and place them in a Team Sweepstakes and Individual Sweepstakes race at the end of the Friday schedule when the weather is the coolest—this will be in both the boys and girls divisions and additional awards will be presented in these races.

This follows the same type of scheduling we currently use on Saturday--combining the best schools from Divisions 1 and 2 into the same sweepstakes race. These Saturday Sweepstakes races are without a doubt the highlight of the Saturday meet, and we would like to give that same type of “elite” experience to the athletes who compete on Friday.

We realize some schools do not wish to run “all out” or bring their best squad to the invitational every year, so your team or individual will only be placed in the sweepstakes race if you specifically request it on your official entry.

We still will “seed” the other varsity races in the Division 3 section and the Division 4 and 5 section to ensure that the competition is fair in all races, so even if you do not get placed in a Sweepstakes race, you can be assured you will be placed in a race with relatively equal competition.

There will still be a team “Sweepstakes” champion awarded in EACH of three divisions--3, 4 and 5—this will be based on team time of all the schools that race in that division on Friday, so a school could still win the Sweepstakes title and awards even if it chose not to run in the Sweepstakes race.

For those unfamiliar with the two designations: Team Sweepstakes and Individual Sweepstakes—Team Sweeps is for strong teams and Individual Sweeps is for schools who may have one or two strong runners but the rest of the team is weak.

Thank you very much for your participation in the 55th Annual Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational and I wish you the best of luck.

Sincerely,
Tim O’Rourke
High School Division Director

Addendum:
If you requested to be included in either the Team or Individual Sweeps and now would like to reconsider and have us place your team in a regular Varsity race, please feel free to do so by sending us an e-mail ( [email protected] ).
