A huge race win in the "fastest of the day" time at Stanford of 17:25 in Girls Division II is the lastest accomplishemnt for one of the state's top runners, Caitlin Chock (Granite Bay). A great couple year career was capped by that performance, with her and her coach's attempts to pace this season effectively certainly not making it the final highlight of what should be a super fall. A 10:38.2 3200m star last spring, Chock is one who hopes to end her Fall in San Diego at the Foot Locker Nationals.

We caught up with her during her busy schedule and asked her to answer some questions as our DyeStatCal Prep Athlete of the Week:

1) Briefly summarize your season so far--
I have not done very many races yet this year, and I am going to try to keep it that way until state meet. my other races have not been particularly stellar, but I have been focusing on a few key meets this year, and stanford was the first. I am really excited that I was able to do well.
2) What did you do differently this summer in preparation than in the past?
this past summer, I had the great opportunity to train with lots of awesome women. (three of whom have qualified for the olympic trials in the marathon) I would meet with Katie, Midori, Melanie, Dana, Mary, and Leonard (who coaches all the girls) for hard days, and I really loved the challenge of running at the VERY BACK of their pack, and not having to lead any workouts. I loved the experience of being able to run with such great ladies, and it was so much fun as well.
3) Briefly what did you do the week before Stanford?
for the week of stanford I did a hill workout on monday for preparation on the hill on the stanford course, and my last hard day leading up to the race was on wednesday. after that, I just did relaxed runs to get me ready to race; and I visualized running a smart race.
4) Great time there - why did it click that day - your thoughts on?
well, I wasn't sure how the people in the race were going to go out, but my plan was to not go out too quick. I just paced myself, and gradually worked my way to the front of the pack. however, I am positive that one reason I was able to run so well was the fact that I had Natalie White with me for the entire back loop. we were able to work together to push each other to fast times. when I crossed under the bridge for the second time, I felt really strong, and knew that I could push it until the finish. i think that the great weather was another contributing factor.
5) Goals for the rest of the year?
I hope the win the state meet this year, but I know there will be lots of great competition. a really big goal of mine this year it to qualify for the Footlocker Nationals this year. I have been wanting to do that since my freshman year, and i would love to go. :)
6) Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I hope to be working with animals and traveling around the world. I would love to just be able to travel to exotic places, and be able to run in beautiful and new surroundings.
7) Any advice for beginning runners?
just have fun with it. I have had trouble in the past with stressing myself out before races, but I just realized that it is a lot easier and more fulfilling to just not think while I run. just run because you love it, and the rest will follow. good luck to everyone this season!!
