THIS WEEK'S MEET INFORMATION
The top-ranked Stanford men and third-ranked Cardinal women cross country
teams will host the 29th Annual Stanford Invitational this Saturday, September
28. The event, co-hosted by Palo Alto High School, is one of the largest
cross country meets in the nation with 75 collegiate teams (45 women,
30 men) and 304 high school varsity squads (156 boys, 148 girls) currently
scheduled to compete. Approximately 4,100 participants are entered in
the meet. The event will be held at the Stanford Golf Course and features
20 high school and collegiate races. The starting line is near the second
tee of the Stanford Golf Course with parking and a shuttle service to
the starting line available at the corner of Stock Farm Drive and Campus
Drive. The schedule of events is listed below.

2002 STANFORD INVITATIONAL COLLEGIATE PREVIEW
A talented, large and diverse field will converge on the Stanford Golf
Course for the 2002 Stanford Invitational. Stanford is the nation's top-ranked
men's team and third on the women's side in the latest national polls.
The Cardinal men and women finished second and fifth at the NCAA Championships
last year respectively.
Other teams expected to be near the top of the men's standings include
Cal Poly, New Mexico and UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos finished 11th regionally
and 17th nationally last season, as well as third in the men's 8000 meter
team competition at the 2001 Stanford Invitational. Cal Poly finished
eighth in the West Region.
Individually, a group of Stanford student-athletes lead a list of runners
capable of winning either the long or short course competition. Donald
Sage and Grant Robison top the list after respectively winning the NCAA
West Regional and Pac-10 individual titles last season. Sage finished
seventh at the NCAA Championships, while Robison is the defending champion
in the 4000 meters at the Stanford Invitational. Stanford's Louis Luchini
and Ian Dobson, as well as New Mexico's Matt Gonzales are returning All-Americans
also scheduled to compete.
Last year, Stanford swept the men's 8000 and 4000 meter Stanford Invitational
titles. Utah State, UC Santa Barbara, Utah and UC Davis completed the
top five in the 8000 meter event. Stanford scored a minimum number of
15 points for the 4000 meter race. UC Davis finished second, followed
by California, Fresno Pacific and San Jose State.
On the women's side, No. 8 Duke brings one of the top freshmen classes
in the nation into the meet and will join Stanford as the ranked teams
in the event, while traditional powers Wisconsin and UC Santa Barbara
will also look to challenge for the team title. Wisconsin finished third
in the women's 4000 meter race at the 2001 Stanford Cross Country Invitational,
while UC Santa Barbara was sixth in the 6000 meter competition.
Individually, Stanford's Lauren Fleshman is a candidate to compete for
a title after finishing third at the NCAA Championships last year. Fleshman
finished second at the NCAA West Regional and is the defending Pac-10
and Stanford Invitational champion. Stanford All-American Alicia Craig
is the defending Stanford Invitational 4000 meter champion. UC Santa Barbara's
Katie Appenrodt returns after a top 10 finish at the West Regional last
year. Michelle Lilienthal (Wisconsin) and Emilie Mondor (Simon Fraser)
are also expected to return after finishing seventh and ninth in the 4000
meter race at the 2001 Stanford Invitational.
Stanford won both the women's 6000 and 4000 meter races last season.
Arkansas, 2001 NCAA champion Brigham Young, UC Irvine and Utah State completed
the top five in the 6000 meter race. Brigham Young, Wisconsin, Hawaii
and Simon Fraser followed the Cardinal in the 4000 meters.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2002 STANFORD MEN'S TEAM
The outlook is extremely bright for the top-ranked Stanford men's cross
country team with four All-Americans returning from last year's squad
that finished second at the NCAA Championships. Donald Sage heads the
group of returning All-Americans after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships
last season and winning the NCAA West Regional. Grant Robison was also
one of Stanford's top runners all of last season, winning the Pac-10 individual
title and taking second at the NCAA West Regional. Stanford's other returning
All-Americans are Louis Luchini and Ian Dobson. The Cardinal won its first
meet of the 2002 season at the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener with
Adam Tenforde taking his first individual title in 24:44.40 (8000 meters).
None of Stanford's returning All-Americans competed in the meet.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2002 STANFORD WOMEN'S TEAM
The third-ranked Stanford women's cross country team returns three All-Americans
in Lauren Fleshman, Alicia Craig and Erin Sullivan from a team that finished
fifth at the NCAA Championships a year ago. Fleshman is a three-time All-American
and a legitimate contender for the national title after finishing third
at the 2001 NCAA Championships, while Craig placed 28th to earn All-American
honors in her first season. Sullivan was an All-American as a freshman
in 1999. Craig and Sara Bei shared the individual title in 17:01.70 (5000
meters) at the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener to lead the Cardinal
to victory in its first meet of 2002.

STANFORD CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY
The Stanford cross country men's and women's teams have been among the
most successful in NCAA history. The men have placed fifth or higher at
the NCAA Championships for seven consecutive years and won NCAA titles
in 1996 and 1997. The women have been in the nation's top five for six
consecutive years and won an NCAA championship in 1996. The men have also
won the NCAA West Regional for six straight years and the Pac-10 Championships
in five of the last six seasons. The women have won six straight Pac-10
titles and five of the last six West Regional crowns.
