CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Advisory Committee Minutes - Jay Stepp - 9/23/02

CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Advisory "unoffiical" Minutes - Jay Stepp

A review of the Dec. 2001 meeting was discussed. It was accepted that 24 individuals would go from CIF Prelims to CIF Finals. 12 individuals from a 2 team race, 8 individuals from a 3 team race and 6 individuals from a 4 team race. The individuals qualifying to state will remain a 5 provided they finish in the top 20 of CIF Finals.

CIF will furnish a tent for the awards ceremony. Along with the top 2 teams, 10 individuals will be recognized at the presentation. Athletes who place in the top ten will be given a card with their place and time of ceremony. There will be an area for teams and individuals to report to so they save room in the tent area for spectators. Awards ceremony will go as follows: D5-9:00 am, D1-9: 45 am, D2-10: 45 am, D3-11: 10 am, & D4-11: 30
.
New Agenda-

Team awards will be cut to 2 plaques. This is to bring XC in line with other sports. It was pointed out that when were in split divisions, (A, AA), we only gave out 2 plaques & that no other sport gives out 3 plaques. We also receive more medals. We get 15 individual medals along with the 2nd place team medals in each division. This is solely a management decision. It was suggested that the S.S. Coaches Assoc. be allowed to purchase the 3rd place plaque. It was stated that any 3rd place award would not have CIF approval. All concerns need to be directed to Paul Castillo in the CIF Office.

The CIF Office will move in October to 10932 Pine Street in Los Alamitos. Directions & new phone numbers were sent to the schools.

Divisions will be altered in October for Divisions 3,4, &5, Division 5 will be set from 0-350, Division 4 will be set from 351-840, Division 3 will be set from 841-1349, Division 1 & 2 will remain the same as was previously set in the XC preview handbook.

Don Chadez will no longer score or time CIF Prelims & Finals. The Woodbridge scoring system will take over that duty. Athletes will wear bib numbers during these races. It was suggested that the meet manager of the league finals do all entries online. Meet managers will also be required to fax the entries in as a back up. Online entries may be done as a test for 2002 and put in place for 2003. This is contingent on all leagues getting passwords and usernames in a timely fashion.

In order to be considered for an “At-Large” to CIF Prelims a team must be ranked in the top 10 two of the last three polls.

Qualifying to the state meet will be done on a 4-year revolving average on how well your section does at the state meet. All sections will be guaranteed their original allotment, with “At-Large” bids going to sections that perform well at state. This year’s state meet will allow 23 teams to compete. A proposal will be made to the state advisory committee to raise the number to 24 or 25.

The Dead Period for XC will be re-visited to see if the issue of requiring a letter to take the first dead period be changed to requiring a letter to take the second dead period. Last year this issue did not make it past the Blue Book Committee due to lack of information. This year, Paul Castillo will personally bring it to the Blue Book Committee.

Uniform rule and jewelry rule will be in effect this year. Hair ties and metal hair clips are okay to use. Watches are considered equipment and are therefore acceptable. Sunglasses may be worn, however, they must have a protective shell around the lenses for safety reasons.

CIF is seeking a D1 team to help with the chute area for CIF. The team will be paid. ML King will do it if they move to D1, if not CIF will need a team. Contact Hal Harkness if interested.
