The hottest thing on two wheels on the male side in California this Fall has been Troy Swier (Mar Vista, Imperial Beach), and he is named this week's "DyeStatCal Male Athlete of the Week." His short 2002 season has been marked by stunning efforts in his San Diego area, with, we are assured, some continued great running down the road this season. His Baron Invitational Course Record run this past weekend was highlighted by a 4:30 first mile. In talking to Troy's Coach, Ben Holt, Ben insists,"These meets this time of year are just a part of our training. I was a bit surprised at the first mile time at the Baron Meet, as I have stood at that point on the court for a long time, and no one has ever come by any faster than 4:42 before!" Good news to hear with a long season ahead that hopefully will end with a run up and down the hills of Balboa Park in December in the Foot Locker National Finals, scheduled in San Diego this year. Coach Holt continues, "We do have a season long plan and our races this time of year are part of our workout plans, and often treated as such." Geez, we wonder what will happen when he turns Troy loose!!! Troy had a good track season, with 4:18.31 (1600) and 9:22.79 (3200 bests), and was eighth in last year's State Meet Division II. As is often the case with a good runner, they are kept on their toes by another star in the area in their division, with championships needing to go through 9:15.51 3200m star Babey Wagnew (Helix, La Mesa), third in last year's State CC Meet as just a soph! When the duo hooked up at the Wolf Pack Invite a week previous to Baron, they destroyed the old 10:53 CR, with Troy eventually winning 10:15 - 10:22. Running does happen in this family, with brother Blake a very successful local career, and now at Cal Poly/SLO, running for that fine Collegiate group as a junior this year. Races coming up - Coach Holt adds, "We will be at the Mt. Carmel Invitational this coming weekend, with races at Dana Hills and eventually Mt. SAC on the schedule." Oh boy, as there will be some folks showing up to these affairs who really come to run. Showing superbly at the local level, we look forward in a very anticipated manner to those races in the next few weeks where there is a great deal of "cross-sectional" competition, with some of the best in the State traveling in.

Congrats - Best of Luck
