Dyestatcal California
Girls Coach of the Week 9/9-9/13/02
Over the last few years San Pasqual of Escondido in the San Diego Section
has had a Girls’ Cross-Country program emerge from local to state
and national level successes with a very impressive “group charge”
that shows special care of some special athletes. The North San Diego
County school has a great distance tradition established by Will Wester
a few years back, and that has been picked up recently with the accomplishments
of the Girls’ squad, State Division II Champs in a crushing victory
last November in Fresno, with recognition this year that started off with
them being listed as the top prep team in the Western U.S. and #3 ranking
in the entire nation! Coach Pat King, with a variety of experiences in
his own running along the way, is the coach/architect of this quickly
established dynasty, and he is honored as this week’s “Dyestatcal
Coach of the Week” for our State. He indicates influence by a number
of very, very good coaches that he credits below. Below he takes the time
to talk a bit about his career, situation with this year’s team
at San Pasqual, and offers some more good advice to young coaches who
may just be starting. “I ran at Valhalla H.S. and graduated in 1978. I ran 4:18 for 1 mile and 15:45 for 3 miles. I went on to run at Grossmont College, first for Bob Larsen and then Jim Peabody who had been my H.S. coach. I transfered to SDSU and ran under Dixon Farmer. Best of 3:55 1500, and 32:19 10K in XC. Started coaching at Valhalla as Distance Coach under Donnie Roberson in 1984. Worked with Mark Dani for three years. He was 8:44 for 3200 and 3rd at Kinney in 1985. Went to Grossmont College spent seven years under Mike Muirhead as an assistant. When they dropped the program in 1992 I started looking for as H.S. position. After two years of subbing in the Poway District and working as an assistant at Rancho Bernardo with Don Jones the San Pasqual job opened and I was hired by Steve Spraker. I've taught and coached since 1996 at SP. Our goal is to repeat as State Champions, we know it will not be easy. Last year we snuck up on everyone, that wont happen this year. The key is for us is to stay healthy. We have two new girls at the 6 and 7 and our #4 from the State Meet is injured. We have a lot of work to do. I have been fortunate to have worked with, or ran for some outstanding coaches. Obviously coaches such as Larsen, Peabody, Muirhead, Farmer and Jones were big influences. I've always observed and listened, you can learn a lot. Like many HS coaches I modify workouts and try to blend workouts to meet the needs of my team. My advise for new coaches, Be patient, do not be afraid to change or modify workouts. Make it fun and realize that racing is not easy. Do not “over coach” the big meet, and take the pressure off the athletes.” Thanks Pat King
