Berlin ISTAF Meet 9/6/02 Olympic Level Meet - Marion Jones takes 100 - splits Golden League Jackpot!!!

Jones wins share of Golden League Jackpot

With her win Friday in the women’s 100 meters at the ISTAF 2002 in Berlin,
five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones has won a share of the 2002 IAAF
Golden League Jackpot.

This marks the third time in her career that Jones has won a share of the
Jackpot, having also earned a portion of the Jackpot in 1998 and 2001. Jones
shares this year’s prize with Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj (men’s 1,500m),
the Dominican Republic’s Felix Sanchez (men’s 400m hurdles) and Mexico’s Ana
Guevara (women’s 400m), all of whom won their respective events Friday at
the final event of this year’s Golden League. The four winners will split
the jackpot of 50kg of gold (roughly $500,000) for winning their events at
all seven of this year’s Golden League meets.

Jones dominated the women’s 100 meters as she has all year by winning today
in 11.01 seconds. Jamaica’s Tayna Lawrence was the runner-up in 11.12. Other
Americans in the race included Torri Edwards (4th-11.20) and Kelli White
(8th-11.66).

Other standout U.S. women’s performances were turned in by Suzy Favor
Hamilton, who placed second in the 1,500 meters in 3:59.40. With her
performance in Berlin, Favor Hamilton becomes the second U.S. woman in
history to break the 1,500m four-minute barrier twice in one season. Mary
Decker Slaney accomplished the feat twice, in 1983 and ’85. Favor Hamilton
ran 3:59.10 in placing second last month in Zurich.

In the 100m hurdles, Gail Devers was the runner-up in 12.65 seconds followed
by fellow Americans Anjanette Kirkland (3rd-12.75), Jenny Adams (4th-12.92)
and Melissa Morrison (7th-13.00). Jamaica’s Bridgette Foster won the race in
12.62.

Ana Guevara won her share of the Golden League Jackpot by winning the women’
s 400 meters in 49.91. She was followed by Americans Jearl Miles-Clark
(3rd-51.06) and Michelle Collins (4th-51.49).

In men’s action in Berlin Coby Miller was the runner-up in the 100 meters in
10.07. Other Americans included Bernard Williams (4th-10.18), Darvis Patton
(5th-10.19) and Maurice Greene (6th-10.20). Joey Woody was third in the men’
s 400m hurdles in 48.77. Other U.S. finishers were Eric Thomas (4th-48.93)
and James Carter (6th-49.65).

Jeff Hartwig and Tim Mack were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men’s
pole vault. Both cleared 5.60m/18-4.50.
